Hiroshima -the first place on Earth where nuclear weapons were used in warfare 72 years ago today

Some 140,000 people were killed in 1945 atomic bomb, with another 74,000 bombed to death three days later in Nagasaki.
Japan marked 72 years since the world's first nuclear attack on Hiroshima on Sunday, with the nation's traditional contradictions over atomic weapons again coming into focus.
The anniversary came after Japan sided last month with nuclear powers Britain, France and the US to dismiss a UN treaty banning atomic weapons, which was rejected by critics for ignoring the reality of security threats such as North Korea.
Japan is the only country to have suffered atomic attacks, in 1945.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, speaking at the annual ceremony at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park near the ground zero, said Japan hoped to push for a world without nuclear weapons in a way that all countries can agree.

Destroy all nukes.
August 6 is usually one of the High Holy days on DU. I'm disappointed. (https://www.democraticunderground.com/10029422385)
This is usually one of the prime days for the DUmmies to build street cred by whining that the Japanese didn't have it coming. Oh, don't you fret: they always seem to leave out that
the internment camps and the nukes were the product of DEMOCRAT administrations.
Oh well - Nagasaki is coming. I suggest you guys step it up.

The US Navy, Marines, and Army being able to defeat Japan on a shoestring was a large part of the reason mal isn't wurst or borscht. And Hiroshima and Nagasaki are large parts of why Japan surrendered before hundreds of thousands of Allied military personnel - active and POW - and more hundreds of thousands of Japanese military personnel and civilians were killed.
Hiroshima and Nagasaki were horrible because war is horrible. A person who died at Hiroshima isn't any more dead than a person who died during the bombing of another Japanese city, using conventional bombs. But to the degree Hiroshima and Nagasaki were last-straw shocks, those bombs saved far more people than they killed - lesser horrors that prevented far worse horrors.
Not that facts matter to mal there in her nice, safe gated compound or community in the midst of Jamaican poverty and crime.

Exactly.
An important fact to consider is that at the time, we had just finished winning the incredibly long and bloody battles at Iwo Jima. Japanese soldiers had been taught to never surrender under any circumstances, and to take as many enemy soldiers down with them as possible. Because of those facts, taking Iwo Jima took a really long time and cost a hell of a lot of lives on both sides. Our military leaders were smart enough to realize from this that attempting a traditional land assault on Japan in the same way would be like Iwo Jima times a hundred, with the added problem of civilians getting caught in the crossfire.
Japan needed a serious blow/ show of force to demoralize them enough to make them surrender, which sadly necessitated the Big Ones. Even then, though, we gave them as much warning as we could, including dropping leaflets on Japanese cities warning them of what was coming, but their leaders were still too proud to surrender.

All I can say is **** em, they started it.
They butchered people where ever they went and were merciless. so they got payback.

Very strange how DUmmies have selective memory. On one hand, they despise Truman for authorizing the bombing (and FDR for letting it be developed). And some recent thread was praising Truman to the hilt, for a different reason altogether.

It's OK to nuke people and be a racist.
All will be forgiven or overlooked so long as you hate Republicans.
Because Republicans are supposed to be warmongering racists...or something.

Perhaps Mal and her ilk should remember this timely bit of advice....
"Don't start none, won't be none"
They (Japanese) started something they could not finish, cry me a river Dummies :bird:

It was merciful and a kindness compared to what was going to happen to them if we had to do it the hard way. And much-deserved, if you have any knowledge about the totally-pervasive scope of Japanese crimes against any non-Japanese who fell into their hands. The Einsatzkommandos had NOTHING on those f@ckers.

E.G. Frank James, who survived the Bataan Death March and Unit 731. (http://www.constantinereport.com/mukden-files-pows-claim-germ-warfare-coverup-u-s-san-jose-mercury-news-aug-13-1995/) His parents' home displayed 3 blue stars and 1 gold star; their gold star, unexpectedly, came back alive.

I would have waited until we had seven of the things, and would have dropped one per day until the ****ers came crying for mercy. On the seventh day I'd have said, 'Next one is over Tokyo. Your choice: give up yet?'

Is that where the Emperor's palace was located? That would have been my next announced target. Kill their god.

IIRC they didn't have another one immediately available in the pipeline after Nagasaki. It would've taken a good bit of time to finish and deliver a fourth A-bomb (The first being the Trinity test, the second and third being the ones actually dropped on Japan).

I believe you are correct, but you know politicians and exaggeration, :-) .

The DUmmies should read (if they can read) "Killing the Rising Sun". The precious Japanese "innocents" they love to bark about were probably the most racist SOB's on the planet.
The above pic perfectly illustrates the contempt they had for ANY peoples that were not of the Rising Sun. There was no torture, humiliation, or disgusting treatment that was not used.

Pr
"Knights of Bushido" although written many years ago is a more direct compendium of Japanese atrocities throughout the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere, and even it left a lot out. While stuff like Unit 731 was largely unknown when it was written, it was also unknown to all but a very inner circle of the Japanese War Ministry, their widespread outrages against prisoners, civilians, the shipwrecked, and in the later stages even their own population were known, condoned, and even promoted widely by their forces in the field.

And here I thought that the NAZI's were brutal. :(

And here I thought that the NAZI's were brutal. :(
Stuff that was considered extreme or excessive by the Waffen SS front-line combat units was commonplace in the Imperial Japanese Army line units. The very worst of the SS, like the Einsatzgruppen, was about on a par with the average Japanese line unit. Even the scummiest of the SS never stooped so far as cannibalism of downed enemy fliers, or ordering the killing all the infants of their own civilian population to ensure there was enough food for the troops when they were cut off.

It's indeed fortunate that the two were used, thus revealing their true nature. IOW, you have to drop one to see what's in it.
Had we not, I believe temptation would eventually lead to someone lighting one off. This would be catastrophic as advances in design and yield has gone through the roof. The W80 warhead for cruise missiles weighs only 290 pounds and packs 200Kt of bang.
Another good example would be the W54 for the Davy Crockett battlefield weapon. It weighs around 55 pounds with a yield of 20 tons. Darn thing is almost cute.
For your browsing pleasure.

Wait! Wait! Let's give this a chance. I know the perfect test case. Promise Raul that the RN, USN, and USAF won't defend Jamaica anymore. Cuba is just 100 miles away, maybe Raul will bring his Paradise to Jamaica!

Japan was very brutal in Asia. It is no wonder why they got nuked. It was better for everyone in the end. Japan surrendered.

Personally I think the US needs to drop a couple three nukes on a couple of selected countries. Then tell the world we ain't putting up with third world bullshit anymore. Live in peace or die in fire. Play ball with us or get the bat stuck up your ass. Don't matter to us.
They gonna attack us with nukes sooner or later so we might as well get all the shit done while we on top.
