It. Is. The. ****ing. Guns. Period.
Why do gunners rights have precedence over our children's rights to attend school? Employees' rights to attend a work meeting? Any of us having the right to go grocery shopping?
I have no idea how we are going to get from where we are to where we need to go. At some point, I assume that a miracle will have to occur to redefine the second amendment. I wonder if it is a formula - X deaths over Y days = sufficient impetus to actually do something? Will it be the murders of famous persons A, B or C?
What will do us in? Out of control temperature rise and the effects of climate change? Or out of control gun ownership making each day a daily bloodbath?
Or will we get as desensitized to that as much of the country is desensitized to tfg's lies and crimes? Does it all just get normalized?
****. Thoughts. And. Prayers too.

1. Because of male insecurity.....
Guns have more rights than women.

3. Yes. Why don't school children have any rights?
What about life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness?
RockRaven (12,574 posts)
5. Same reason this country puts the rights of Xians over others -- a handful of dirt bag SC justices
say so.
The only way forward is to make them irrelevant by reforming the judiciary (many different ways to do that, but it needs literal re-forming i.e. a significant structural change). Seems impossible, and it certainly won't happen tomorrow. But it is the only way.
bucolic_frolic (36,357 posts)
6. Life, liberty, & pursuit of happiness is diminished by quest for money, power, and property rights
1A and 2A are doing well. But SCOTUS never permanently sorted out the rest of the rights, in order. Maybe it's unrealistic. But life has primacy. Right now, guns are trumping the right to live. Fear is damaging 1A. Americans will all be cowering in their computer cottages afraid to go out in public. This is not life. This is home confinement for political reasons.

12. WarGamer, the Constitution calls for a well maintained militia. We have a military, police, etc. The
Constitution does not call for individuals acting alone. Also, if people have the right to bear arms, then tax the hell out of
ammunition. There is nothing in the Constitution about ammunition. That way the gun humpers can have all the guns they want-they just won't be able to shoot them.

19. That's a really gray area.
I don't ro really get into it because it's a HUGE topic...
But IMO...
Well regulated means "functioning properly" as you indicated. It does NOT mean regulated in the common parlance of today.
An 18th Century usage might read "After 2 new wooden wheels, the wagon is now well regulated for another growing season at the farm"
Militia? In that era, the militia meant all men.
There are other texts that back this up.
Federalist 46. Madison said "Besides the advantage of being armed, which the Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation..."
Also in 46, Madison speaks vaguely about an armed public, organized into militias by the States can defeat a Federal Gov't gone rogue.
IMHO... the key will be to amend the Constitution... OR for a future Court to change the interpretation.

23. "Militia meant all men." I'd like to see a citation on that.

10 U.S. Code § 246 - Militia: composition and classes
(a)The militia of the United States consists of all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the National Guard.

26. Yeah, I've had gun-"enthusiasts" tout that before. So those over 45 need
to turn in their guns. That would get rid of 70% of weapons, maybe more.
How old are you?
:thatsright:
WarGamer (8,396 posts)
28. Over 45... this isn't an "enthusiast" thing, it's a Constitution thing.
To change the gun problem... gotta start at the Constitution or at least the interpretation.
I'm 100% confident that the founding fathers DID want a gun in every home. There are way too many places they wrote about the ability to mobilize the populace into a huge standing army.
Having said that...
I'm also 100% sure that the founding fathers would be AGHAST at what the gun culture has become.
I think it's 100% legal to re-classify all assault rifles as to require an NFA Tax Stamp to own one and the hoops that requires jumping through.
Ever seen an NFA stamped suppressor or SBR used in a crime? It's rare.

30. That's a really gray area.
I think Federalist Paper #29 - "Concerning the Militia" would disagree. It actually uses the term Well Regulated Militia, and talks about the need to assemble them once or twice a year, as well as having officers etc
This idea of the Second Amendment acting as an individual right is new, and it was NOT how it was traditionally interpreted, up until the 1960s when gun rights advocates made a concerted effort to change almost 2 centuries of understanding. And then District of Columbia v Heller was decided in 2008 by a 5-4 margin. John Paul Stevens's dissent was firm and he would say Heller was “unquestionably the most clearly incorrect decision . . . announced during my tenure on the bench,”.
It is really amazing to me how this toss-up decision, which hasn't even been around as long as the show Grey's Anatomy has somehow become an unquestionable right.

17. BUT HOW DO WE AS A COUNTRY GET RID OF ALL THE GUNS THAT ARE OUT THERE NOW???
Frasier Balzov (1,781 posts)
27. First things first.
Stop the flow of new units into American society.
That goal seems impossible enough.

49. Why wait 10 years to do anything because there will be another 100 M guns
on the street, and one can ask the same question again?
Might as well start now, even if there are 400 million guns in the USA.
This issue is not going to be solved overnight. It might take 50 or 100 years, but it’ll be worth it.

52. And my two friends.
Who I’ll NEVER see again.
I’ll never laugh or joke with them again, or gossip or commiserate with them again. Or enjoy late night snacks with them again. Or loooooooonnnng phone calls with them again. Or talk politics with them or gripe with them or eat too much with them or stay up too late with them again.
They’re just GONE. Because there was a gun within east reach when an argument got out of hand. Gone. Bye-bye. Sayonara. Farewell Forever.
If I could, I would take ALL the guns and either bury them in concrete or feed them into a metal crushing machine. So THEY, TOO, would be GONE. BYE-BYE. SAYONARA. FAREWELL FOREVER.

Isn't it amazing, when the shooter is a deranged liberal and/or tranny, the problem is the guns.
When the shooter is white and somewhat conservative, the problem isn't guns but the Trump loving, white supremacist, nazi, KKK member redneck that is to blame.
They have their cake and eat it too..

The real problem is a human-self-control problem.
And, seriously! After decades of teaching children that they are nothing more than the highest animals evolved yet in a universe that came into being by cosmic accident, why is anyone surprised that they behave like animals - bullying and beating up fellow children and killing fellow adults? This shooter, like the female that slaughtered the 9YOs at the Christian school, decided to act like the gods they had been taught they are and did what they wanted to do.

More gun laws are not the answer.
Just say that to a leftist and watch their head explode. Press them hard enough and the bottom line is they want to confiscate all guns.

I was going to put up a link to the 2ndVote's AR-15 live stream, but it seems to have vanished. :(
The gun went over 3 years without ending a single life, human or animal, or even loading itself, all on live 24/7 video. So, please DUmp, 'splain that one when you whine "it's the guns!!111!!!!1!!!!"

In my time here on Earth I have never encountered a single incident where a gun killed or wounded someone. Weird huh?

I grew up in a rural county where many town residents and most (nearly all?) farmers were hunters. The majority of homes in the area had multiple guns, probably mostly rifles and shotguns (though some had handguns as well, my Dad being one who did). Despite all those guns, we had few murders (by whatever means) and zero mass shootings.

If it was The. ****ing. Guns. Period...
Instead of there being some 30ish thousand gun deaths annually, with 2/3 being suicides, there would be tens of millions.
As it stands, 10k give or take gun homicides in a nation of 350+ million guns in 120+ million hands, tends to demonstrate that it isn't the guns at all.
Rational, logical people understand this. Gun hating DUmmies, not so much.

Which translates to the truth that there a LOT of "lazy" guns out there that don't kill people.

When the shooter is trans, they're described as "fighting for their existence", and they have a "Day of Vengeance"... for... some reason?

If Americans are cowering from these issues, it's not because of the 1st or 2nd Amendments; it's because mass media leads them to believe if they so much as step outside, they'll be shot, and that conspiracy theorists are some lethal threat wit their "disinformation".
