Just breaking on ESPN Sports Center.

Michael Phelps just won his 8th Gold Medal in Beijing breaking the previous record for Gold Medals in a single Olympics.

The Chinese are calling Phelps "The Great American Superfish".

BEIJING -- A journey that started four years ago after his six-gold performance in Athens and included 17 swims over nine days here ended triumphantly for Michael Phelps on Sunday.

Phelps earned his unprecedented eighth Olympic gold medal of the 2008 Olympics as he swam the butterfly leg of the Americans' world-record win in the 4x100m medley relay.

Aaron Peirsol led off in the backstroke leg, Brendan Hansen swam the breast and Jason Lezak anchored in the free, the same three who won gold in Athens. Phelps swam the prelims of that race in Athens, giving up his finals spot to Ian Crocker.

Phelps tied Mark Spitz with his seventh gold medal a day earlier in the 100m butterfly, winning by the slimmest of margins, .01 of a second over Milorad Cavic.

His quest was almost derailed in Day 2 of the meet in the 4x100m free relay, but Lezak's unbelievable anchor leg kept the quest alive.

It was a good race to watch.  Just amazing.  And Phelps looked stunned when Lezak finished.

Yesterday, one of the NBC Sports commentators--it might have been Jim Lampley--said that some of the NBC Sports staff figured out how long, in actual length, Phelps' winning margin was in the 100 butterfly, where he won by a hundredth of a second.  Here goes--take a common pencil.  See the metal on the eraser end, and the eraser?  It's less than an inch.  That was how much Phelps' half-stroke got him as a margin of victory.

It could have been 90 meters, for the result.  And it was less than an inch.

Interestingly, I don't see the kind of wild reaction we did back when Spitz won his.

Changing times, I guess.

Better and more coverage.  Plus when Spitz won his 7 medals there was something a little more attention grabbing going on at the '72 games.

But, didn't that happen after the swimming had been completed?

True, but the cast of Today was having orgasms over it, and now we have the DVD!
Great accpomlishment, but I'm sick of the celeb status NBC keeps trying to give our athletes.

Yeah, the Michael Phelps Show is starting to wear on me. His accomplishments are terrific but I'm tired of NBC giving this guy a daily tongue bath.

I'm disappointed that NBC hasn't featured other gold medalists. Did you know we've won golds in Fencing, Sailing, Equestrian, Shooting, Wrestling, Cycling, etc? Yeah, unless you hunt for it, you would never know.

I guess because they aren't hot and half-naked when performing their sport, they don't qualify as worth of TV coverage. It's disappointing.

The fencing winners were on the Today show...for a pretty lengthy interview. So have the track people, the gymnasts, all the swimmers, the woman shot putter was spotlighted last night.

I think because there are soooo many hours of coverage now....NBC, USA, and I can't remember what other stations, (I think there are 4 or 5)...it depends on what channel you are watching as to how much you get. It's just not only at night during NBC primetime.

I have to work during the day so I don't get to see all of their coverage. I think if they took out the fluff and a lot of the heats and qualifiers and just showed the main events, I think they could cover a lot more in the primetime when everyone is watching.

I've only been watching the primetime and I can tell you that it's been nothing but The Michael Phelps show. Now that swimming is over they have started covering other things which I'm enjoying. Trampoline was weird though.  I didn't even know that was an Olympic sport. :lmao:

I saw the Trampoline last night too! When did that become an Olympic event?
