A suggestion for when you get pulled over.
I'm not black, but I am a trucker, and being a trucker means that I have more experience with the police than most people do. And I've run across my share of cops who have an irrational hatred of truckers. It's probably not entirely comparable to the kind of harassment that black people have to put up with from the police (I haven't heard of as many truckers dying as a result of a traffic stop), but it might be close enough that I can relate in some regards.
The reason I have more experience with the police than most people is not because I'm less moral than most people. It's just a fact of the matter that if you drive 100,000 miles or more a year you are going to get pulled over more than people who drive ten times less than that. And because truckers are subject to many more laws than ordinary motorists, it makes them easier targets as well. Also, unlike most other motorists, a trucker can get pulled over at any time even if he or she is doing absolutely nothing wrong.
Here's something I've learned to do to help set my mind and the cop's mind at ease when I get pulled over. As soon as I get pulled over, I roll down the window and place my left arm in the opening and cross my left wrist with my right wrist. That way as the cop approaches me he can readily see both of my hands without even coming up to the window. I don't go for the glove compartment. I don't reach for my wallet. I don't move around. I just put my hands up there where the cop can see them. I only go for my license and registration and such when the cop asks me to. When the cop asks for those things, I move slowly and deliberately. I don't give cops a hard time even if they are being rude. I say very little and speak only when necessary, and I speak only when the cop speaks to me first. Forget dignity. Forget what's right. Your life could be on the line at this moment.

it's actually very good advice. I'm sure that the various law enforcement-types on the forum will agree. I've heard that the most stressful time for any LEO is when they're walking up to a vehicle that they have pulled over. It's in everyone's best interests to decrease the blood pressure of the LEO at that time, and the best way to do that is to show complete compliance to them at that time. It's always worked for me. :whistling:

:hi5: ! And there is serious reality behind your joke.
And I've run across my share of cops who have an irrational hatred of truckers.
If Tobers sees police more often because he's on the road more often, police, state troopers, and highway patrol officers see more truckers due to the same cause. Police, state troopers, and highway patrol officers see more truckers who are falling asleep, are driving ill-maintained, dangerous rigs, are over-loaded, are intoxicated, and who are driving like maniac morons. Maybe Tobers wouldn't drive more than the legal hours, maintains his brakes and tires, doesn't over-load, and doesn't drive drunk or like a @$$hole, but there are truckers "out there" who do, and it doesn't take a very high percentage of idiots and @$$holes to tarnish the image of all truckers.
BTW, it's probably been 5-10 years since I was last pulled over by a police officer (tail light burned out), and 20-25 years since I was last pulled over for something not equipment-related (driving solo in a carpool lane). At 14K or 16K miles a year, ya'll can do the Math; for DU-folk, that means I've driven 300K-400K miles without any sort of moving violation. Not earning tickets is not that hard!
-
Speaking from experience, many times the officers also face a barrage of attitude and abuse from the truck drivers they pull over. I have to listen every day as drivers thump their chest about how they "schooled that stupid cop." All this is going on while we are dealing with their citation or warning. Many times the officers will give the real tough cases just a warning. There is a reason for that. A driver gets a cite or a warning and they get CSA points on their license. Go to court and if the ticket is dismissed the points go away. Get a citation and the points just hang around like a DUmmy at the buffet. Officers love to screw the tough cases with lots of CSA points (they fall off after 3 years but it's a pain)

I am white but, since I drive a vehicle my experience makes me the same as black. I have been doing all those things since I drove the first time when I was 16. They are OBVIOUS! Only idiots DON'T do those things.
Which is why DU needs the reminder.

I was taught to get the window down before the cop exits his car, then place my hands at the top of the steering wheel with open hands like I was waving at someone.

Yep. I was always told not to look in the rear view mirror or the drivers side mirror. Something about if the cops sees you are not paying attention to where they are when they are walking up that tells them you are not looking to ambush them. Dunno if it is true or not... makes sense though.
Haven't got shot yet so maybe there is something to it. :lmao:

Tubs,
I too have some advice for you, and it deals with why you're probably getting pulled over in the first place.
Screaming "RAM RAM RAM RAM RAM RAM RAM RAM RAM RAM RAM RAM RAM RAM RAM RAM RAM RAM RAM RAM RAM RAM RAM" while clutching the steering wheel as tight as if it were your last meal is no way to drive down the interstate.

4. Any black person putting their hand out a window at a traffic stop
would have a cop conjure up an imaginary gun pointed at them, causing a "fear for life" response, and an automatic death sentence for the driver.
We were taught to just put both hands separate and visible on top of the steering wheel, and then sit and wait for instructions.

Sounds pretty much like what I was expecting, maybe a little kinder. FWIW, what BRDS said (s)he was taught is what this melanin-deprived male was taught, so long ago that I don't remember whether by my parents or in school.

Little Miracles.
If not the spiritual type, maybe you can think of it in Jungian psychological terms as synchronicity.
I've been reading a lot of Hindu and Buddhist stuff, lately. A lot of Ram Dass stuff in particular, but other people as well. I decided to take up a mantra. I've found that I'm not good at long mantras such as a long phrase or a couple of sentences. Ram Dass says his guru simply used Ram which is a Hindu name for God. I think Ram Dass uses it as well, but I'm not sure about that. I decided to use it. It's supposed to bring you into the moment and open up your heart. I'm here to tell you it works...at least it works for me. Ram Ram Ram Ram Ram Ram Ram Ram Ram Ram Ram Ram Ram Ram Ram Ram Ram Ram Ram Ram Ram Ram Ram
I've had it going through my head the last four days.
I'm a trucker and I was rolling down I-70 the other day in eastern Ohio just riding and guiding and doing my mantra. I was looking at the people in the other cars and trucks as they passed. My truck only does 66 mph so I get passed a lot. I had this mantra going through my head and it was kind of like a song. I was tapping my feet and singing along in my head in 4/4 time really getting into it Ram Ram Ram Ram. I looked down in a passing car and there was a young woman looking up at me, smiling, and clapping her hands along to the beat that I was keeping as if she could hear the mantra song that was singing in my head.
Coincidence? Maybe...maybe not.

Most of us that frequent the cave went to the Dan Rather School of Journalism.
What we post may be fake, but accurate.

The Po-lease have to be in stitches when they walk up, see his arm/hand
on the sill and he's bouncing around toning Ramramramramram.
Sounds like a sure fire way to get searched and drug tested.

And a :cheersmate: from me, too. I had forgotten that little humorous Tobers moment.
I hope fizzy read Tobers' post, and maybe printed it out for study. With her CO plates, she may use his advice in a couple of states near CO.

Stick a fork in him, Mildred, I think he's done!
With life-long Victimologists like those on DU, a person could give the wisest advice ever given and all the Victimologists would see is the color of the advice giver's skin. Though to be honest, a black person advising Victimologists to take responsibility for their actions will be denigrated as an Uncle Tom, House N@##$%, Oreo, or other similar epithet. But skin color is seen first.
How Tobers avoided seeing this before mystifies me. And if he imagines anything he said will be forgotten - let alone forgiven - he's delusional. He'd best stay clear of the AfAm forum for a year or three.

Since there is probably not a single black person in Tobin's circle except when he delivers to the inner city (I will give him this -- I do believe he is a long haul trucker and, unlike the rest of the DUmp, works for a living), it will be easy to blacksplain to his white on how blacks should act.
And I do love the burn he got.
