Dishonorable Discharge Not As Weighty As Before. Employers Don't Hire Vets Anyway.
If anything employers avoid hiring vets because of health care risks and risks of PTSD. The GOP has scrapped funding or ended programs that help vets get hired. Vets no longer get special consideration in hiring unless it is a reason NOT hire them. In all honesty our vets have largely been abandoned and forgotten. There are no programs to help vets now unless they are a charity or crowd funded.
Evian as the GOP prepares to cut funding that benefits vets, or works at privatizing the VA and degrading health care for veterans and retired veterans, there is no outcry from the public. Average Joe citizen could care less from what I can tell. Sure people say thanks for your service, but it is pretty much hollow verbiage.
In fact a lot of Americans particularly GOPPERS think vets get too much from the government. The GOP pretty much calls veterans benefits "WELFARE". Even if you have no legs or arms or have terminal PTSD you should get a job and get over your service. "You VOLUNTEERED so you know what you signed up for." At least that is what Trump believes as well as his followers. Besides if you come back dead that is ok, your financial obligations ends.
After all you got good pay, free health care, housing, meals and other benefits civilians have to work for. So what is the beef?
So why serve a truly ungrateful bunch of despicable people. After a lot of them elected a 5 time draft dodger who wants to throw Bergdahl out of a plane. I am sure there are many Trumpers who would do it if Trump asked.
As a Vietnam vet who went to Vietnam 50 years ago November 6, I am sick of what out country has done to our vets.
:thatsright: Wow, you are soooooooooo wrong on that you old buzzard.

Hoppy is now claiming that he went to Vietnam, but a few days ago he posted that he had served stateside. TMN lies?? Say it ain't so!!

What wars or branch of the service did obama serve in? the F**king choom gang? :loser:
Your chocolate hero is a freaking loser who never accomplished anything in his life.
When I served it was the democrats and left wingers who heaped scorn on those in the military. :bird:

Has Nematode ever worked outside of government?
There are quite a few immigrants in the building where I work, possibly a majority, yet I know there are several vets working here. And I've just been here 14 months.

Hear, hear!
At least we don't shower those in the military with terms like "Baby killers," "Mercenaries," "Nazis," and "War Criminals" the way left wingers do.
I recall a couple months ago, a DUmmy writing that "I bet there's a large white wing racist contingent in the military."
And, a couple years ago, in a DU thread that started as just bashing 'American Sniper,' another DUmmy put out a despicable post in which he referred to US military troops/ veterans as "Monsters," referred to their tours of duty as a "Professional orgy of violence and murder," implied that we shouldn't want to have them as our neighbors and in our communities, and later said that the US military veterans who commit suicide "are the ones with a shred of humanity left. People with actual emotions and a moral compass."
Hey TMN, we may not do as much for our veterans as we should, but at least we don't openly spew hatred and scorn against them the way your side does.

I see Nematode doesn't want to acknowledge the validity of draft deferments. Thing is, Bill Clinton also had similar deferments, until he didn't. Then he wangled his way to England to avoid being drafted. What Clinton did was legal, but dodging the draft. Trump simply had deferments until he was classified 4-F.
Nematode probably dislikes that 4-F. Were it not for one thing, , I'd wish Nematode had to walk 5 or 10 miles with a bone spur in his heel.

A dishonorable discharge is like having a felony on record.

Most employment apps I recall specifically asked, "Have you ever been arrested?" I don't recall the particulars of questions about military service. I assume it is asked about, but I don't recall whether the apps ask about discharge circumstances. So a dishonorable discharge might not come out while being considered for a job.
Bergdahl would probably be different, as his family name is memorable and he's rather notorious. I wish the military court could cut him off for life for ALL government social programs.

I never seen an application ask about military service as well. A dishonorable discharge would turn up in a background check.
Reasons For A Dishonorable Discharge
http://thelawdictionary.org/article/reasons-for-a-dishonorable-discharge/
Consequences of a Dishonorable Discharge
When a major crime has been committed, the dishonorable discharge is rarely the end of the legal proceedings. Individuals who are dishonorably discharged may still be facing criminal charges in regular or military courts. They may be sentenced to jail time or to pay fines. However, a record that includes a dishonorable discharge can follow the individual through the rest of their life.
People who have been dishonorably discharged may be shunned by military personnel, and they typically lose their entitlement to any military benefits for which they would otherwise have been eligible. Moreover, they may find it difficult to obtain employment and they will be ineligible for unemployment benefits. Some will be barred from owning a gun, holding public office and voting. Successfully appealing the dishonorable discharge may restore some of these benefits and entitlements, but the process is difficult and frequently futile.
Desertion is punishable by death.

Apparently not, unless it was one of those after-school jobs as grocery carry-out boy or something during the early 1960s.
After his military service, he immediately went to work for the Department of Labor, although as a state employee or a federal employee, I disremember. Having worked there for decades, he amassed quite a large pension, which accounts for his affluence in his old age.
Just as there's term limits for some politicians, and assistance maximums for some welfare recipients, there should be tenure limits on governmental employment so as to ensure a healthy turnover of new blood, new people, new ideas, and that people like hypertensive ol' Bob don't hog all the goodies.

Didn't Obama try and stop employers from asking about criminal records? Being a vet might be worse than being a felon.
OTOH, most small business owners tend to look upon the military and veterans favorably.

Stumpy is full of shit. My company actively recruits vets especially those about to transition out of the military. Vets are more reliable, more trustworthy and just all around better employees.

I work in higher ed and every application I've seen recently asks about military service. At least here in NC, the state gives preference points for disabled veterans, veterans and spouses of disabled veterans. Requires submission of DD214.
