$140,000 'dream job' is available again

East Brother Island, in the San Francisco Bay, is hiring an innkeeper

It’s been called a “dream job,” and when this Bay Area innkeeping position was last advertised, the listing went viral. The role, managing the five-room inn on East Brother Island in San Pablo Bay, drew media attention from around the world and created an onslaught of interest from applicants. Now, the unusual and highly coveted job is available again.

It’s easy to see the appeal of earning $140,000 a year — housing and health benefits included — to live on your own private island in the San Francisco Bay, one of the most expensive and spectacularly beautiful places in the world.

The headlines in publications like Travel + Leisure during the previous opening promised a big paycheck and a fantasy. But in reading the job description, the role is clearly not for everyone. First, the position is actually a job not for an innkeeper, but innkeepers — a couple who can share the non-stop work East Brother requires. The pair promote the inn, manage the day-to-day operations of the front desk and gift shop, prepare two hot meals a day for 10 guests, and do all the housekeeping, including dishwashing and cleaning rooms between guests. One person in the couple must have a Coast Guard captain’s license to shuttle visitors to and from the island, and one needs to have “high-quality culinary experience” befitting the inn’s room rates, which start at $345 per night.

Think of it, DUmmies: a high-wage job WITH BENEFITS in the paradise of the SF Bay Area. You even get your OWN PRIVATE STREET to defecate in. (https://www.democraticunderground.com/100215599696)

Through the years, we've heard that a $15/hr min wage plus full benefits and a pension is the starting point for even a burger flipper. You'd THINK this job - which involves working in relative solitude in one of their most revered liberal bastions - would send the DUmmies to their 386DX to whip up a new resume in WordPerfect. You would be wrong, however, because a careful reading of the job description implies that the work might be difficult, and definitely requires skills. Skills other than writing poetry and trying to look like Robert Johnson when they pick up their flea market guitar.

2. when first made news two years ago... "140k to live on island'

looks like couple who took it on lasted two years. details... 140K for TWO people working 80 to 90 hours per week.

Joey Whispers is paying about that much to do NOTHING. Why bother?

3. Requiring a married couple sounds illegal to me PLUS is it 140K for EACH or both? F this.

Yes, please clarify. That DUmmy EARNED his Cheeto-fingers. Damned if he's going to soak them in vinegar and baking soda for anything less than LeBron money.

5. both, IF they can earn enough profits...so looks like 140K not guaranteed

Key word is IF. Remember, DUmmies always want a piece of the action, but when push comes to shove and they realize they have to work to get said piece, they freeze up and go home to wait for checks from Joey Whispers.

Since the average DUmmy seems to be about 800 years old, I wouldn't hope any new stimmys anytime soon. Enjoy the 99c pack of hotdogs, guys.

The SF Gate article does not use the M-word:

The qualifications for this are very particular, and the positions demand considerable work, which is the real reason for Star Moron CurtEastPoint's "F this". I wonder whether any DUpipo realized that in addition to the $140K, the couple would also receive housing and board as part of their job. In the SF Bay Area, that housing would be the equivalent of another $36K-$48K a year.

IIRC, rent is on the order of $3K-$4K a month, so they're only silver-plated.

My in-laws have run a bed and breakfast inn in the vicinity of the Grand Canyon for nigh onto 30 years now. Whenever family comes to visit, we're always put to work (as well we should be) so I have a slight inkling as to how much work is involved in running an inn like that.

Add to that the NEED for the Captain's license for ferrying guests out to the property, and there isn't a single denizen of Skinner's Island of Misfit ****-ups who could last the first month in that job. Their penchant for lying around in their own filth would catch up with them all too quickly...

Hey man!  Long time no see.  Since I deleted Facebook there are a few of the old Cave members I don't see very often.  Hope you and your family are doing well.

It's doubtful most of the DUmmies have a clue what's required to get a USCG Masters License, but that doesn't matter because they couldn't get past the first question which is "Can you pass a drug test?".

I’ll bet they only need the six pack license
