A Teen Whaler in the Age of Cyberbullies

Before his story made the Anchorage paper, before the first death threat arrived from across the world, before his elders began to worry and his mother cried over the things she read on Facebook, Chris Apassingok, age 16, caught a whale.
It happened at the end of April, which for generations has been whaling season in the Siberian Yupik village of Gambell on St. Lawrence Island on the northwest edge of Alaska. More than 30 crews from the community of 700 were trawling the sea for bowhead whales, cetaceans that can grow over 15 meters long, weigh over 45 tonnes and live more than 100 years. A few animals taken each year bring thousands of kilograms of meat to the village, offsetting the impossibly high cost of imported store-bought food.
A hundred years ago—even 20 years ago, when Gambell was an isolated point on the map, protected part of the year by a wall of sea ice—catching the whale would have been a dream accomplishment for a teenage hunter, a sign of Chris’s passage into adulthood and a story that people would tell until he was old. But today, in a world shrunk by social media, where fragments of stories travel like light and there is no protection from anonymous outrage, his achievement has been eclipsed by an endless wave of online harassment. Six weeks after his epic hunt, his mood was dark. He’d quit going to school. His parents, his siblings, everybody worried about him.
Animal rights people are very vile and hateful people. They are some of the most closed minded I have come across.
They are terrorists and no different from Al-Qaeda, ISIS, Boko Haram, Al-Shabaab, etc.

This is an example of Prod identity and enviro politics coming into conflict, though I doubt it will redound much on the D Party.
On one hand, the boy is a member of an indigenous people group, who have an internationally recognized right to hunt whales for food.
On the other hand, the shave-the-whales enviro-mob use whales as a high-grade enviro-sacred-symbol. So they don't much care about the ethnic heritage of humans or their internationally recognized rights.

Eco- freaks like these are indeed the cruelest and most hateful people you'll meet outside of Jihadists.
Many of them are indeed terrorists, bent on imposing their psychotic worldview on all around them, and will stoop to any depth, including violence and murder, to achieve that.
Their crimes are not reported more often because the liberal media sympathizes with them. It's why Hollywood movies are much more likely to have an evil corporate boogeyman type as a villain than an ecoterrorist villain.

Don't forget, the island where the boy lives is technically a part of Alaska, and ever since Sarah Palin first came into national attention in summer of 2008, ultra- liberals have rabidly hated anything having to do with that state.

We need some sort of liberal rating system -- like the NFL QB system.
Like in this case we have Whale(++) which outscores Indigenous Person(+) from Alaska(-).
One would think Rich Conservative Straight Christian White Male would be the lowest on the list. But if you have a Black Conservative Gay, for example, that is MUCH WORSE and lower in the list than the RCSCWM.
Maybe I will spend some time on the model, using the NFL QB rating as a template. I don't have the math (this might take someone like John Nash, I don't know yet), but it would be worthwhile.
