More states are making porch piracy a felony
Is this a good thing or bad?
Leave it to DU to debate whether stealing property from private property is a serious crime (https://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=15610652)
I mean, I know they're just considering what will happen when they get caught swiping things from their neighbors...

2. While it irritates me no end, how can they make it a felony if value of items stolen are minimal?
Most states classify felony theft as >$2,000. I can absolutely state that I've never had something dropped off valued more than a few hundred dollars and most of those required a signature.
I would be interested to know the mean and median value of such thefts.
I do think these thefts need to be prosecuted, though. Absolutely.
If I hold a gun to your head and it isn't loaded, should I get a pass on attempted murder? I know the mean and median of your IQ...it isn't impressive.

59. Put Them On Work Farms
Instead of prison. Plant trees. Grow food. No 3 hots and a cot.
Ha. Then you get all pissy when you hear inmates are made to work. Pick a side, moron.

41. The "Lock Her Up" mentality plays right into the hands of RWers who profit off the prison system.
There has to be a better way than ruining lives for an Amazon pkg.
There ya go. Let's go easy on people who trespass to steal.

44. The Punishment Fetish is strong in this thread.
A porch pirate says what?

58. Bad...it a minor even it is an annoying crime...why don't we just give everyone a felony....
Let's start with the person in your avatar.
So not only do they think it's just fine to shoplift, and to loot (because those stores are run by The Man, who "owes" them), but they think it's pretty much ok to walk onto someone's property and walk off with property.
In sum: whatever they want, they are entitled to have.
Wow.

STEP 1: Demand unending lockdowns, keeping people from going out to shop
STEP 2: Don't punish criminals stealing the only real substitute for shopping
STEP 3: Act shocked when people blame you for the collapse of civil order

Hey primitives, it's a "none of your concern" thing. You've made it apparent that you're not mature enough to properly address the subject.
These are the same nimrods who are constantly harping that conservatives are against things "until it happens to them". I say they need to apply their own medicine.

So if I have life saving medication sitting on my porch that is valued at less than $2k and it’s stolen, the perp shouldn’t get a felony. Got it.
In other words DUmmies, you have NO idea what’s in those packages. Not to mention if people didn’t try to get something for nothing, the punishment wouldn’t matter.
Don’t think the death penalty should apply to property crimes, don’t try to break into a home where the owners are armed.

Most states classify felony theft as >$2,000.
In California the misdemeanor-felony threshold is $950.
Some insurance plans reduce coverage for meds if one does not use their chosen package-delivery pharmacy service for long-term prescriptions.
This DU-thread was probably inspired by a Porch Piracy law passed in a state good little DUpipo hate, Georgia. From https://www.11alive.com/article/news/local/stealing-packages-a-felony-in-georgia/85-545570df-be8a-4179-861e-d64b561afa12 :
HB 94 states it is now a felony in the Peach State with prison time of up to five years for someone who is convicted theft by possession of stolen mail. According to the bill, someone can be charged with the crime by taking three or more packages, envelopes, or other related items from another person’s porch, steps, or mailbox without their permission.
The bill was signed by Gov. Brian Kemp on May 10 and went into effect on July 1.
The bill also says people who have at least 10 pieces of mail from at least three different addresses or mailboxes can be charged with felony theft by possession of stolen mail.
Each set of ten separate pieces of stolen mail addressed to three or more different places are considered separate crimes, according to the bill.
However, HB 94 gives judges discretion to rule that some cases be considered as a misdemeanor.
I highlighted a couple of relevant details the DU OPer ignorantly or deceptively omitted.
:hi5: for the Fyodorian reference, BTW!

We are glossing over the fact that a stranger sneaking up to a front door, uninvited, may well provoke an armed response, regardless of what's on the porch.

Yes sir. You’re exactly correct.

I guarantee most of the DUmmies, especially the ones commenting on this thread, have done this.
Ha. Then you get all pissy when you hear inmates are made to work. Pick a side, moron.
Yeah.
If what the DUmmy proposed were actually put into practice, he and the other DUmmies would be shrieking about how it was "Slavery."
