McDonald's hated 'eco-friendly' paper straws cannot be recycled - unlike the plastic versions they replaced.
The fast food giant switched from plastic to paper across their 1,361 restaurants in the UK and Ireland, after facing pressure to become more eco-friendly.
But customers have been critical of the new straw, saying they dissolve before a drink can be finished, and become 'mushy' when drinking a milkshake.
Replacing plastic straws with paper straws proves to be a huge mistake.
Paper straws cannot be recycled and have to be burned.
Plastic straws can be recycled.

Anyone who grew up in the 60s and used paper straws with their milk at school cafeterias could have predicted that switching to paper straws would result in unhappy customers. The recycling issue has to do with the recyclers' equipment being unable to handle the thickness of the new straws. IOW, someone at M didn't do all the necessary homework.

but switching to paper straws was a good virtue signal that made them feel like they were doing the right thing to save sea turtles from getting straws stuck in their noses, and isn't that what is the most important thing...?
