Title: each winter it gets harder for the Tobe; hopes to chill out

I've been a trucker for 20 winters, and each winter it gets harder.

It's not because my skills have deteriorated. When you're 24, you're 10 feet tall and bullet proof. When you get to be 44, mortality starts to creep into your bones and you become more aware of the dangers associated with life on the road.

That's what's behind my latest talk of a career move.

I've been lost in a whirlwind of ideas and emotions, lately. I need to simplify things. I just need to go in and punch the clock and then come home and watch some tube for a little while. Kinda let my unconscious work on a few things in the basement of my mind and just chill out.

1. I hear ya...

With all that is going on, I'm looking to see if I can do an early retirement...even though I am no where no retirement age..

<<<wonders what's "all that is going on" with the hipster chick.

2. It's time to come off the road.

For a few years I've been telling a driver with 37 years of over the road flatbed (oversized) loads ... it's time for something easier on the body.  Chaining down loads in the single digits really isn't safe for an old man. This week he is on a new driving job  and realized that I'm right.  So, he'll be at yet another new trucking job before the end of the month.

Driverless trucks are coming soon.

What life on the road? Tobin spends more time posting on DU than he does driving a truck.

So let me get this straight-

Ole Tubs has been driving for 20 years, making trucker's wages that entire time, and has what to show for it?

Oh, great! A government or NGO social worker with a clock-puncher approach to and attitude toward their job?!

I have no problem with people leaving their jobs at their jobs when they leave for home at the end of their work day. I've done my best to do that my entire career. But when I'm at my job I care about doing it well and efficiently; and improving what I work on and how I and my coworkers work on it; and helping my coworkers learn and improve. I don't live in Tobers' world, even without his medicated state being considered.

God, I yearn for that day. I'm working or on call 24 hours, every day of the year.
You will see me spending a lot of cave time, but it is because I am sitting in this cursed chair in front of my computer for a min of 12 hours a day, monitoring, putting out technical fires, doing after hours maint.  I've been at this for too many years.
It doesn't help that I work for a very good friend, and that I do enjoy my line of work, as much as I may bitch about it on certain days.
I quite literally thank God every day that I have a job, get paid a decent wage, and at least enjoy what I do. But it does get tiring.

Worst Harvey Korman impersonation ever.

At least not without adult supervision . . .
