I just found out my kid's kindergarten class is teaching Russian 40 mins per day.
Yes Russian!! WTF?!?! Why Russian?? I am shocked, pissed, angry, confused..
Apparently the county school system (PG County MD) decides on one language to teach per year. Why on earth they would choose Russian when there are dozens of other languages that I would think most parents would consider more appropriate than Russian.
I am considering asking his teacher if he can opt out and just play.
Who decided this?? I simply dont get it.
This dim bulb thinks it would be sooooo much better for his kid to "just play" than to learn something.
This whole thread is a real hoot-fest! Some of the DUmmies are actually smart enough to understand WHY learning another language is good, and the rest think it's a waste of time to teach young children things they won't use for the rest of their lives, or are horrified by the fact that the school system is turning kindergarteners into little Putinistas.
It has to be seen to be believed.
(And, BTW, what kind of good Dem chooses the nickname of a REPUBLICAN president for his DU name????)

I didn't even realize it until random posters on the Internet pointed out there is absolutely no reason you would want to learn the 8th most widely spoken language on Earth. There's no chance you would ever use it.
In fact I realized that it even creeped into my house. I have gone into the refrigerator and relabled my bottle of Russian dressing as Freedom dressing.

As for myself, I made sure that the vodka bottle is behind the tequila bottle on the bar. I mean, it was like that before because the vodka bottle is taller, so it just makes sense to arrange them that way, but that's not the point! The point is that the vodka bottle is relatively hidden. Hiddenish. Well, not terribly hidden, but kind of. I was going to paint over the label in red, white and blue, but then I realized that's the same colors as the Russian flag, and it wouldn't be very helpful in making it seem more patriotic. So I didn't do that. Instead I'm just going to sing God Bless America every time I make a screwdriver.

They are probably spending some of that 40 minutes singing songs, learning Russian nursery rhymes, maybe doing an art project... It seems like a lot of time, but it probably goes pretty fast.

BTW, my grandparents and their older daughter were Volga Germans (the rest of their children being born in the US). I've been told that my grandfather spoke two dialects of German, Russian, and English. My aunt, who was a preschooler when she came to the US, has some hassle in the 1950s over whether she really was allowed to vote (she was naturalized when her parents were, and had been voting, unquestioned and in the same town, for about 3 decades).
A further useless fact, while the US was fighting the War of 1812, Russian settlers were in California at what is now called Fort Ross. The colony was used for the fur trade and to grow food for Russia's Alaska colonies. There are descendants of those Russians still in California, and some were still speaking Russian into the 20th Century.

Looks like the district offers a pretty extensive foreign language program that does start in elementary school (don't see if they count kindergarten as elementary). But only one elementary school offers Russian. Sounds like a pretty easy solution if honest.abe so dreads their child learning the language of Marx and Lenin.
We know they can't go complain at the school board, only white supremacist ultra maga nationalists do that....

Seems to me, connections not just to Russia but to the worst, most corrupt regime to control the Russian territory were just fine with the leftist scum - until they launched their faux effort to frame The Donald with the exact kinds of connections to the failed state formerly known as the Soviet Union that their side of the aisle have been known for for decades. By such DUmmy logic, German should have not have ever been taught in the United States after WWI and WWII, nor should Japanese be taught because of Pearl Harbor.
Let's not even get into the Spanish-American War nor the American Revolution. We'd be language-less.

Of corse not. This is about a kindergarten class. My kid is 5 years old. He’s having trouble with learning the alphabet and counting. Those are the things I wish they were focusing on. Furthermore if it was a different language like Spanish or French or even Mandarin I think we would be ok with it. At least something likely to help him in the future.
The kid is having trouble with the alphabet and counting. So, what does the DUmbass do with his kid? Why is he leaving it up to the teacher? Couldn't he do some activities related to those skills AT HOME? Why should bright, motivated kids be HELD BACK by some kid whose parents apparently think they don't have any responsibility for helping their child learn the most basic skills???

252. It's a little weird considering the complete and thorough GOP takeover
by Russia, including the NRA. Now consider that the MAGA crowd has also been very successful in taking over school boards. And they loves them some Russia/Putin, still. This may have been a benign and well-meaning decision by a decent administrator, but it may also be some school-board MAGAt's idea to familiarize children with the Russian language and culture (which they believe to be superior: ultra-christian/anti-gay). It all depends on who is making this decision. If I were a parent, I wouldn't pull my kids out of the class, but I would lament not having a choice for a more relevant language being introduced. I would also not be happy if this were part of a political agenda. Very weird timing.
Many, many years ago, I took Russian History as a h.s. senior. It was so interesting, and I looked into taking more in college. Maybe it was just because the teacher was very good, or maybe it was because it's a rich and beautiful culture, with a fascinating history.
I'm pretty sure it wasn't because I had a thing for Leonid Breshnev.

1. Unless the munchkin has plans to work in Quebec or France - a 5YO knows what Quebec and France are? - or work for the State Department, learning French is not likely to "help him in the future".
2. a. If the munchkin is having trouble learning 26 Roman letters, trying to have him learn the hundreds of commonly used Chinese characters, even the simplified character set used in the mainland, would be insane. And, yes, learning Chinese characters is important in learning the language, so Pinyin would not be a suitable substitute. Further, being an English speaker, munchkin would probably have considerable difficulty hearing and emulating the tones of spoken Chinese. I doubt that Star Moron honest.abe knows anyone who speaks Mandarin; my daughter is fluent and has the equivalent of a BA from a Chinese university in Chinese Language and Culture.
2. b. Star Moron honest.abe hates the Russian language, because Ukraine, but is totally OK with Mandarin despite China being country of origin of Covid? If it weren't for double standards, DUpipo would have no standards at all.

I'd imagine you'd be hard- pressed to find a kindergarten class that is taught a foreign language, let alone an incredibly complicated language like Russian, LET ALONE be taught it 40 minutes of every day. Most kindergarten classes are only just starting to learn the letters of the English alphabet.

1. You'd have a hard time finding a conservative American who loves Russia/ Putin. Just because we don't buy into all your psychotic conspiracy theories about him doesn't mean we love the guy or the country.
2. Last time I checked, the typical American conservative is more interested in pushing traditional American culture than Russian culture.
3. "ultra- Christian"? Um, the DUmmies ARE aware that, back when Russia was still the Soviet Union, it launched horrifically bloody campaigns of genocide against Christians, aren't they?
