Bob Dole, Longtime Senator, Republican Leader, Dies at 98
The Kansas native who was grievously wounded in battle during World War II fought his way back to health and eventually served 36 years in Congress
Bob Dole, the longtime lawmaker who overcame life-threatening injuries during World War II to become a shepherd of the Republican Party, died in his sleep at the age of 98.
Dole's death was confirmed by the Elizabeth Dole Foundation and his family in separate statements Sunday.
In February, Dole revealed that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and said he was starting treatment.
A former Senate majority leader and the 1996 Republican nominee for president, the native of Russell, Kansas, championed everything from reforming the federal food stamp program to bringing awareness to disabilities.
He was one of the oldest first-time presidential nominees at age 73, but even after retiring from politics after losing the race to President Bill Clinton, Dole didn't shy away from the limelight. He took on a new career starring in television commercials for Viagra, Visa and other brands. He also kept his commitment to fellow war veterans, spending Saturdays well into his 90s greeting veterans who flew to Washington, D.C., courtesy of the Honor Flight Network, a nonprofit that arranges such flights for veterans.

RIP, Mr. Dole. :usflag:

I held my nose when voting for him for POTUS, but that's the worst I'll say. Sympathy and prayers for his family (and a pox on any DUers displaying their usual clASS.

The 1976 version of Bob Dole was everything one could ask for, but as time went on, like Barry Goldwater, he got soft.

To some degree he suffered from comparison to Reagan. It was also well into the time when many establishment Rs were consigning Christians, especially the Pro-Life Christians, to the rumble seat of the R Party bus - vote R but expect zero and STHU. OTOH, compared to Bill & Hill ...

Thanks Ralph for posting this.
Robert Dole was a Conservative Republican par none, (at the time) with friends on both sides of the aisle.
May he rest in peace!

Oh Mercy, on a lighter note ...
Should have written : "bar" none above, not "par" none! (blush)
Blame Mr. ABC, his Sunday brunches & bloody Marys! :rotf:
Coffee, coming up!!!

Same here, as I caucused for Steve Forbes in 1996. Quite similar to my POTUS votes for McCain and Romney, very much held my nose. Had Perot not run for President again '96, Dole stood a decent chance to beat Slick Willie.
As for the crass DUmmies, haven't even looked over there and don't care. I already know they'll be classy as always. :whatever: :whatever: :whatever:

Bob was one of the gracious ones back when being gracious as a politician was pretty much required. Today, not so much.
Wounded in WWII, I believe he pretty much lost the use of his right arm following receiving German machine gun fire in his right arm and upper back. Two Purple Hearts and Bronze Star with "V" device for valor.
RIP, Senator Dole. Mission complete. :taps:

I thank him for his Service.
Yeah, after he secured the Nomination, his Campaign turned soft.
That didn't stop me from supporting his wife's potential Candidacy after slowly drifting-away from supporting Alan Keyes. I wonder if my 90's-self would beat my current-self in a debate.

A brief interesting read about Dole's Army service, https://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2021/12/bob-dole-at-war.php .

Not gonna lie, really thought he went quietly a few years ago, and was very curious when he started popping up in news feeds this weekend.
His political career was from before I got very attentive to politics, but I do remember his presidential campaign making me wonder if the Republican party really wanted to win elections or not. Being from Kansas, I did pick up a bit about his military service and his permanent injury to his arm.
RIP
