Oh my.

But this was obviously "posted" a day before Skins opened the doors.

Welcome Back to Discussionist! PLEASE READ

It's been two months, but we finally got Discussionist back up and running. We apologize for the long absence, and we appreciate your patience. It'll be interesting to see if anyone returns.

Here are few things that you should know now that the site is back:

Discussionist was not hacked.
I know it probably sounds crazy that this site was gone for two months even though it was not actually hacked. The Discussionist website was voluntarily taken down by the Discussionist administrators as a security precaution. Back on election day the other website we run (Democratic Underground) was hacked, using a security flaw that existed in the forum software we use on that website and this website. When we became aware of the hack on Democratic Underground, and when it became apparent that the hack over on Democratic Underground was a result of a security flaw in our software, we decided to take this site down so we would not expose our members here to a possible breach.

So, why did it take so long to get the site back up?
When our software was compromised, our first priority was performing a complete security review in order to identify and correct any vulnerabilities. That process took a few weeks, during which time both of our websites were taken offline. We brought Democratic Underground back online first because that website is significantly larger than this website, with many more visitors than this one, and also much more important to our bottom line. (Sorry, it's true.) Unfortunately, once we had Democratic Underground back up, we still had a lot of work left to get Discussionist working. In order to simplify the job of administering two different websites, and also speed up the process of getting Discussionist back online, we decided to standardize the software across both sites so they work in more-or-less the same way.

So, what does that mean exactly?
Basically it means we changed the jury system so jurors are no longer enforcing their own standard, and instead are enforcing a set of rules provided by the administrators. But don't worry, we don't think things will change very much here. We still want to let you all run the site without much (or any) interference from us, the administrators. So we have provided a limited set of rules that reflect the standards that were being enforced already. They are:

+ No personal attacks
+ No hate speech
+ No harassment, threats, or advocating harm or violence
+ No graphic content
+ No commercial spam

A little more detail is provided on our Terms of Service page.

As part of the new system, there is an appeals process built in, which (theoretically) sends an appeal to the administrators so we can review jury decisions. That part of the system was included here because it exists over on Democratic Underground and we didn't want to spend the time to remove it. But the truth is that we aren't that interested in injecting ourselves into the moderating process here on Discussionist, and we aren't that interested in reading a bunch of bullshit appeals. If you all use the function sparingly and in good faith then it'll probably stay, but if the appeals are mostly a waste of our time (and yours) then we'll get rid of it. Discussionist is a hobby for us, not a job.

And don't let Lamond get away with acting as if he never promised to "school" us on the elections.

Remind him of that promise until he finally carries it out.

It looks to me as if there's only been about six or half a dozen members show up there thus far.

But within 24 business hours, word should get around.....

I didn't think any site could be more difficult to navigate than DU, but I was wrong. Discussionist sucks.

It's an attempt to rewrite from the ground up long defunct DCScript's DCForum+ including all of the custom modifications made to it by Team Skins over the years into one unified package. I really thought the plan with Discussionist was to eventually sell/lease the platform out once its 'debugged' by its users. I guess that hack makes it clear the software isn't ready for primetime.

Yes, they do. The best way to offend DI liberals is to use a confederate flag avatar.

I think the current lack of participation is due to the password reset crap being broken or VERY SLOW.  I submitted my first over 2.5 hours ago and still haven't gotten an email from them.

Damn, missed the reboot today.  It'll probably take 24 business hours to get my password anyway.

I had my new password pretty quickly.  I am guessing that there are a lot of the usual suspects that will avoid showing their faces on the board until all of their posts from November sink about 6 pages in.  And of course if anyone calls them on it, the alert buttons will be worn out.

And the new jury system is lame.

Don't forget that when Lamond shows up--and he's probably hiding for a while, hoping everyone'll forget--to not let him get away acting like he never promised to "school" us on the elections.

I think he needs shunned until he carries out that promise, his promise.
