This month it looks like the Empire State will be scrapping the examination because not enough people were passing it and the failure rates were deemed to be too heavily skewed along racial lines. (Associated Press)
New York education officials are poised to scrap a test designed to measure the reading and writing skills of people trying to become teachers, in part because an outsized percentage of black and Hispanic candidates were failing it.
The state Board of Regents on Monday is expected Monday to adopt a task force’s recommendation of eliminating the literacy exam, known as the Academic Literacy Skills Test.
Backers of the test say eliminating it could put weak teachers in classrooms. Critics of the examination said it is redundant and a poor predictor of who will succeed as a teacher.
This is not something which just cropped up. A group representing many of these aspiring teachers brought lawsuits in 2015 claiming that both the ASLT and a second exam focusing on liberal arts and sciences were somehow racist in nature. The group was seeking more than $300 million in damages but a federal court eventually dismissed the case. Despite the fact that the courts gave the testing program a thumbs up, it seems that the testing regimen will be scrapped anyway.

American IQ has dropped FOURTEEN POINTS in the last hundred years.
That means a sixth grader 100 years ago had more intelligence aptitude than a high school graduate today. Japanese 10th graders hold more aptitude than four-year college graduates in the USA - AND IT SHOWS.
No wonder the snowflake and millennials have the smarts to burn cars and spread shit on neighborhood doors, but don't have the common sense to pour piss out of a boot, or the ability to read at the 5th grade level.

I am not surprised at all.

Remember this the next time the left accuses us of being anti-education.

And don't forget...TEACHERS ARE UNDER PAID!!!!

Homeschooling!
Private schools!
Charter schools, if allowed in NY and they aren't bound by this rule!
The idea of an illiterate school teacher is an egregious violation of what education allegedly is supposed to be!

Education is a money delivery system to people - teachers and administrators - who can do no useful work.
It was not always so, but that is what it has degenerated into.
-
Let's abolish education while we are at it! :mental:

That's why our daughter is in a Catholic school, and, far more importantly, we go over her homework with her. We don't do it for her; what we do is make her explain why she answered things the way she did. If she's wrong, we let her figure out why. Parental involvement is so critical in this.

Absolutely! We homeschooled our munchkins "K-12", so educating our kids was our lifestyle for quite a few years. I was in a Lutheran parochial school for Grades 1-3 (back when the death of the last dinosaur was in the newspapers). My parents kept tabs on my work. When that school closed and I had to go to a PS I was half a year ahead in Math, and a couple years ahead in Reading.
There are many good teachers in PSs, but they are hamstrung, variously, by the state-ordered curricula they have to use, adminicrats who can't/won't take care of discipline problems, lousy teachers who promote students who don't know what they should coming into the good teachers' classes, and parents who would defend little Johnny or Janey if they murdered a classmate.

Up until about ten years ago, when a PARENT still had the legal right to:
#1 - speak out against transgenderism as not only being unnatural, but an abomination in the eyes of God and a proven historical marker of the downfall of any civilization
#2 - train a child up in the way that 'they should go' - specifically right from wrong, morality from immorality, good from bad -vs- the political correctness being used to brainwash America's children into A-POLITICAL zombies
#3 - teach a child that adultery and FORNICATION was not only wrong, but it was an act against not only the child's body, but also violated the laws of God that mairrage is a beautiful and wonderful act of procreation and was intended by their Creator to be an act between ONE MAN and ONE WOMAN
#4 - prevent their children from being exposed to the secular influences in the immoral teachings of an immoral society who tossed their family values out the window and traded them for the IMmoral values of Hollywood, the ACLU, SPLC, MANBLA, and every other perverted organization the PTA could manage to cram into the public education's DEMONIC platform
#5 - PREVENT their children from activities that lead up to teen pregnancies (as young as 12) that are promoted in public education and equip them and still provide them with informing them that their child was PREGNANT. As it is now in many states (thanks to PLANNED PARENTHOOD), a child can just casually mention to the teacher that they lost their period and get a FREE ABORTION * WITHOUT THE KNOWLEDGE OR CONSENT * of the parent (again, thanks to the demonic, satanic PLANNED PARENTHOOD

Looks like a race to the bottom;
The U.S. ranks 24th in literacy
4 December 2013
According to the Program for International Student Assessment, the average reading literacy score for U.S. fifteen-year old students is 498 (out of 1000 possible points). That is enough to make the United States rank twenty-fourth out of sixty-five educational systems ranked in that category. Shangai, China, ranked first, with a score of 570.

As the illiterate become teachers, the illiteracy rate will continue downward until we elect Miley Cyrus
president of the USA. :thatsright:

What pisses me off so much about this is that this country - and many others - are so heavily based and dependent on skills like Reading, Math, Science, and History, that failing to teach a child to read sabotages them for life (except for being a "teacher", apparently). This like raping children without legal consequences, and getting paid to do it.
-
Remember, no one does a better job at making sure our children grow up stupid than being taught by stupid adults. Democrats in the making.
-
WTF! And now people that teach our kids don't have to know how to READ well. oh thats a great idea

Study: 4-in-5 Oklahoma City students can’t read clocks
A new study shows that only 1-in-10 Oklahoma City kids ages 6-12 own a watch. And only 1-in-5 know how to read it.
"Yeah, I was super surprised," said Caitlin Carnes, who works for the Boys & Girls Club at Santa Fe South Elementary. "When I was growing up that was something that we learned. I don't know if that makes me old or not."
In a school that has a majority Latino population, telling time is an especially critical skill, Carnes said, particularly when other cultures use 24-hour or "military" time systems.
More than 150 students took the time-telling survey, which featured 15 questions. Only 31 students passed. Only 15 earned perfect scores.

That's an apples-to-parsnips comparison, H2BM. Reading - whether dead-tree books or text on a computer screen - is an essential life skill in all but the least developed societies. Reading a traditional clock, decreasingly so for the last 40-50 years (true digital watches transitioned from exotic toy to an ordinary consumer commodity product over 40 years ago). Between my watch, the time display on my computer screen, and my cell phone, I don't need to consult a traditional clock pretty much ever. Being able to reading a traditional clock has gone from being a near essential to a very useful skill.

Legislators in California introduce bill to exempt teachers from state income tax
Legislators in California recently introduced a bill that would offer educators major tax breaks in an effort to keep them in the classroom and combat the state’s growing teacher shortage.
Democratic senators Henry Stern of Los Angeles and Cathleen Galgiani of Stockton earlier this month introduced Senate Bill 807, which would exempt teachers from paying the state income tax – which would be the equivalent of a 4 percent to 6 percent salary increase – after five years in the classroom.
