The Des Moines Register announced Thursday that the reporter who found years-old offensive tweets by a local man who raised $1 million for charity is no longer with the paper.
The paper's executive editor Carol Hunter published an op-ed on Thursday night and informed readers that Aaron Calvin, the journalist behind the controversial profile about 24-year-old Carson King, is "no longer with the Register."
Social media found past offensive tweets on his own Twitter account after the story was published. Before locking his Twitter account, Calvin issued an apology for his own tweets."Hey just wanted to say that I have deleted previous tweets that have been inappropriate or insensitive. I apologize for not holding myself to the same standards as the Register holds others."
Come on down Aaron Calvin! You've been cancelled!

A Des Moines Register reporter who was let go this week over a piece that received heavy backlash has blamed "right-wing ideologues" for his firing and suggested he'd experienced oppression like "women and journalists of color" face in the industry.
Aaron Calvin's profile on 24-year-old Iowan and impromptu philanthropist Carson King, who raised over $1 million for a children's hospital, sparked an uproar because it had referred to a pair of racist tweets King had written as a 16-year-old high school student -- tweets for which King expressed remorse.
Calvin himself said he was caught off-guard after his critics delved into his own social media history and found racist and other offensive tweets. The Register announced on Thursday that Calvin was "no longer with the paper," as his tweets went against their employee policy.
First of all, Aaron Calvin went after Carson King who raised $1 million for University of Iowa's Stead Children's Hospital. Nothing political right there.
Then he found racist Tweets by King and ran it.
Now, Calvin is playing victim and calls himself an oppressed minority. :mental:

I used to find the expression “kill your heroes” valuable. Too often, we idolize individuals, assigning them some sort of unimpeachable aura. So to “kill your heroes” meant to recognize that your heroes were human, flaws and all. William Faulkner was an alcoholic. Alexander Pushkin opted to duel over his wife and died in the process. Ernest Hemingway was a serial cheater.
The endgame of this metaphorical killing was never destruction. If anything, it was to stave off the inevitable crashing disappointment you might otherwise experience had you not prepared yourself emotionally for your idols’ imperfections. This killing was ironically a humanizing one—it made you realize that your heroes were far more like you than you initially anticipated.
