James Carville is exactly right.
Our message needs to meet people where they are and be within the bounds of reason.

1. He is exactly wrong
He hammers on "wokeness" as if he has the slightest idea what he's talking about. He doesn't. He just gets trotted out whenever he can bash the left.
Two moderate senators blocked a moderate President's agenda, and a moderate Guv candidate lost.
That has NOTHING to do with progressives or the left-leaning pols
:thatsright:

2. Thank you
I got tired of Carville and his ramblings years ago. I changed the channel when they trot him out to tell us how screwed up the Democrats are. It's his wing of the party that voters are fed up with.

7. Did McAuliffe run a pro-CRT campaign?
I missed that.
I did see that he insulted parents though

11. Could someone explain
How he insulted them? What he said seems to be taken way out of context.

25. wtf ?! Not this "please white men who'll never vote for you" shit again !!
1. the GQP doesn't even need REALITY to feed their base red meat (see CRT) ***THEY'LL LITERALLY MAKE SHIT UP!!!***
2. We should focus on getting OUR BASE OUT with reality based read meat, we don't
3. Don't let their false messaging take foot, flood that message zone with the truth... we don't.
Carville doesn't even understand what "woke" word means, that's how easy it is to influence these people

5. It also has nothing to do
with the progressive/ centrist feuds that people like nothing better than to fuel. Get over it. It wastes energy and only helps the right. The victimization complex is incredibly annoying. I don't care who it comes from.
Star Member uponit7771 (79,367 posts)
28. If our focus is on not stoking bigoted people yes, he's correct. If our focus is on stoking our ...
... base with reality centered read meat he's dead assed wrong.
What Carville is ***FOOLISHLY*** still saying is '... don't give GQP a hammer to hit you with ..." which ... WTF !?
THEY'LL LITERALLY MAKE UP SHIT to hit us with (see CRT) and to stoke their base with lies while dems stoke their base with ... process, uh ... GQP racist ... uh ... Climate change ?!?!
GQP WILL LIE NO MATTER WHAT WE SAY OR DO !!
Dems need to be better at stoking the base with read meat and "GQP is racist" has never been enough, we already know that.
Carville's analysis is biased at best, we SHOULD NOT focused on trying NOT to stoke stupid people ... that's an impossible job ... focus on bringing out new people and stoking our own base and the middle
McA ... DID NOT do that
:mental: :mental: :mental: :mental: :mental: :mental: out of 10 :mental:

38. +1
"Wokeness" has nothing to do with dem losses.

8. hard pass
his ideas on what constitutes the 'bounds of reason' are bullshit
he has been a washed-up has-been for ages
Boydog (559 posts)
12. So "defunding the police" does not play directly into the sweet spot of the right and enable them to couple that along with some made up bullshit like critical race theory to literally steal an election. We are dealing with the dumbest electorate in history. We cannot afford to give them another advantage. Who would have thought we would control the senate the house and the presidency and not be able to pass key legislation.

13. McAuliffe ran on defunding the police?
I guess I missed that, too
No wonder he lost. I've never heard of a candidate running on something like that.
Defunding the police, teaching CRT etc - those are generally grassroots or academic activist positions, not political platforms.

20. Carville has gotten ever-more obnoxious with time.
He was way over the top.
But not completely wrong. The absolutist and abolitionist language of some on the Left is joy to the ears of the likes of Tucker Carlson. Plus it's arguably stupid, pie-in-the-sky dreams.
The long, slow work of making a case for systemic change is completely overlooked in such calls. Instead the demands to defund the police and abolish ICE are heard by a majority who have no idea what has been happening or why someone might make that demand as just crazy talk.
Make the case. Do the documentaries. File the civil rights lawsuits. Get hearings held in Congress. Call for systemic reform. Do it for the years it takes to bring about systemic change. But don't start with the demand for the whole hog. You won't get it. Instead you will give RW media a battering ram to use to make their case that the Left is crazy and dangerous. You'll hurt the electoral chances of those who might hold those hearings, putting systemic change farther away.
I really don't like Carville. I wish I didn't think he has a point.

18. Nope. He's old and totally out of touch.
The same as Bill Marr. The world has passed them by and they can’t accept it.

22. The World Has Passed Carville By
McAuliffe ran a Carville-like campaign. He lost.
Back before the 2018 midterms, Carville was predicting that 'all the progressive crap the Dems are campaigning on is gonna cost them seats'. Even on election night, he was saying 'I told you so'. Until all the votes were counted. It wasn't just a Blue Wave, it was a Blue Tsunami.
Carville was dead wrong.
The progressive agenda is at 60%, 70%, 80%, and even 90%, with the American people. I mean, 90%. You can't get that many people to agree on what color the SKY is.

32. I think that someday we're going to look back at this last election and realize it was a nail in the Centrist coffin from the nineties. Yes, we need better messaging, but we need to continue moving forward making every election a confirmation that the Democratic party is committed to representing dark skinned Americans, and White Americans needs to recognize that that's where our future lies.

35. I am so ****ing tired of hearing about "the message"
Our message is fine. It always has been fine. We could promise and have a lock tight plan to deliver everyone in the country a home and education and half of this stupid ****ing country would be vehemently against it because they are that ****ing stupid.
That is the message that Carville and the other democratic democrat bashing personalities need to understand.

If Boydog actually believed DU was a place for thoughtful discussion rather than being a mole, maybe this thread will liberate him/her from that illusion, :rotf: .
I did post something about Carvile being a :o voice of sanity :o in those comments, but I promise Boydog is not me. :-)

Typical dem response; attack the person, not what they're saying.

It's all they got.
Pretty much. It's either shoot the messenger or they might have to admit their policies suck which won't happen.

This one is at least correct about the bolded part. They avoid the truth like the plague.

You could promise to put everybody in the country on the dole and half of them would be against it--because they're smart.
