Handful of Looters Arrested in Houston During Harvey As Fake Reports Spread
http://heavy.com/news/2017/08/houston-looters-arrests-harvey-loot-crew-fake/
While there have been only a few arrests of looters in Houston after Hurricane Harvey hit, fake reports have spread online with the hashtags #HoustonLootCrew and #HarveyLootCrew. Past natural disasters and other events have also led to the spread of fake looting reports.
Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo told ABC News Monday morning that they are working to help people who need to be rescued from the catastrophic floods caused by Harvey. Police will also protect the city from looters as the floodwater recedes.
“We’ve already arrested a handful of looters. We’ve made it real clear to our community we’re going to do whatever it takes to protect their homes and their businesses,” Acevedo told ABC News. “And when people come from the outside to Houston, Texas, know we’re going to be out in the city, we’re not going to rest as a police department or law enforcement community until people restore their lives.”
Despite real reports of minimal looting, fake reports have spread on Twitter. For example, Breaking911 tweeted what it claimed was a video from Houston showing “Widespread looting reported in Houston as police are trying to save lives.” The tweet was retweeted over 1,400 times. The hashtags #HarveyLootCrew and #HoustonLootCrew also gained traction.
Despite the attempts to get #HoustonLootCrew and #HarveyLootCrew to trend nationally, it is #HoustonStrong that has remained on Twitter to show the strength and resiliency of the city’s residents.

"Minimal looting" has kind of a "mostly peaceful" vibe.
There probably would be more arrests if the cops didn't have their hands full helping to rescue people in life or death situations.
Good thing that the looters are only taking what they need to survive--essentials like big screen TV sets.

Members of the Cajun Navy have reported being shot at by looters overnight.

To almost quote Blazing Saddles "Where da white people at?"

OK, the population of Houston is about 2,300,000. If just .01% looted, that would be "minimal", but would still be 230 looters. Multiply that by $5000-$10000 apiece, and the losses are $50M-$100M. Sadly, my number of looters and the $$ value stolen are both probably rather low.

They should be shot on sight, get a few of them and word will spread rapidly that it is not a good idea to do it.

That's not who I'd be trying to piss off: people who were passed over for the cast of Swamp People

There is a strong correlation between supporting Antifa and being sympathetic to looters. I wonder* if it's the racial component?
*Just kidding, I don't wonder about this at all

And hang their carcass from something still standing with a sign that depicts a guy carrying a flat screen TV getting shot. :cheersmate:

When I first read about that I was thinking the same thing. Not a group of people that I would want to piss off. Those good ole guys and gals don't forget shit like that. Not to mention they probably damned good shots so if they decide to return fire one's life expectancy just went to damn near zero.

Edited to add:
Seems the Houston PD arrested 14 of these non existent looters. Seems the Texas cops don't put up with that shit. Per the article there are expanded penalties for that.

Houston police catch 14 armed robbers and looters amid flood emergency

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) --
Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said he is not going to tolerate criminals taking advantage of people in the community during such a devastating time.
He said his officers arrested 14 alleged looters since Sunday.
Those arrested will face stiffer punishments under a Texas law providing heftier penalties during a crisis, prosecutors announced Tuesday.
Looks like the dindonuffins gonna spend some extended time in the Texas gray bar hotel.

Lots of justification for stealing according to the twitter responses. The twitter responses cited in the article is what is wrong with this country.
