Beggars can't be sitters on Santa Monica's benches

The city is about to pass a law keeping panhandlers and other solicitors on their feet in the promenade area.

Santa Monica has a message for panhandlers on the Third Street Promenade: Stand up, please.
If you're going to ask for cheeseburgers or spare change -- or sell cookies (and you know who you are) -- don't do it while resting on one of the public chairs or benches.
That goes for you, Mr. Greenpeace Advocate. And you too, little Miss Girl Scout.
Having restricted, to some degree, where homeless people can eat and sleep, Santa Monica is zeroing in on panhandlers.
The City Council voted unanimously last month to prohibit solicitation by anyone sitting on public chairs or benches on the Third Street Promenade and the so-called transit mall along two neighboring streets, Broadway and Santa Monica Boulevard. The ordinance, which must be approved on a second reading, expected next month, does not seek to ban panhandling or solicitation outright but rather to free up limited public seating.
There then follows one of the most breathtakingly stupid posts I have ever seen on DU

2. Their goal is to have them stand. Wasn't standing for long periods a technique of interrogation used

Santa Monica's goal is to persuade them to go somewhere else to bother people. They don't have to stand for long periods of time, they can go somewhere else and sit. maybe the rail road tracks. Oops, I am a liberal, i should have more compassion. Sorry for being so mean spirited. :rotf:

How did I know it was going to be a Mel Brooks movie? :-)

I wonder how many Democrats are on the Santa Monica City Council?
-
If The Gang Bangers chase the Pan handlers outta Venice then Culver City is the last Resort ! (There they can visit the Snake Handlers church)

They passed a similar "no loitering" law in Tempe several years ago. All of the homeless there would stand in front of the businesses and panhandle. It was driving customers away. People don't like being accosted in front of every store. Imagine that.
-
For Gawd's sake don't offer them a drink from the garden hose or the DUmmies will be apoplectic.
-
Wow, sound like shades of Gitmo. Seriously, the New Orleans police force does not need an ordinance to roust panhandlers sitting or laying on park benches. They tell them to move and if they don't, they get wacked with a night stick.
-
Torture would be breaking bones in their feet and then making them stand. Torture would be being forced to socialize with someone who posts on DemocratUnderground.com.

Having compassion for normal everyday people trying to live their lives unmolested by bums is nothing to be ashamed about. Non-bums are people too. They deserve your concern.

What else makes sense where DUmmy hyperventilation is concerned?

Sounds like an elegant solution to the problem of useless bums keeping the people for whom the benches were built from being able to use them. Well-played, Santa Monica!
