ST. PAUL -- Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the Republican vice-presidential nominee who revealed Monday that her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant, earlier this year used her line-item veto to slash funding for a state program benefiting teen mothers in need of a place to live.
After the legislature passed a spending bill in April, Palin went through the measure reducing and eliminating funds for programs she opposed. Inking her initials on the legislation -- "SP" -- Palin reduced funding for Covenant House Alaska by more than 20 percent, cutting funds from $5 million to $3.9 million. Covenant House is a mix of programs and shelters for troubled youths, including Passage House, which is a transitional home for teenage mothers.
According to Passage House's web site, its purpose is to provide "young mothers a place to live with their babies for up to eighteen months while they gain the necessary skills and resources to change their lives" and help teen moms "become productive, successful, independent adults who create and provide a stable environment for themselves and their families."

I find this interesting, given Covenant House's financials...

I can't see where they received 5 million last year, or how Sarah Palin could possibly have CUT their budget. From all I see, the 3.9 million looks like a lot more than they received in 2007. Another horrible repuke "budget cut." The amount given only doubled+. :thatsright:
On another note... (http://covenanthouseak.org/pdfs/Financials/FY07%20Annual%20Report.pdf)it looks like ConocoPhillips of Alaska has been a major donor, somewhere over $50,000 last year. I bet they'll get a nice pat on the back from the DUmp, right? ::)

Was is really a "cut in funding" or was it a reduction in spending growth? The liberals play that card just to have something to stick to those evil GOP'ers.

The government did nothing ot get those girls pregnant, and it is not the responsibility of society to address their needs.
They decided they were adults when they started having sex. They need to become productive and be parents without society's help. Anytime something os subsidized you get more of that thing.

exactly....the families can help them, or they can figure it out, but it is NOT the gov'ts job to bail them out!
