Portland City Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty has been sued by Bank of America over unpaid debt incurred on two of her credit cards.

On Tuesday, news broke that Bank of America had filed a lawsuit against Portland City Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty. According to KATU2, Hardesty is on the hook for $16,000 for allegedly failing to pay off her credit cards, despite making over $100,000 per year.

"When I ran for City Council in 2018, like many working people I was reliant on a credit card and built up debt," Hardesty told KATU2.  "I live alone, without help, and put all of myself into my work at the City. Sometimes that means I neglect to take care of personal matters."

Bank of America wants their money paid back.

Quote
Jo Ann A. Hardesty (born October 15, 1957) is an American Democratic politician in the U.S. state of Oregon who is currently a Portland City Commissioner, having taken office on the Portland City Council in January 2019. She previously served in the Oregon House of Representatives from 1995 until 2001. Hardesty is the first African American woman to serve on Portland's city council[2][3] and is an advocate of defund the police. In November 2020, a controversy over Hardesty's 911 over a Lyft driver who refused to roll a window up[4] drew national attention.[5]
...
In 2020, Hardesty voted to cut $18 million in funding from the Portland Police Bureau budget. The vote failed 3-2.[15][16]

Hardesty called 911 during a dispute with a Lyft driver. The driver had refused to roll up a window, citing Lyft's pandemic air circulation recommendations. Hardesty was picked up from a casino, and was dropped off at a filling station along I-5 when she called 911 to report an emergency.[17]

Not true at all.  Only the stupid and the extremely desperate "live on credit cards."

Looks like she has a bit of a gambling problem too.

$16K in debt.

I wonder how many cell phones she has. And how many big screen TVs. I'll bet her "work at the City" doesn't prevent her from having those things.

Scumbag.

You call it neglecting personal matters but normal people call it being a deadbeat.

I feel like this is symbolic of democrats in general.
Similar to the congressional post office scandal back in the '90s that exposed several democrat lawmakers for embezzling money

Portland's Cop-Hating City Commissioner, Jo Ann Hardesty, In Trouble With Creditors Again

Quote
Bank of America filed suit against Hardesty in November over two credit card debts totaling $16.051.54. She was served with legal notice of the filing on Dec. 1 and has 30 days from that date to respond in writing, or a default judgment will be entered against her. Hardesty has not yet responded to the court filing but issued a public statement acknowledging the debts:
...
Notably, Hardesty earns a salary as a city councilor north of $127,000 while living in a small apartment in East Portland. Hardesty has made no comment so far as to why she hasn’t paid back the debts.

Never mind her cushy public salary, with which the 64-year-old Hardesty could easily have paid off these debts with a minimum of responsible budgeting. Her written statement that she ran into debt while campaigning for office doesn’t hold water. An examination of her campaign contributions from 2017 through 2020, maintained at the Oregon Secretary of State’s website, shows she raised over half a million dollars for her campaign—$514,398.30, to be exact.
...
Hardesty’s statement that “as a working person” she ran into credit card debt allows for one of two conclusions: either she illegally commingled personal credit cards with her campaign expenditures or she didn’t have a job while campaigning, which belies her claim as a “working person.”

When one probes Hardesty’s history, a clear pattern of mismanagement emerges. There is an endless list of unpaid parking tickets, previous lawsuits; unpaid taxes, allegations of substance abuse and a possible gambling problem, accusations of impropriety in her time as head of the local chapter of the NAACP, and, of course, the allegation of involvement in a hit and run accident. While the Portland Police Bureau claimed less than 24 hours after the accident that they didn’t consider Hardesty a suspect, questions linger.

All along, her response is to accuse those talking about her of racism against the city’s only female of color on the city council and to file lawsuits.

My emphasis.
