In the early 1960s, a friend of mine married an exchange student

from Afghanistan she'd met a few months before in college, and they traveled to Afghanistan - for a visit, he'd said, so she could meet his mother and other family members.

The "visit" ended up encompassing years, during which time she had 3 children and was pretty much a prisoner, enduring both physical and emotional abuse by her husband and his family. She was even used as a gun runner from Afghanistan to Pakistan.

Since she was blond and fair-skinned, whenever she was allowed out of the house on her own to go to the marketplace, she had to wear a burqa so as to not to invite rape because of her unique attractiveness.

One day when she and her little children were at the marketplace, she was secretively approached by a woman who offered to help her escape with the assistance of an underground railroad.

She and the children walked for miles through the desert to meet up with the first contact and were driven by car many miles to the next one. So it went, contact after contact, until finally she and the children arrived - bedraggled, but safe and sound - at the U.S. embassy in Kabul. Their next stop was America.

She divorced her husband and was awarded full custody of the children, who became naturalized American citizens. She later married a nice man who, when he was a chubby red-headed, freckled kid, lived a few houses down the street from me as a kid in western Nebraska and had a bossy but adorable chihuahua named Squeaker.

The other day she remarked that with Republicans wanting to control every aspect of women's lives, she sometimes feels as if she'd never escaped Afghanistan.

Meanwhile there are countless true stories of LEGAL immigrants who came from communist countries and are realizing that the left and Democrat party are very comparable to their former hell-scapes.

4. When did they visit Afghanistan?

Since pre-1979 Afghanistan was noteworthy for the freedoms women had including suffrage and to dress as they pleased.

Concur. Short of advanced dementia I don't think a woman with those experiences would or could equate life in the US with that sort of life in Afghanistan. As :bouncy: s go, that one is stupidly ridiculous.

It needs some dancing transvestites and a dodge ram pickup with big tires and a loud exhaust with a stereo blasting Christian music..and the driver was wearing a red maga hat  :-)

Pitiful. I remember the bouncys they used to tell involving holocaust survivors who said Bush reminded them of Hitler. The primitives have really dropped off in their lies.

OTOH, I can take you to several Cubans and/or their children who escaped Castro who will tell you how much the Democrats remind them of communism.

No bricks or Taliban leaping out of bushes.  Pathetic.

Ok, this thread is turning quite interesting.  We have another denizen swimming against the cesspool current.

13. Oh please..

When you find a female foreign national being kept "prisoner" here by some supposed "Christian taliban" let us know. Until then that assertion is absurd.

24. I've read about them, and no, it's still not the same.

Child molesters and kidnappers are everywhere, but we DO have laws against those things in addition to a culture that is, on the whole, much more receptive to the concept of women's rights.

Some "I heard another story like that"

5. The same thing happened to a lady I worked with. Married an Iranian after the fall

Married him after knowing him for less than a month.
A friend said she got a letter 6 years later. Said she couldn’t leave the country.
We never saw her again.

Some reminders that the DUmp has little to no concept of US laws and the legal system.

7. I wonder why the kids had to be naturalised.

If their mom was an American citizen, wouldn't they automatically be citizens, too?

On second thought, I wonder if that was done to officially erase any Afghani citizenship they might have also had, and so protect them from their father having any access to them and maybe trying to get them back? If so, sounds like a wise move.

I don't know exactly how these things wor,k, so I might have it all wrong.

And of course, some ORANGE MAN BAD!!!11!!!!1

34. People are plenty shitty to foreigners here

Remember Trump keeping kids in cages? The red states are screwing people over abortion choice and LGBT folks' right to exist. There are problems of human trafficking and child brides in some conservative Christian communities here in the US.

We compare it to Taliban because it is a reminder of how bad things can get if we didn't have checks and balances on religious extremists.

I don't know whether DU-member japple is ignorant or intentionally trying to deceive, but the "Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints", https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fundamentalist_Church_of_Jesus_Christ_of_Latter-Day_Saints , would not be viewed as Christians by the observant Catholics and Evangelicals so many DU-folk HATE. Nor, for that matter, would folks of the LDS or RLDS churches regard FLDS folks as true Mormons. FLDS folks are mostly in the semi-remote Utah-Arizona  border towns where they started around a century ago. Here's a clue for any DU-onlurkers who chance to see this post: To Himalayanize an anthill one must first have an anthill. DU-member japple has no anthill.

S/h/it's a DUm'Rat, so the default is that they are attempting a deception intentionally.

This observation has never steered me wrong:

Many DU-folk display jaw-dropping ignorance about a wide variety of matters, so perhaps "both" - ignorance and lies - should be the default assumption if specifics are lacking.

Not to mention that Jeffs was relentlessly pursued and given a ten to life sentence. The Taliban would've promoted him.
