Title: Manny's primitives ain't gonna like this
Post by: franksolich on May 10, 2017, 05:24:53 PM

It's in reference to the mayoral race in Omaha, which the Republican won despite the blueness of that city.

Quote
Bernie Sanders campaigning for Heath Mello was 'a colossal mistake,' UNO professor says

.....The Omaha mayor’s race represented one of the first election tests nationally since Donald Trump’s surprising victory in the 2016 presidential election. Democrats had been hoping an anti-Trump backlash could aid Democrat Mello’s bid in the officially nonpartisan race. It’s likely one reason Democrats brought liberal firebrand Bernie Sanders to Omaha to campaign for Mello.

The effort may have backfired, said Paul Landow, a University of Nebraska at Omaha political science professor and longtime Omaha Democratic activist. While it may have enthused some core supporters in the Democratic fold, it did nothing to help Mello attract the more moderate voters he needed to win. Landow called the visit “a colossal mistake.”

“Why do you bring an ultraliberal into a moderate city to campaign for a moderate candidate for mayor?” Landow said. “Bernie Sanders is not going to do anything to expand your base.”

Yeah, gimme crowd.  What about this (last two sentences above)?

Kudos for urging the Democrat party to keep moving far left, nitwits.  Idiots.

This is the race that had DU's Uber-Prog-Purists up in arms. The D, Mello, is pro-Life. So on one hand, you had loon Bernie scaring sane voters, and on the other the Uber-Prog-Purists were clamoring for Ds - the party and, presumably, voters - to withhold support from Mello. From what I've seen, the outcome was close. DU's Uber-Prog-Purists may have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

As they say to runners in trail races, "Good job!"

The outcome was 53-47%; whether or not that's "close" is debatable.

Omaha is a blue city, remember.

Neither close nor a stomping, IMO. The R who won was the incumbent, so maybe she was a beneficiary of Obama's Inverse Midas Touch.

It depends, Obama won by that and it was a SHELLACKING. Repuplican wins by that and it is really a loss for the republican.

It is in the Fake News Media style guide. See also black/muslim/both committing a violent crime it is a "teen" or "youth."

At DU they're convinced it's because Mello is pro-life or something.

Well, DU-folk were attacking him for that, and urging the D base not to vote for him. If DU-folks' and other Progs' attacks were effective, they are correct to that degree. Whether he might have won had they all kept their yaps shut is an interesting question. Their "victory" will have effects well beyond Omaha having an R mayor for another term:

* The D party has made it clear to a young (age 37, IIRC) D pol - currently a legislator, IIRC - that he has no future in the D Party;

* The D party has made it clear to Pro-Life Catholics - Catholics having long been a significant part of the D base - that they are persona non grata in the D Party.

IOW, incidents like this will, with time and accumulation, erode both the core D vote and exclude many who should be the Ds' next generation of leaders.
