Title: Obamas Sign $60 Million Deal for His-and-Her Books...
Post by: HAPPY2BME on February 28, 2017, 07:09:16 PM

Former president Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama have signed with Penguin Random House, according to a press release. The news followed a bidding war that reportedly exceeded $60 million for publishing rights to both their books, according to the FT. The exact numbers of the deal was not disclosed.

The priciest presidential book deal before the Obamas was Bill Clinton's 2004 memoir, which was bought for $15 million.

Who else was bidding: HarperCollins, which is owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp, Simon & Schuster, which is owned by CBS, and Macmillan.

Irony: FT pointed out that if HarperCollins had won the bid, the Obamas books would have been under the same publisher as Fox's Bill O'Reilly, who was a huge critic of Obama.

Conservative author and commentator Mark Steyn reacted to this news on the Stewart Varney show and it was hilarious. In the clip below, Steyn says:

“I liked Obama’s previous book because it was one of the great works of fiction, you know with his composite girlfriend and his imaginary racist white friend. And I remember he wrote about his grandfather in Indonesia who supposedly died in the colonial struggle against the Dutch but actually died falling off a chair while changing the drapes.”

Stuart Varney laughs through the whole thing. Watch:
