I just want to kill myself.
My life is a mess. I (actually, my dad was, for me) served a summons today for a credit card from six years ago that I haven't paid. It was a credit card with an $800 credit limit, and now I supposedly owe $2,300 because of interest and late fees. I make $7.70/hr. I can't afford to pay anything. They'll end up garnishing my wages. So then I won't be able to pay other bills.
Not only that, I'm 26 years old, living in my parent's basement. I went to college for 4 1/2 years, never got my degree, and I can't afford to go back. I can't do better than a retail job.
This depression is getting harder to deal with every day. My life isn't even worth living anymore. People always say it'll get better. It hasn't gotten any better. It's only been getting worse. I think the only way it'll get better is when I end it. I'll be free from the pain, the agony, the anxiety. I don't want to deal with this shit anymore.
Don't feel sorry for me.

6. 26 is young. So many people don't hit their stride until later.
I was 25 when I got my first salaried job, and that was just pure dumb luck.
People are living with their parents for much longer these days. It's not a sign of you not being capable...it's just that you're not there yet.
My brother never finished his degree. He's had great jobs as a flight attendant and a mortgage broker. I've had other friends with great careers who never got their degree until they hit their late 30s.
You're ok. Don't beat yourself up. You'll be able to make it. I promise.

9. Bet you could try and beat that lawsuit.
C'mon, you can and you will do better. Until then, please talk to someone.

14. I am familiar with the feeling and acted on it. One forgets when being pounded by the demands of modern life, how glorious it is just to sit on the beach. Don't do anything other than look for help. Killing yourself because you are financially dysfunctional makes no sense. PM me if you ever need to talk, because I've been there, done the counseling, done the meds, and struggle still with the unbelievably shitty deal that is my current life. I don't feel sorry for you but I do care.
This bonfire just got underway on Skins's island; it's bound to flame up, unless I killed it by posting it here.
Excresence happens. One accepts, adapts, and moves on.

You CAN'T do any better?! You CAN NOT do any better?!! Because you don't have a ****in' degree?!!! Give me a break!!!!!!!
When I was 26 I was making over $30.00/hour as a WELDER! You know how much college I had for that job?
I'm a real estate agent now and have been for almost 9 years. I make WAY more than $7.70/hour, as a matter of fact I make quite a bit more than I did as a welder ..... you know how much college I have for this job?!
This kind of self serving crap pisses me off so bad. You want to earn money get a friggin job.

10-1 that the DUmmies daddy bails its sorry ass out of this one.
Just like the dozens of times before.

If he's living in his parents' basement, what kind of bills exactly is he paying for? I doubt he's contributing to rent, utilities or food.
-
Make no payments on a CC over 6 years and see where it gets you dopey. What is more I suspect that you'd maxed it out before "forgetting" to pay for 6 YEARS.
You dropped out of college, after wasting 4 1/2 years there, and are you now pretty much DEFINE the DUmmie financial model.
Clearly you were not a business or science major, I'd suspect something like "Dance Appreciation" would be closer to the truth, yet you even managed to **** that up. Bravo.
Now, living in your parents basement at 26, shitty job, and clearly the wrong attitude to ever redeem yourself, you complain that you won't have enough money to cover your bills after the CC company collects on your ass. Congratulations.
You FAIL.
Just thank whatever higher power you believe in that your parents are good enough to put up with you, 'cause I sure as heck wouldn't.

Most plumbers are begging for assistants. A trained plumber makes a ton of money. It amazes me that people don't think outside of "woe is me".

Funny, that would seem to be the only reason you posted the thing.
First off you have to take control of things.
That means look for a better job and to be honest there are lots that pay more then 7.70 an hour because I have spent time looking lately.
If there aren`t any right there then guess what, you may have to look elsewhere whether you like it or not because you see that is a funny thing about life,it doesn`t owe us everything we wish for.
If the story about the card is true and something tells me they would have dumped it on a collection agency long before 6 years went by then there are credit repair services available.
Find one.
I doubt you will because...well you just seem like a whiny ass that wants pity and a free ride.
Your little screed proves that.

Ok, I have been really low, but this guy has his parents to help him out(he lives with them) and he can't make it? Buddy, I had NOBODY to fall back on in my early 20's and it motivated me. I got my job with a brokerage firm and 23 years of age and obtained all my licenses. By 26 I was married and living in a beautiful home in Arizona. I did not have my degree then and 15 years later I'm about to get my first degree. I had a horrible go of it starting from a teen on, but I trudged through. I was all I had so I had to keep it together. You have your parents and you want to lose it? :whatever: Seek help, buddy, really..if you are serious, seek help. You aren't the only one who has been there, but you have to understand your situation compared to others is not that bad. Get a second job, just part time. Call the credit card company NOW and work out something with them and start paying from the second job. It will be over before you know it and you'll be debt free. Also look for a better job. Try for employment in things you never thought you would be a fit for..just take chances..that's how I landed where I did. Once you get a better job, they might have tuition assistance and you'll be able to go back and finish school. Most of all...WORK HARD...you never know what opportunities may come your way in the place of employment you do pick up. Also, at 26 and with retail experience, nothing is stopping you from going into management--you don't need a degree to move up in a place initially. With no kids, I'm assuming, you have the time to give to a job like that and you'll make substantially more money then just customer service.
Another success story of someone who degreed later in life is my dad. He worked for many years supporting his family in avionics. Finished his Bachelors first at about my age now(38) and went on to finish his Master's about 3 years later. He went on to teach at college level and work in a sensitive area in gov in this original field of speciality. He's done just fine, very well in fact and wasn't doing too shabby when we were kids either without the degree.

What you see here is the difference between conservatives and many liberals in our approach to life. Liberals won't take any job they feel is "beneath them", in this case I would lay money the primitives parents made him get a job. Liberals seem to view any job that is hard or dirty or dangerous as below them.
Conservatives want to work. Whatever it is, if it pays the bills we'll do it, and do the best we can at it. Hell, I've done lawncare, cutdown trees, cleared land, dug trenches, installed sprinkler systems, hung drywall, roofed houses, and worked on cars when I needed money. All of it being to varying degrees dirty, dangerous, and hard. I'll bet most conservatives are pretty close to the same.

It's been my observation that, having been in a field where there were a lot of highly educated people (when I used to work in a lab), that as knowledge trickles in one ear, something else floods out the other ear, at a velocity that most big-city fire departments would be proud to have in their fire hoses. That thing is common sense. Common sense is the least common commodity in the world.

I call bullshit. It took 6 years of non payment before the CC company took any action? I don't think so. :whatever:
I dunno, considering it started as an under-$1000 debt, it probably got discounted off several times and set to a low priority due to the amount, on top of that the loser seems to have had no address or phone number of his own for a good while...plus he probably blew off any letters from the collectors over the years and is omitting that detail, so ultimately whoever is holding it now had to either sue him or let go of it due to statute of limitations issues (six years being it for most consumer debt).
And twenty-six is plenty young enough to enlist! :evillaugh: Great way to be able to finish that degree and have a steady job for three or four years, even learn a trade if you want instead of doing the much-more-fun combat arms stuff.
-
I call bullshit. It took 6 years of non payment before the CC company took any action? I don't think so. :whatever:
There is more to the story. First of all, this idiot is not being sued by an issuer. He's probablt being sued by someone who bought the debt. There are few buyers that will pursue litigation if the debt is that old, and in fact in many states the statute of limitations for suit would have expired...
UNLESS
the guy made a payment at some point, which would have started the statute clock all over again.
IN ANY CASE
SOMEONE tried to collect on the debt in the last 6 years. Anyone who can't deal with an $800 debt over a period of six years NEEDS to be sued in order to recover the amount owed, plus interest. If the idiot is 26, they were no younger than 19 when the debt was incurred. Care to guess what the idiot DID have $800 for in the interim? I'm sure there were plenty of things.
I have no complaint with anyone who, at age 26, does not want to work at a job that pays more than $8 an hour. However, the price of that freedom is, among other things, NO CREDITWORTHINESS. Also, I am inclined to discount 100% the political opinions of a person who still lives with their mommy and daddy, as much of politics has to do with the allocation of (my) scarce financial resources, for which I work.
I don't think the dummy should kill itself, but it should run along and do things most other children do: wait for the ice cream truck, play videogames, watch TV, and so forth. Idiot.

Many (most?) Conservatives have college degrees (I do). The difference is we get degrees in Finance, Medicine, Science, etc. -- things that will lead to well-paying and satisfying jobs. DUmmies go after degrees in Womyn's Studies, Cinema Appreciation, etc. -- things that will lead to nothing but a couch in Mommy's basement and em[ty-pocketed smugness.
-
Yes, you guys are right. This is probably a zombie debt that was bought for pennies on the dollar. It was probably written off years ago. And I'm sure the DUmmie was hounded with calls and letters by the card issuer and he chose to ingore them. You don't all of sudden get hounded for a six year old debt. He's leaving out the part about getting calls and letters over and over starting when he missed the first payment. He probably thought this would go away.

College wasn`t an option 26 years ago the reasons for which I won`t go into because..
A..It is pointless
and
B..Nobody does or should care
Hindsight being perfect, should have tried to make it an option in the years that have followed but I didn`t and there is a price to pay for it,I accept that.
It still doesn`t mean life is hopeless, just in some ways one has to be more careful is all.
Regardless..imho 4 years of higher education with absolutely nothing to show for it means the person is a loser and probably always will be.
-
I think they have seven years to collect.
It is definitely a fly-by-night collection agency who bought the debt, the original issuer wrote the DUmmy off 5 years ago.
And if it's a fly-by-night collection agency, this is not the first the DUmmy has heard from them. He's gotten countless nasty letters and phone calls, and chose to "just not deal with it".
*cracks knuckles*
Time for a little edjumacation.
Most of the companies who buy debt at pennies on the dollar are not "fly by night," and they generally do not collect on "zombie" debt. There are several examples of publicly traded debt buyers, who are subject to almost as much regulation as are lenders, including being looked over by financial auditors. The FTC oversees adherence to FDCPA, FCRA, and an array of state-level laws and regulations.
The statute of limitation for the purpose of legal action depends on the state, and ranges from 48 months post-chargeoff to more than 7 years. Not all accounts are economic to sue - in many cases there are no assets, or the balance is too small to justify court costs. Owners of debt incur court costs of litigation up front, and are in no way guaranteed to recover those costs. As a result, debt buyers are somewhat selective in the accounts they sue (spare me the one-off stories, please...they TEND to be selective).
In most cases, the debtor does not even appear in court, at which point a judgment is typically awarded to the plaintiff. In some cases, it is possible to garnish wages or attach bank accounts. It depends on the state and the court, and does not always apply. Many, many judgments are "nonperforming," which means that the debt owner won the suit but is not collecting any money.
Keep in mind that people who buy debt at pennies on the dollar are also collecting at pennies on the dollar. They offer large discounts (again, spare me your special cases), and only a small percentage of people who owe money actually pay.
"Zombie" debt is NOT "any debt that has been charged off." Zombie debt is OUT OF STATUTE DEBT , which means that it is too old to be reported to credit bureaus, and is too old to be sued. Anyone who pays on zombie debt is paying out of the goodness of their hearts. Anyone who claims they've been sued for zombie debt is (a) lying, or (b) about to have the case tossed out of court by an irate judge, who WILL sanction the lawyer who brings an ineligible suit. People who have collections horror stories and claim that the debt is out of statute are LYING. If a collector calls on out-of-statute debt and you don't want to pay it, here is what you do: TELL THEM TO PLEASE STOP CALLING YOU. It's just that simple. If they keep calling you, and especially if they make threats, then decide where in your home you would like your new 50" LCD TV and call a lawyer.
If the debt is within statute, and you don't like being called, then BE RESPONSIBLE AND MAKE A FREAKING PAYMENT.
That is all.

I call them "fly-by-night" as a derogatory term for them.
I had a run-in with some recently. They sent me letters demanding a payment. They had the wrong guy, names the same, different SSN's, and it sure wasn't me they were after. I called a lawyer, he did some research into the debt they were trying to collect, it was 18 years old.
That happens. Here's HOW it happens: most debtor data is dealt with at the batch level, on production platforms, with automated processes. When a third party verifies information, or updates it, it can come back confused or just plain wrong, usually because of the matching logic employed. The agencies who are truly fly by night are the ones who won't deal with their mistakes immediately. Those are worth money, too, if you want to retain a lawyer and rattle your saber.

We have no idea what the real story is regarding the DUmmie and his $800 CC debt. Anything is possible. Up to and incuding him being a liar. He did admit it was a valid debt. I pointed out that had he been a little consumer-savvy, he could have avoided all of this by following the law in the fair debt collection practices.
There are unscrupulous debt collectors out there who do break the law. Ask my brother. He had a zombie debt collector come after him and he won a lawsuit against them because they applied the debt to everyone with his name (which is common) hoping for a nibble. Lots of people are getting scammed by scummy debt collectors who knowingly break the law, not have clerical mistakes or are just careless.

That cuts to the heart of the story and my initial skepticism of it.
It is a lie period, end of discussion and only thrown out on the island because the poster knew that no one there would be smart enough to pick up on it.
The whole thing is likely a fabrication by someone that is not emotionally or mentally mature.
Kind of typical for DUmmies really.

Regarding "Zombie debt," note that the so-called Statute of Limitations (which is different for different types of actions, and differs somewhat from state to state), is an "Affirmative defense," which means the Judge is not obliged to raise it on his own as an issue, the burden to raise the issue is legally on the party that would want to assert it (i.e the Defendant). Not that a Judge WON'T raise on his own, and then bitch out the Plaintiff for trashing up his docket, but he is not obliged to even mention it.

Depends on the state. For example, in Wisconsin, when debt goes out of statute, it ceases to exist altogether.

If you say so. WI would be quite an outlier if so.

The guy lives with his parents, how many bills could he have? I'd think he could find a way to at least squeeze an extra $10.00 a week. We've had a few tight spots over the years and I've yet to find a mortgage company, credit card issuer, even the phone company who wasn't willing to work with us.
Degree or no degree no one starts at the top. Retail provides many opportunities for advancement. Heck, hardworking 17 year olds and Jack in the Box can become shift supervisors, working part time and going to high school. This is just a pity party.

Hell the DUmmie is young enough, he should try the military.
I took what learned in 4 years active AF and turn it into a 21 year career
with some really good bennies.
He might learn some self-discipline at the same time.

Exactly, all I have is a high school diploma and have done infinitely better then this person with 4 years of college.
Life is what you make of it and we all have down moments,we all feel sorry for ourselves now and then,it is called being human.
Conservatives go through it and go beyond all the while learning lifes lessons.
DUmmies just whine.
Looking at the demographics regarding education levels in this country, it is unlikely that most conservatives or liberals have degrees. Though it seems that more conservatives have at least some college or educated skill set.

Vag, I've got a BS in Bio, and my wife has a BS in Art History and a MS in Psychology. I figure that our daughter will be able to solve the time-space compendium for the VRWC.

My wife has a MA in public management.
Me, I learned electronics on my own, then learned RF Communications, satellite communications, and satellite bandwidth power management from the Army. I never stop reading, and I've earned a few accreditations now for networking and network management. I'm still taking college classes, so I eventually will have a degree in something, probably engineering, though I will never use it since I'm already doing management.
I looked it up and the best number I can come up with is 73 % of the US population does not have a post secondary degree. This, of course, does not count specialized training that does not require a degree, which is what most skill sets fall into.

I (actually, my dad was, for me) served a summons today for a credit card from six years ago that I haven't paid. It was a credit card with an $800 credit limit, and now I supposedly owe $2,300 because of interest and late fees.
Bullshit!
Most CC companies don't came after you for that amount... they just write it off.

As DUmmy, guns are probably verboten. Here is some useful advice:
