Title: Does anyone even care about the Olympics?
Post by: NRAInstructor on August 02, 2021, 09:56:02 AM
Between the US Women's soccer team and their bruised knees and all the politics and the covid theater...  I dunno.  I just feel like the Olympics are dead to me.  I'll be honest, I've never been a big sports guy (aside from sport shooting, that is) but what little love I had evaporated a long time ago with the introduction of political correctness, politics, etc.  But even before that, I always considered major sports to be Nero's fiddle.

Let me explain.

I have a friend who could tell you the name of every New England Patriot, not just today but throughout history.  Like Rain man, he can tell you every stat about every player and every game.  He easily has a quarter million  dollars worth of souvenirs and memorabilia.  Jerseys, signed balls, framed tickets, posters, coats, hats,  you name it.  I couldn't list all of it if I tried.

Yet he doesn't know the name of our town selectman.  He doesn't know our state reps or senators.  He barely knows who the president is.

Now, being an true conservative, I'm okay with all of that. Hell, it's your right to be completely ignorant of... well, just about everything except sports.  BUT! All he does is complain about the way things are, taxes, rights being trampled, and so forth.  Now, you might think that's a good thing.  You're probably saying to yourself, "Well, maybe he votes conservative".  Wrong.  We live in Massachusetts.  He votes democrat across the board, without even reading the names, let alone doing research.

How can this happen, you wonder?

Easy.  He comes from a long line of liberals, and he was always taught from a young age to just shut up, question nothing, and vote democrat.  That's it.  So that's what he does.  Try as I might to change him, I don't think he'll ever change.  This is why I'm the black sheep in my family.  I too come from a long line of liberals.  However, once I hit the age of reason (and discovered an interest in firearms), every single person in my family had the same attitude:  "Don't ask questions, just shut up and vote democrat".

As time went on and I got older, I took offense to being told not to ask questions and to just accept what I was told.  So I began to resist.  The more I rebelled (as my mother put it) the harder they tried, and the vicious cycle continued. Eventually, I became the family pariah. To this day, I speak to none of my relatives. Even my own mother.

But long before that, despite my general distaste for organized sports, I do remember being a young child and enjoying the Olympics in the 80s with my mother. There was a certain magic to them, particularly the winter Olympics (but I did enjoy summer moments, like Mary Lou Retton's gold medal).  My mother made a big deal of the opening and closing ceremonies, and we had little parties, and we enjoyed rooting on team USA in various events.  It was a good time.

As time went on, the Olympics lost more and more of their magic.  Maybe it's just me getting older, maybe it was the disconnect from my mother... but it just doesn't feel the same.  The best way I can describe it is having a real Christmas tree replaced with an artificial one (and not a good one).

I just wanted to see if anyone else felt the same way, or if it's just me.

Either way, I don't care about the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHA, or even the Olympics.  It's all Nero's fiddle, and people like my friend shut out the real world around them and enjoy their fiddle while the world burns around them, and I am not okay with that.

The Olympics started in Greece.

Greece is in Europe.

Europe is the home of white people.

To watch the Olympics would perpetuate structures of systemic white dominance and/or be cultural appropriation.

Now THAT is a solid answer

Don't give a rat's ass about sports in general. Just. Not. Interested. Especially "team" sports like football, basketball, hockey. I have a mild interest in baseball, and occasionally go to a minor league game (there's a team in my area). But in no way, shape or form do I care enough to memorize anything. I couldn't even tell you the name of the ball park they play in.

That said, the Olympics had a certain appeal to me, especially as a kid. First of all, most of the events are based on individual performance. Yeah, there are relays in swimming, track, etc.

Second, the Olympics occur only every 4 years, even though they switched things and now the Summer and Winter Games take place every 2 years. Still, you don't often get to see the steeplechase or even the high jump. Seems a bit fresh that way.

I remember being glued to the TV set in 1972 when the Black September terrorist group murdered the Israeli athletes in Munich. The look on Jim McKay's face when he haggardly looked at the camera and simply said, "They're all gone." Watching Muhammad Ali light the torch at the Summer Games in Atlanta in 1996. Bob Beamon's incredible long jump of 8.9 meters in Mexico City in 1968, a world record that stood for 23 years.

But I have yet, and I will not, watch any of the current Olympics.

Just. Not. Interested.

Can we get a big Nelson Ha Ha at the US Womans Soccer team who lost 1-0 to Canada in the semifinals, sending them to the bronze medal game. I don't know who they're playing for the bronze but I hope they kick the US teams ass.

Edit: Found out the US will be playing Australia for the bronze medal so....

I've semi-boycotted the Olympics since NBC bought the broadcast-rights.

Every edition since has been jammed with inexplicable editing, unnecessary tape-delays, and irrational gushing.

ABC presented it raw, live, and uncut.

Sports became my respite after those few months when there were literally almost none.  Yes, the George Floyd incident particularly put a damper on them the restart.  The virtue woke performative dance that sports leagues did at the very beginning of each league was insufferable.  But at least Major League Baseball and Golf (my two personal favorites) did it only for really one day.

Listen to lots of baseball/football/sports talk radio via phone apps, and there really has been no woke virtue signaling after the first day.  The NBA and NFL had already been suffering in my opinion.  If there is a game that am interested in that is on TV, I'll watch it with the mute button close by.  Actually, the worst part of watching games are the advertisements composed by far leftist millennial Madison Avenue jag offs preaching to the public.

The Olympics are great, even though I really don't give a crap about 95+% of the events.  I'll gladly root for our country and the patriotic men and women who are proud of our country.  The rest of bitter kneelers and quitters can win or lose and I really don't care.

My wife watches the gymnastics.  I used to watch women's beach volleyball but am afraid they'll be taking a knee or wearing burkas or some other nonsense.

Women's beach volleyball was more about their bikinis than anything else.  :rotf:  :naughty:

You should check out the womens water polo swimware. It tends to "ride up" after being in the pool...  :naughty: :naughty:

Noticed your signature line, reminds me of saw to size, file to fit and pound in place.  Actually I just need an excuse to re-post your diving picture.  Beautiful girl, what's her name?

Yep. If she's a serious competitor, she might learn that focusing on the skill/sport outweighs political theater. But something tells me she hasn't learned that yet.  :whatever:

finishing 11th out of 12 competitors tells me that she isn't a serious competitor and a waste of money and a team position to send over to Tokyo.

Well, according to her Wiki page, she threw a 77.78 meter toss in June 2018, which is 6th place on the all-time list. She also holds the world record in the weight throw with a mark of 25.60 m (83 ft 11+3⁄4 in) set in March 2017. She is a three-time national champion in the weight throw at the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships. She was the gold medalist in the hammer at the 2014 Pan American Sports Festival. She is also the 2019 Pan American Games Champion.

I think she WAS a serious contender but got woke -- and then started losing.

Well crap. More bad news from the Olympics. The anti-American Woman's Soccer team beat Australia 4-3 to take the bronze medal.

Well, bronze resembles the color of most shit, so I think that's an appropriate term.

Look on the bright side; the country that wants to use its military to enforce lockdowns didn't medal.
