Tropical Storm Fay Arrives in Florida
FORT MYERS, Fla. — Tropical Storm Fay made landfall on Florida’s southwest coast early Tuesday morning, flooding roads, cutting power and knocking down trees but causing less destruction than the hurricanes that slammed the area in 2004 and 2005.

A slow-moving, soggy storm, Fay never achieved hurricane status before coming ashore around 5 a.m. Eastern time near Cape Romano, south of Naples, after shifting slightly east overnight.

“The way the geography of southwest Florida coast is set up, you get just a slight jog to the right and it’s going to come in, and that’s exactly what happened,” said Dennis Feltgin, meteorologist at the National Hurricane Center. “It was so close to the coast.”

Because of that tilt, Fay spent less time over water and less time strengthening than initially forecast. It reached land with sustained winds of 60 miles per hour, too slow to qualify as a hurricane, and with a heavy, soaking rain that could bring as much as 10 inches of water to some areas.

In and around Naples and Fort Myers on Tuesday morning, police officials closed several roads as water reached knee-high depths in some areas. Wind bent street signs and tossed palm fronds and other debris across roads.

I'm in Orlando...leaving back for D.C. tomorrow.  I feel for the people that just got here for their week at Disney.

I hope they got insurance on their trip packages.

Hain't no thang really. Latest has her as a Tropical Storm and not a real big one either. It'll rain alot and blow a bit. Nothing more than we get during a typical afternoon shower, just for a bit longer. ;)

And no doubt we'll be feeling the effects even up here with more rain.

I read in one of the local rags/websites that this place has had the most rain since 1938, which by no small coincidence is the same year of the hurricane that hit New York.

Damn that Bush and his weather control!

Don't worry - we are just testing a new release of the VRWC's weather control machine software. If this test is successful, then we will be able to pin point bad weather in a radius as small as a DUmmy's basement.

I don't know about y'all but I am getting excited!  :-)

(I really do hope all of you in Florida are safe and receive minimal damage from this)

We had a waterfront condo in Key West until after Wilma. I rode out Rita, but took the last flight out before Wilma.....$990 for a one way flight to E Tn! After finding out the condo complex was vastly uninsured....being assessed for damages, getting the new HOA fees (they more than doubled), and finding out what our new hazard insurance cost was going to be :censored:.....we were lucky enough to sell ours the next spring.

Prayers out for you all in the path.......

It doesn't look bad at all....yes, it's raining and probably will be until tomorrow.  The brunt of this storm will be hitting the east coast while the eye goes up the west coast.  Still, I'll be going to work today and tomorrow...this is just another afternoon thunderstorm.
The retards in Broward closed schools today and it's their first day of school.  Nothing like throwing off the plans of thousands of parents because you let a little rain derail your opening day.

It is still just a gale. A big gale of a tropical gale, but a gale none the less. Unless a big beal is not made of this, and every storm, the budgets might get cut among the Weatherfolk.

Did  you see the bozo who tried to sail/kite surf? Picked hin up, slamed him onto the sand after 50 yds in the air, picked him up ahain, and slamed him into a building another 50 yds along. Word is he isn't that bad, and is expected to live.

But it was a CLEAR attempt to make the "Darwin" list.

Minus the storm damage, Florida could use the rian.  So could we here in Western NC.  Hope it comes here and hangs out for a few days.

According to what I just heard on Fox News and on our local news earlier....it "should" be heading up this way Thursday or early Friday. Depending on where you are, if it's going to come here (E TN)...you'll get it too. We haven't had rain in a couple of weeks and we are really needing it! We're back in "severe drought" range again. :(

I think you actually buckle yourself into the thing.  which was his first, and perhaps most tragic mistake.

It's blowing and raining out there right now. Nothing to awful bad though. The worrisome thing is the latest forecast track done by a local TV station, (who remarkably over the years have done a better job than the hurricane center) have it coming back my way as a category 1 hurricane Thursday morning. Still just nothing more than a pain in the ass though. We do have some flooding going on but that's normal for me here when it rains.  :banghead:

The freaking skeeters which have been horrendous so far this year are going to love all this water. You know they are bad when there's a bunch in the house with you.  :thatsright:

Fay Surprises Over Land

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Fay surprised forecasters and intensified as it moved over land and through Central Florida Tuesday.

"(The system) has had a weird run," Local 6 meteorologist Tom Sorrells said. "Since (morning) it has actually intensified."

Fay's winds jumped from maximum sustained gusts of 60 mph to 65 mph during a time it was expected to weaken.

"The worst thing that can happen is that people forget about Fay and deal with the rain showers as they happen and say the weekend is coming," Local 6 meteorologist Eric Wilson said.

For 3 days, the weather prognosticators have said it would end up in the Tn Valley area.

Tonight....they said it's doubtful we will get any rain from it..... :(

I don't think they really know what it's going to do except flood the heck out of FL!

It's doing a great job of it too. We are in the middle of a "historical rain event" AKA alot of ****ing water is getting dumped on our heads 24/7 going on three straight days now.  ::) It's freaking miserable out there. The ditches have reached capacity and we have some big damn deep ditches here. Now the roads are filling up. The Weather services advice? Turn Around, Don't Drown. catchy huh?  :banghead:

I noticed yesterday that some of our trees and bushes have leaves that are turning color, and the leaves are really starting to drop. I know we haven't had rain in at least 2-3 weeks.

This morning's local weather report said it would be Monday or Tuesday before we "might" get any rain.....temps are in the low to mid 90's and air quality sucks.

Heard that some places in FL may get up to 30 INCHES MORE!!!!! :o

My daughter was sent home from work today so the workers could prepare for the storm in Pensacola. She was told to expect as much as 16 inches of rain. I was there last October and ended up in the middle of a fierce storm. Tornadoes struck a block away from my hotel and tore up the shopping center next door to the hotel. Buckets of water poured down in seconds. scary...
