France recalls ambassadors from U.S. and Australia following announcement of submarine deal

France announced Friday that it would immediately recall its ambassadors from the U.S. and Australia in retaliation over a new partnership between the U.S. and the U.K to deliver submarines to Australia.
According to the Associated Press, Australia scrapped a previous military deal with France that would have provided submarines to the country. Instead, the U.S. will provide nuclear-powered submarines to the country in an effort to halt Chinese military aggression along the South China Sea.
This is the first time France has recalled its ambassador from the U.S.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said in a written statement that the decision the French President Emanuel Macron made “is justified by the exceptional seriousness of the announcements” made by Australia and the U.S.
France is not happy.

At first glance, it seems like an extreme reaction. El Jefe might do a 180 on this Australia deal when he realizes these nuclear subs would be a threat to his BFF Red China.

This was done simultaneously with the formation of the AUKUS. The agreement covers key areas such as artificial intelligence, cyber warfare, underwater capabilities, and long-range strike capabilities. It also includes a nuclear component, possibly limited to the United States and the United Kingdom, on nuclear defense infrastructure.The agreement will focus on military capability, separating it from the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance that also includes New Zealand and Canada.
The French subs were to be conventional, the American ones nuclear. In addition the French deal was plagued by delays and cost overruns.

China's foreign affairs department spokesman Zhao Lijian said, "The US, UK and Australia are engaging in cooperation in nuclear-powered submarines that gravely undermines regional peace and stability, aggravates the arms race and hurts the international non-proliferation efforts".

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki attempted to walk back a statement by presidential climate envoy John Kerry which claimed President Joe Biden "had not been aware of what had transpired" following a submarine deal with Australia that upset the French.
"Of course he was aware of the French being upset," Psaki said in response to a question on the matter from Fox News' Peter Doocy. "He of course was aware, the president, of the French being displeased about the deal with the Australians. John Kerry also speaks regularly to the French as part of his role as the climate envoy. He's someone who also served as Secretary of State."
