Extra day off kitchen challenge.
   
I have never made actual pastry before so I got it into my head to attempt a lemon cream cheese danish braid, or individual danish (I haven't completely decided yet.)

I'm using this recipe:

and I've just made my first turn. So far so good! No problems yet and this is one time the stand mixer has come in very handy.

franksolich is curious.  What is a "stand mixer"?  franksolich is familiar only with Hamilton Beach mixing appliances, the Electrolux, the sans peer, the ne plus ultra, of electric egg-beaters.

I'm glad your stand mixer is there to help. It sure has muscle and can handle volume.

Oh, okay.  A "stand mixer" must be a smaller relative of a concrete mixer.

2. Lemon is my favorite flavor in just about anything these days. I didn't like it as a kid clear through young adulthood, now I can't seem to get enough of it for some reason.

I've baked my cookies and have cornbread in the oven now for dinner later (beans out in the solar oven) so I can really cool down the kitchen again when it's time to make the danish. I don't have a ravioli cutter wheel so a pizza cutter will have to do. Just won't be fancy shmancy.

I'll be interested to see how it turns out. I've never attempted Danish pastry, although I am fearless and have made many difficult baked items. I might be goaded into it by your attempt.

So far none of it has been difficult at all, just time consuming. I would recommend having everything measured out and ready. I always do that for any recipe that I've never tried before that looks like it might be even the slightest bit complicated. I should do it all the time. LOL

We'll see how things turn out, but so far, so good!

The sparkling husband primitive, whose wife not only makes him use the bathroom in the basement, but probably also makes him do all the cooking too, while she lolls around in luxuriant laziness:

You have captured the essence of Danish Making!

The bonfire burns on and on and on, until the hippowife primitive puts up some photographs of the pastries, unbaked and baked.  It's worth getting out the boat and rowing over the Skins's island to see them, although really, it would be cheaper and easier and quicker if the hippowife primitive just got some at the grocery store.

I think a stand mixer is a regular mixer with a base, but I've never heard it called that.  As opposed to a hand-held mixer, I guess.

I had no idea.

It's an ordinary electric mixer, nothing special.

I thought the way franksolich's adopted grandmother was using the term, it was a special kind of mixer, maybe bigger than the Hamilton Beach electric mixer here.

Around here, one of those hand-held things is just called an "egg beater," not a "mixer."

A KitchenAid is a supreme stand mixer (I adore mine!) as opposed to the original Sunbeam model that our mothers' had, and I had before my KitchenAid.

A hand mixer is made by a variety of manufacturers ....Hamilton Beach, Black and Decker, etc....it's electric, lightweight, and usually only has 3-5 speeds that you can use for mashed potatoes, frosting, cake mixes, cookie dough, etc.

An egg beater has a handle that it's turning speed is based on how fast you can turn the crank....some use it for eggs (I prefer a whisk) or egg whites or whipping cream. Hard to balance if you are kind of short.

So endeth today's lesson on cooking equipment.... :yawn:

Kitchen Aide makes some excellent equipment.  Their immersion blenders are great for making soup. 

I bought a hand-held mixer and came to the conclusion that my power drill could do the same job.
