9. Yes, I'm a grammar geek, but I need to point out

Melanie's tweet says she hopes "everyone stay safe" as opposed to "stays". She does not have good command of the English language.

Sorry, not ragging on your post, but I don't want her given credit when she does not deserve it. I still remember the cringe I felt when she eviscersted the Lord's Prayer.

Just wanted to save this until someone smarter than the 'grammar geek' points it out and it gets changed.

"Everyone stay safe" can, of course, be understood as a command, in which case there is no error, except for the moron who thinks it is erroneous!

The irony in the Dem's comments is just too good!  "Melania" and "eviscerated" would be present, if the writer really were a "grammar geek"...instead of a pathetic goon.  :-)

How pathetic is this whole situation that the Germans would let a massive mob of trouble makers riot and destroy a city during an international meeting.
 :argh: :argh: :argh:

hamsterjill, you may be a grammer geek ,but you are a spelling failure.

Depending on the context and number of characters in Melania's tweet, hamstergerbil's criticism may be off-base, or Melania may have deleted the "s" to stay within Twitter's character-count limit.

Not that facts mean anything on DU.

When citing direct quotations they need to start with a capital letter, DUmbass.  Unless of course it's an incomplete quote, in which case different rules apply.

I guess what I'm trying to say here is that you're an idiot.

Try again.

23. Yeah, and WHAT happened to her campaign against bullying?

You are kinder than I am. I've never had an ounce of sympathy for her.

It was rather telling when she defending him over the mika thing, wasn't it???!!!

In my opinion, she would have to be as heartless as Cheeto is to be able to stand to be married to him. I don't think she's a particularly doting mother, either, because I think the son was born to cement her financial security.

Now, I'm no gramerian.  ;-), but isn't that word 'mika' a person?  I don't know for sure, but I'm thinking I've seen something mentioned with that word and it was a person.

Also, the comma after mother seems to not belong, but like I said, I'm not good at the Engrish.  I'm more mathy.

Now, I'm just a regular old person, but doesn't Melania speak 5 languages? How many does this DUmmy speak?

Well, probably just one, and as several have pointedly pointed out, not impeccably well.

Worse, the proposed "correction" of "everyone stays safe" is a sentence fragment of post-event fact.  It is grammatically incorrect, whereas "Everyone stay safe" is a complete sentence and a directive.  "Everyone stays safe" does not mean the same thing as "Everyone stay safe."

IOW the self-styled "grammar geek" doesn't know shit about grammar.

Also, Melania was not born in the USA and should not be held to the same standard as the standard that SHOULD have been applied to the completely illiterate first wookie of the last 8 years.

Final note: Melania Trump speaks 5 languages -- FLUENTLY.  You, dummy, can't even speak one.

Hamsterjill.    Melania is Hawt!   She can say and do anything she wants, because she's is.  You on the other hand probably need a good shave and a bath.

Aren't these the same people who are deeply offended when a conservative says English should be our national language?  Are they all running around trashing immigrants?

Just a thought.

Whether it's President Trump, his lovely wife Melania, or one of the Trump kids, it doesn't matter, leftists automatically attack any kind of Trump statement or action.

Every leftist does this--from Cankles to CNN cub reporter Jimmy Acosta down to the lowly democrat underground shitgibbon nobody hamsterjill.

It doesn't matter what was said, the leftists attack and end up looking like fools.

And they never seem to learn.

Like I posted on CU, if the Progs learned its name, the Progs would attack Trump's goldfish, because it belongs to Trump. And like you said, come up looking like fools.

Or "as usual". I don't think there's a fake news story they didn't believe whole-heartedly, and I don't think Lucy's offered a football yet after which they haven't run.

"It" in this case refers not to Mika herself, but the situation of the tweet-down that happened.  And she's actually correct with the commas around "either" because it's a set-off notation (in the publishing sense; in the technical grammar sense, it's a non-dependent clause).

That having been said, her own spelling and grammar errors in her own post are just damn funny.

Funnier still is that this whole whine is about a damned tweet, not some carefully-published college white paper.  Unsurprisingly, sometimes people make spelling errors and/or typos when tweeting.  Just ask covfefe.

What utter idiots.  The very same people who routinely are incapable of, for example, distinguishing between there, their, and they're, are actually trying to claim that this ridiculous example is proof that Melania Trump is stupid?  Holy crap.

Their ideological worldview cannot accommodate the reality that decent and intelligent people disagree with their political ideology. So they have to Hitlerize or denigrate the intelligence of people who disagree with them.

but it is possible that it should have read, "Everyone, stay safe." Totally different meaning, and quite correct.

34. "Enemy?"

1. If you mean Melania, she is not my enemy.

2. She is an immigrant, and English is not her first language. Willing to give her a break.

3. Suggesting a possible alternative meaning isn't defending her.

4. Just saw the tweet. I agree that my interpretation was wrong.

5. It looks like a typo, and I think only those who have NEVER made a typo are in a position to criticize.

6. Just sayin'.

35. She is very much the enemy.

She defended Trump's tirade against Mika. She also brags about being "fluent" in several languages.

Don't muddy the waters. That is why Democrats lose. She certainly is no friend to Democrats.

I still remember the cringe I felt when she eviscersted the Lord's Prayer.

Someone else aptly highlighted "hamstergerbil's" evisceration of the word "evisceration", but her reference to how Melania said the Lord's Prayer got me curious. I probably recited the Lord's prayer 50-60 times a year during my first 18 years of life (though infrequently in the charismatic and Baptist churches I've mostly attended since that time), so it is rather familiar. I found a video clip of her reading or recitation. She speaks English with an accent, but big whoop! Her accent aside, there was one grammatical error in her recitation of the version of the Lord's Prayer; she said, "As we forgive those who trespasses against us." That's quite trivial, probably less of an error/stumble than many/most people made this Sunday morning as they recited it.

A couple of trivia-grade notes. Melania was reading/reciting the translation of the Lord's Prayer from the older Anglican/Episcopalian Book of Common Prayer (which is/was also used by theologically conservative Lutherans). "hamstergerbil" using the term "Lord's Prayer" rather than "The Our Father" suggests that "hamstergerbil" may be (or havebeen) a Protestant rather than a Catholic; it's also possible that what "hamstergerbil" took as mistakes were actually differences between the BCP version of the Lord's Prayer and the KJV or modern translations of that Prayer - IOW, possibly a product of "hamstergerbil's" limited religious knowledge.
