The surprising argument for extending food stamps to pets
Edward B. Johnston Jr. would rather give his dinner to his dog than watch the dog go hungry. That is why the 59-year-old Mississippi man is petitioning the Department of Agriculture to let him use food stamps on kibble and pet treats.
Pets are part of the family, Johnston argued, and families should not have to break up when they hit what he calls a “financial rough patch.” He is asking that the federal government modify food-stamp rules to make it easier for low-income people like him to buy food for their pets.
The petition has little chance of succeeding, experts say, given the political and logistical challenges of changing food stamps, otherwise known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. But it has attracted the attention of nearly 80,000 signers on the popular petition site Care2, as well as a number of animal welfare organizations.

2. I think it's a good idea, or something similar to this would be helpful.
It would make it easier for low income people to have pets too. This might help get some of the homeless pets out of our shelters. Especially in areas where the shelters are over crowded.

If you can't afford it you shouldn't have it. either give it up or cook it for dinner.

Instructions unclear, baby now in slow cooker.

What's next? Demanding that pets can be included as dependents on the 1040 form and eligible for a deduction?

Can't afford a dawg, don't get a dawg.

If you can't afford the vet,...you can't afford the pet.

^^^^ Yep! Feeding is cheap. Vet visits, no. I spend more on my doggies health care than I do myself.
It always amazes me that the dummies, who just cannot seem to be able to feed themselves, go out and get a dog or a cat. :mental:

Today's joke, tomorrow's Prog policy platform.

Sounds like a great idea, and it looks like they have at least 80,000 volunteers to pay for it. As long as I don’t feel a hand in my pocket, go for it.

Meals on Wheels gives my mom-in-law a bag of dog food every week when they stop by. It's a great help to her; but I would NOT like the idea of using her SNAP benefits for that dog.

If someone chooses to spend some of their food stamp money or their pets then I don't have a problem with it. I just don't want them to get extra food stamps for having a pet.
