Ted Kennedy appearance at DNC likely
The proud old lion of Democratic party is getting ready to roar again tonight.
Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.), who was not expected to make the trip to Denver because he is battling deadly brain cancer, has not just made it to the Democratic Convention - he might appear on the podium.
.
.
.
If Kennedy manages to muster up the strength to speak - as he has done in many Democratic conventions before - it's likely to be a tearjerker for the party faithful and an electrifying moment for Barack Obama's presidential campaign.
PHOTOS: A GUIDE TO THE DNC'S TOP SPEAKERS
Kennedy secretly flew to the Mile High City on Sunday, over the objections of some of his doctors who worried that his compromised immune system could expose him to danger.
Kennedy arrived with a speech already written and a seat reserved in a special section where the rest of the Kennedy clan will be sitting.

Nuggets on some of tonight's speakers
Speaker Nancy Pelosi (CA-8, Elected June 1987, 10th term)
-- Highest ranking female in government ever
-- A Baltimore native and child of the Baltimore Democratic machine before going West and settling in San Francisco. Her father, Thomas D'Alesandro Jr., served in the House from 1939 to 1947 and was mayor of Baltimore for 12 years. Her brother, who shares his father's name, was also mayor of Baltimore 20 years later, from 1967 to 1971.
-- Met her husband at Trinity College in Washington, D.C. He became a real estate investor in San Francisco.
-- In 1976, Pelosi returned to Maryland to run Jerry Brown's presidential primary campaign. (Incidentally, in 1992, Brown was the last failed presidential candidate to have his name placed in a roll call vote in either party.)
Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO, Elected 2006)
-- An early and ardent endorser of Obama; has since been one of his most effective surrogates.
-- A 4th-generation Missourian
-- Waited tables for six years as she worked her way through college and law school at the University of Missouri.
-- Clerked for the Missouri Court of Appeals in Kansas City and then got a job as an assistant prosecutor in Kansas City. In 1993, she became the first female prosecutor in Jackson County (Kansas City).
-- In 2006, she became the first woman elected to the United States Senate from Missouri.
Maya Soetoro-Ng (Obama's half-sister. They share a mother. Her father was Indonesian.)
-- Soetoro-Ng, 36, cites Obama as a father figure, as her parents divorced when she was just 9.
-- Holds a Ph.D. in comparative education from the University of Hawaii.
-- Teaches 9th grade world cultures and 11th grade U.S. history and the constitution at an all-girls school in Honolulu. She's married to Konrad Ng, a Chinese-Canadian. They have one daughter, Suhaila, who was 2 in Sept. 2007.
-- One of the four bumper stickers on her car reads, "1-20-09. End of an Error." One other is a "Women for Obama" sticker.
-- Said their mother would wake them up in the middle of the night -- to look at the moon.
-- On religion, she says, "Philosophically, I would say that I am Buddhist."
-- Asked what effect their mother's "wanderlust" had on Obama, she said, "Maybe part of the reason he was so attracted to Chicago and his wife, Michelle, was that sense of rootedness. He elected to make a choice, whereas Mom sort of wandered through the world collecting treasures."
Said their mother used to joke that Obama would be the first black president.
-- She said, Obama "was always good at winning arguments through very diplomatic ways, right. He would make you feel apologetic for losing an argument."

I believe 5:00 p.m.--but whether that's eastern time or mountain time, I have no idea.
Given that the news media, like my fellow alum Skins, is biased towards eastern time, I imagine it's eastern time, and so it would be two hours earlier, mountain time.

It's rather interesting.Obama is the Dem nominee for president, educated at the best schools & Lives in a mansion. Obamas sister has a PHD and lives a comfortable life. Lil Bro lives in a shack in Rwanda or somewhere like that.

I'm headed down to Denver after work, just to see how much shit I can stir up with the protestors outside before CinC-Wife calls me home for supper. Until they have the Hillary/Obama catfight on the floor, thet's where all the fun is going to be; outside the convention.
-
Hmmmm.
A number of Sen. Hillary Clinton's top advisers will not be staying in Denver long enough to hear Barack Obama accept the nomination for president, according to sources familiar with their schedules.
Clinton will deliver her speech Tuesday night. She will hold a private meeting with her top financial supporters Wednesday at noon, and will thank her delegates at an event that afternoon. Former president Bill Clinton will speak that night. Several of Hillary Clinton's supporters are then planning to leave town.

Hmmmm.
This of course is about that supporter of the worthier Democrat candidate being called an "Uncle Tom":
So when I tell that story he comes over to me and he said, ‘There were 35,000 in Springfield (for Obama’s introduction of vice presidential pick Joe Biden) 35,000 people in Springfield'
I said, ‘Well that doesn’t mean anything, just that 35,000 more people drank the Kool-Aid.'
I said, 'See, he will not let this alone.' I said, 'What are you signifying.'
He said, 'I’m not signifying.'
I said, 'Oh, they’ve got another name for it now?'
I said, 'Why can’t you be gracious in victory as I am gracious in defeat?'
He says, 'Well let me tell you, Barack has never ... he’s a clean-cut guy ... he’d never believe in gutter politics ...'
I said, 'OK, let me go, OK, see you guys.'
And he says, 'No, no, no, no. I’m telling you Barack is a clean-cut guy. He’d never believe in gutter politics and that’s why when the Clintons ...'
And I said, 'I know it’s time for me to go now.'
And I walked over to the elevator and he yelled across the lobby: 'Uncle Tom'
And I came back and I said: ‘Excuse me. What did you say?’ And he grabbed me and started laughing. And I said, ‘No, no, no. What did you say?’ And he wouldn’t say anything. And I said, ‘Did you just call me an Uncle Tom?’ And he didn’t say anything. And then I just sort of let him have it.
That part I won’t repeat what I said.

Chicago Clinton Supporter: Obama Mentor Called Me ‘Uncle Tom’
Racial infighting among Democrats, which marred the presidential primaries, has flared up again at the party’s convention in Denver, where a black Hillary Clinton delegate is accusing a black Barack Obama delegate of calling her an “Uncle Tom.â€
Delmarie Cobb of Chicago told FOX News Monday that Illinois Senate President Emil Jones hurled the racially charged insult against her late Saturday for speaking out in support of Clinton. Although Democrats at the convention are trying to project an image of unity, there is lingering bitterness between the Clinton and Obama camps, in part because each side accused the other of playing the race card during the primaries.
On Monday, Illinois’ National Organization for Women President Bonnie Grabenhofer reportedly called on Jones to resign immediately from the Illinois state Senate for using the racial slur.
“That was a pretty horrible comment,†Grabenhofer, also a Clinton delegate, told The Sun-Times
http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/08/25/chicago-clinton-supporter-obama-mentor-called-me-uncle-tom/
and we haven't even gotten off to a running start yet.

Oh my, there's a lot going on in Denver.
1:45 pm PST
DENVER — Sen. Barack Obama credits gay activists with making the Democratic Party “immeasurably stronger.â€
In a letter to the party’s LGBT Caucus — the acronym stands for Lesbian/ Gay/ Bisexual/Transgender — Obama said the group “will be crucial to bringing our Party together and sweeping us to victory on November 4th.â€
The letter was distributed at today’s meeting of the LGBT Caucus at the Denver Convention Center.
“Congratulations on being part of the largest LGBT Caucus delegation in Democratic National Convention history,†Obama wrote. “I look forward to seeing the LGBT community turn out in record numbers to help create the changes we seek.â€
Also meeting today was the convention’s Recovery Caucus, composed of members struggling to overcome substance abuse problems, which was addressed by Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I.).

Oh my, Barry "Goldwater" Obama's got some public-relations work to do.....with his own supporters.
Many Obama supporters never received 3am VP wake-up text
"Barack has chosen Senator Joe Biden to be our VP nominee," read the Obama campaign's early morning SMS message to his supporters. Trouble was, even by that time, many already knew it, and some weren't even getting the message.
The original plan was for Barack Obama supporters nationwide to be the first to receive the news of his vice presidential running mate. But well over two hours before many of those supporters received what ended up being, perhaps in an inadvertent tribute to Hillary Clinton, a 3am EDT wake-up call on August 25, CNN correspondent John King was the first to go live with the news that two highly-placed, then anonymous sources within the Democratic Party had confirmed to him that Joseph Biden was Sen. Obama's choice.
"(I) am happy with Senator Biden joining our team. I am not happy with the way Team Obama handled making this announcement," wrote one commenter named Barbara on Barack Obama's presidential blog Saturday. "I did receive my text at 3 am while I was sleeping this morning. All week I worked with the cell phone out on my desk...How disappointing is this to go to sleep and have my boyfriend who did not sign up for the text, call me at 5:30 with the news in full blast on the TV!"
As another commenter named Katie wrote, "The text messaging gimmick has me miffed. The campaign gets this one free pass, but don't use your supporters again to control the news cycle. A message in the 'wee hours of Saturday morning' -- lame. I expect better going forward."
Earlier, Obama supporters had been told to expect the announcement at 8:00 am EDT, on the morning prior to the presumptive nominee's first joint appearance with his VP choice -- which was already well known to be Saturday.
But what Obama supporters may not have expected was that the text message promise would end up as the equivalent of throwing down the gauntlet for traditional reporters.

I don't understand why he needs to make his acceptance speech in another venue. Why waste all this money from his contributors?? They have to recreate the entire show in a bigger stadium so the american people can be awed by attendance??
The news channels covering the event will have to move all their equipment, throw down miles of cable and also practically shut down Denver traffic during rush hour so the Messiah can announce at a Stadium. This is just a prelude to what's coming if he becomes our President, wasteful spending to satisfy his over inflated ego. Becoming President is all about himself and not for the american people.
I hope the voting public wakes up and sees through this facade.
-
I've been watching this all day.
When the Invocation was read (saw the prompter built into the podium), cameras paned the audience. Most of the people had their attention someplace else. Heathen's that they are. With the national cameras on them, they could have given the appearance of respecting a religious rite.
-
Also meeting today was the convention’s Recovery Caucus, composed of members struggling to overcome substance abuse problems, which was addressed by Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I.).
If anybody knows about substance abuse, it is a Kennedy.

Politico's editor in chief and a colleague report on tension between the Clinton and Obama camps over Bill Clinton's speech. I've downplayed reports of tensions in the past. But sources back up the Politico to a point: things are getting a little hairy as the reality of the convention sets in. Obama aides acknowledge that there has been some recent bumps on the road but insist that reports of boiled over anger are way overplayed.
It's not surprising that a former president thinks he ought to be able to talk about what he wants. And President Clinton wants to talk about the economy as much as the theme of the night, which is national security. The Obama campaign has asked Clinton to stick to his theme. This dispute played out a bit ago, but frustration lingers.
Another point of tension, sources say, is that the Obama campaign is aware that Mark Penn is advising Bill Clinton on the speech. Obama's campaign doesn't like Mark Penn. (Also writing: Don Baer, Clinton's former communications director. Obama's campaign is fine with Baer.)
On the Clinton side, there is some anger that the Obama campaign did not sufficiently communicate to Democrats about the (dismal) prospects of Hillary Clinton joining the ticket. One Clinton adviser: "On the vetting, please. They did not prepare the ground for it not to be her. The last 72 hours were poorly scripted."
Also: Cheryl Mills, Clinton's chief negotiator, is a passionate advocate for her client. But she's been getting along with David Plouffe as well as could be expected.
The Obama campaign is trying to beat back these reporters. They do not want to be distracted by the blow-up, and they do not want reporters to focus on fighting.

Just saw Pelosi speak at the DNC Convention. Reminds me of a Communist/Nazis propaganda rally.

it was odd that ending the war got as cheered as much as it did shen she mentioned it. I know it's a huge thing with the spoon-bending left, but it's not even a top three issue any more according to the last poll I saw . . .

I wonder if the DUmmies realize that when they contribute to obama from DU's obama contribution page, that DU gets credit for it . . . and it's donations that get you credentials for the convention.

Police arrested 2 men who appear who were plotting an assassination on Barrack Obama... :o

Wow. I just went to the GOP site that's right there at ground zero, watching the Democrats.
There's a lot of stuff there, but something in particular caught my eye.
Former congressman Tim Penny (D-Minnesota) endorsed John McCain.

If anybody remembers the Clinton Congresses, Tim Penny was a really prominent Democrat congressman.
Even though reasonably young, he retired, but I'm not sure when.

Plot to Kill Obama: Shoot From High Vantage Point
DENVER (CBS4) ― CBS4 has now learned at least four people are under arrest in connection with a possible plot to kill Barack Obama at his Thursday night acceptance speech in Denver. All are being held on either drug or weapons charges.
CBS4 Investigator Brian Maass reported one of the suspects told authorities they were "going to shoot Obama from a high vantage point using a ... rifle … sighted at 750 yards."
Law enforcement sources tell Maass that one of the suspects "was directly asked if they had come to Denver to kill Obama. He responded in the affirmative."
The story began emerging Sunday morning when Aurora police arrested 28-year-old Tharin Gartrell. He was driving a rented pickup truck in an erratic manner according to sources.
Sources told CBS4 police found two high-powered, scoped rifles in the car along with camouflage clothing, walkie-talkies, a bulletproof vest, a spotting scope, licenses in the names of other people and methamphetamine. One of the rifles is listed as stolen from Kansas.
Subsequently authorities went to the Cherry Creek Hotel to contact an associate of Gartrell's. But that man, who was wanted on numerous warrants, jumped out of a sixth floor hotel window. Law enforcement sources say the man broke an ankle in the fall and was captured moments later. Sources say he was wearing a ring with a swastika, and is thought to have ties to white supremacist organizations.
A third man -- an associate of Gartrell and the hotel jumper was also arrested. He told authorities that the two men "planned to kill Barack Obama at his acceptance speech."

Hannity is accurately labeling this as the "America is A Mean Place" convention.
I suggest we all try to find mean avatars.
I'll go first (give me a few minutes, I just got the idea).
Nice idea, freedumb! How do you like mine?
*doh* Reverse reading threads puts one in a bad spot sometimes.
BEAUTIFULLY MEAN!!

hard to tell just how serious this was as a legitimate threat . . .
Arrests over possible plot to kill Obama
Colorado police have arrested two men linked to white supremacist groups and armed with sniper rifles in what some fear was a plot to kill US presidential candidate Barack Obama.
Police stopped a car in Denver on Sunday after it was seen “weaving†through traffic and found two rifles, scopes and ammunition, local newspapers reported.
One of the car's occupants, 28-year-old Tharin Gartrell, was taken into custody immediately.
It is understood the arrest led officers to search a nearby hotel, where a second man reportedly jumped out of a sixth floor window when police knocked at his door.
He was arrested after a brief chase by police, who said he had a broken ankle and had possessed weapons.
One of men arrested was said to have made a threat against Mr Obama, who is in Denver for the Democratic National Convention.
The exact nature of the threat is not yet known.
US network NBC reported the two men sported the tattoos and jewellery associated with white supremacists.

and besides, the dem convention was actually less depressing than the zombie-like performance that the Dodgers phoned in against the phillies tonight. :banghead: :censored: :thatsright:

boy she is spinning fairy tales, Baracks single mom didn't scrimp and save and work to support him. She married a muslim man and carted Barack off to Indonesia, then she shipped him back to Hawaii for her parents to raise.

sentiment, that a black lady could be in this place in America. She did a good job. It is too bad this was not the very first impression America had of Michelle Obama.

it was a very good speech that accomplished it's objectives; to draw a sharper picture of the personal side of BHO, and to attempt to remake her image after her remarks about it being the first time she was prousd of her country.
it was a very good speech in an otherwise rudderless night.
the whole camera meetup thing at the end was a bit much.

Denver has very loooong 3 days ahead of it.
