Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.) on Wednesday said reports that President Trump pressed ousted FBI Director James Comey to end an investigation would merit impeachment if true, becoming the first Republican lawmaker to broach the idea.
The New York Times on Tuesday reported that Trump tried to pressure Comey to stop investigating former national security adviser Michael Flynn, citing a memo written by Comey.
Asked by The Hill if the details in the memo would merit impeachment if they're true, Amash replied: "Yes."
Asked by another reporter whether he trusted Comey's word or Trump's, Amash said: "I think it's pretty clear I have more confidence in Director Comey."
Amash is one of only two House Republicans to cosponsor a Democratic bill to establish an independent commission to investigate Russia's role in the election. Rep. Walter Jones (R-N.C.) has also endorsed the legislation.

Ryan calls for 'close examination' of allegations Trump talked to Comey about Flynn
House Speaker Paul Ryan called for a "close examination" of allegations that President Trump tried to pressure ex-FBI chief James Comey to drop an investigation into ousted national security adviser Mike Flynn.
But Ryan said the GOP wants to gather information about the matter "before rushing to judgment" and suggested the attacks against Trump are at least partly politically motivated. "There are some people out there who want to harm the president," Ryan said.
Ryan, like other Republicans, questioned why Comey did not disclose the conversation with Trump before being forced out of his job.
Ryan met Wednesday morning with his rank-and-file members at Republican Party headquarters near the Capitol. He told lawmakers "now is the time to get the pertinent information" about the allegations against the president and said he supports a move by the House Oversight Committee to obtain Comey's memo about his private conversation with Trump regarding Flynn.
Ryan said he had no plans to micromanage or "armchair quarterback" the individual committee investigations who are probing alleged connections between the Trump campaign and Russian officials, as well as Trump's decision last week to fire Comey.
Reporters asked Ryan, as he left the podium, whether he still has full confidence in the increasingly embattled president and he responded, "I do."

Texas Congressman calls for Trump's impeachment on House floor
By Miranda Green, CNN
Updated 6:11 PM ET, Wed May 17, 2017
Democratic Rep. Al Green of Texas called for the impeachment of President Donald Trump Wednesday morning, the first member of Congress to officially request leveling charges against the President from the House floor.
"This is about my position. This is about what I believe. And this is where I stand. I will not be moved. The President must be impeached," Green said on the floor. "For those who do not know, impeachment does not mean that the President would be found guilty. It simply means that the House of Representatives will bring charges against the President. It's similar to an indictment but not quite the same thing."
