DETROIT -- Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has accepted a plea deal in his perjury case that will end his tenure as the city's mayor and send him to jail.

WATCH LIVE:Kilpatrick Court Hearing

Wayne County Circuit Court Judge David Groner resided over the court case where Kilpatrick said he agreed to plead guilty to two felony counts of obstruction of justice by committing perjury.

Part of the plea agreement includes immediate resignation within 14 days; pay restitution of $1 million; spend 4 months in jail; and cannot run for public office for 5 years.

He will also have to hand over his law license and turn over his state pension to the city of Detroit.

Judge Groner read aloud all of the charges that were facing Kilpatrick and told him all of two would be dismissed.

He also asked Kilpatrick several questions regarding his guilty plea and whether he was doing it on his own willingness and whether or not he was satisfied with what was taking place.

Kilpatrick answered each question and did state that he knew exactly what was taking place and was agreeing to plead guilty.

"I lied under oath in the case of Gary Brown in a civil deposition regarding information of claims I mislead and impeded justice. I also lied under oath at a civil depostion on Oct. 11, 2004 in the Harold Nelthrope lawsuit," Kilpatrick told the judge.

Kilpatrick, 38, and in his second four-year term as mayor, was charged with 10 felonies in two cases.

In the first case, he and Christine Beatty were charged with perjury, conspiracy, misconduct and obstruction of justice. They are accused of lying during the 2007 whistle-blowers' trial about having an extramarital affair and their roles in the firing of a deputy police chief.

Text messages from Beatty's city-issued pager contradicted their testimony.

Kilpatrick will be sentenced Oct. 28 at 2 p.m.

In the second case, Kilpatrick is charged with two counts of assault after he allegedly shoved a Wayne County detective into an investigator while they were trying to serve his friend a subpoena.

The Michigan Attorney General's plea deal offered to Kilpatrick in the assault charges expired Wednesday.

Although, Doug Baker from the Attorney General's office has reached a deal with Kilpatrick regarding this case as well on Thursday.

Baker said Kilpatrick will plead no contest on the first count of assault and the second count will be dismissed at time of sentencing.

Baker said part of that deal would be immediate resignation from his job as the mayor of Detroit and will spend jail time concurrent with the previous plea deal.

Meanwhile, Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm concluded the first day of a hearing that could oust Kilpatrick from office.

The hearing will resume Thursday, one hour after the conclusion of the expected plea deal hearing, said a Granholm spokeswoman.

If Kilpatrick is forced from office, City Council President Ken Cockrel Jr. would succeed him until a special election is held.

Surprising no one, the fact that he is a democrat is missing from this, and the Detroit Free Press's stories.

Most of the papers readers are Detroit (or area) residents.  If you didn't know he was a democrat, then you're to dumb to care anyways.
