it's not like a category 3 is something to laugh at, but I suppose this is relatively good news.
Gustav no longer expected to reach Category 4
HOUSTON (Reuters) - Hurricane Gustav was no longer expected to reach Category 4 strength before hitting the U.S. Gulf Coast, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said on Sunday.
Gustav was expected to have top winds of 127 mph (204 kph), Category 3 strength on the five-stage Saffir-Simpson scale of hurricane intensity, the hurricane center said in a report.

The DUmmie and the DNC are very sad at this news.
-
They will be very very sad if the levees don't blow open again. If Bush is responsible for Katrina's disaster he will certainly be responsible for a successful defense and evacuation, right ? right ? Bueller ? Bueller ?
-
I've been hearing over the last 2 years that the levees aren't even built up enough to withstand a Cat 3. Whatever makes it to land, things could still get ugly.
-
And these storms in the Gulf tend to weaken a bit right before reaching land. Sometimes dryer air from over land gets into the hurricane's rotational field and distrupts it. It's fairly likely that this will be a category 2 at most when it does.
-
Dry air usually weakens hurricanes before they make landfall. Gustav does not look as impressive on satellite.

and the water is shallower. hurrricanes like deep warm water.
but it's the storm surge that does most of the damage. those categories only consider wind speed. katrina
was a "mere" category 3 when she hit the shore, but she was still pushing a storm surge worthy of a category
5.

hurrevac has it at 125 at landfall.

Also, Katrina was much larger. It had hurricane force winds extending up to 125 miles from the eye.

Which Democrat Congressman will be Flyfishing when Gustav hits ?

It would be a kindness if the sea reclaimed the land upon which New Orleans is defined. It would solve so many problems.

I must have missed that one. I usually get ridiculed (not here) for my desire to see worrying about New Orleans a thing of the past.
The city may be old and steeped in lore and myth, but in the great scheme of things, we can get along fine without it. Did you know Dallas has three or four suburbs which are larger/more populated than New Orleans?

Why all this talk about Frank's cat?

The damn little shit turned over the water bowl.

I just talked to my folks, and they are already getting rainbands from gustav.
-
mississippi is getting ignored again. :whatever:

the storm is speeding up. not good news, as it will add another 20 mph to the wind speeds.
-
Yes, but it will pass through quicker, which means less rain and flooding in the long run. Fay, on the other hand, just sat there for days dumping rain that could be measured in feet in some places, despite only being a tropical storm.

less rain that way.

The Mississippi River is going to shift eventually and that would render New Orleans useless, since it is largely a port city. That will not be for another few hundred years though. I don't know why the government is funding the rebuilding of New Orleans after Katrina? If people want to rebuild and live there, fine with me, not with our tax money. I have been to New Orleans, it's really dirty and smells bad from all the drunk people who urinated.
