For more than 3 months now, I have been dragged to a near standstill because we are moving from an internet environment maintained by on premises by my organization to a cloud based environment dictated by the DOD.
As fish go, I'm pretty small in this pond, but I hated the idea from the beginning.
First, there is no such thing as a "the cloud." There are only computers maintained on somebody else's property.
Second, that means maintaining those computers falls on someone you have no authority to fire.
Third, that requires a nexus between you and them that is nothing more than a soulless, impersonal, untouchable cog in the wheel.
I've already dealt with these idiots and they are everything I thought they would be and so much less.
They do not care. I am just 1 more person in 54 states and territories. I'm too low ranking to fire them and too far away to pimp slap them.
As soon as the announcement was made that we were going to make this transition, I started grumbling. I made my name here by providing solutions for Soldiers doing actual work. I'm a little protective of that reputation. It's why I now have my own horse.
I was also told to stop developing new solutions. I could work on previously deployed solutions, but nothing new. I fudged the definition a bit; but for the most part, I was reduced to doing nothing.
As in: nothing.
As in: sitting on my ass drinking 10 hours a day because I was bored and terrified of losing my reputation.
3 months of this.
Last week, we got some forward movement. They un****ed the services I'm allowed to have access to.
Hope.
I instantly threw myself into a long delayed project. I started laying out its architecture and data connections.
Then I tried to upload the background data I needed.
It took 5.5 hours to upload 3k records of 10-digit values (I didn't get home until 9pm last night because I didn't want to interrupt the upload). This is not tenable.
So I britched to the people running the show.
I'm told there are limits on performance because not everyone has the technical skills to do what I and my team are doing. The laggers could cause problems within the environment.
That's bullshit, I say. I have work to do. My people have work to do.
Yes, but they can't open it up, because that would be unfair to the low performers.

Can you get away with using a VPN, or enabling the hotspot on your phone?
