Police on Sunday were hunting a Santa Claus-clad killer who opened fire at a nightclub in Istanbul during New Year's celebrations, killing at least 39 people and wounding nearly 70 others, according to Istanbul's governor and Turkey's state-run news agency.

At least one policeman was stationed outside of the Reina nightclub when the attack occurred, but the gunman shot him and a civilian outside the club before entering and firing on people partying inside, Gov. Vasip Sahin said.

"Unfortunately (he) rained bullets in a very cruel and merciless way on innocent people who were there to celebrate New Year's and have fun," Sahin told reporters.

Another deadly terrorist attack at Reina nightclub in Istanbul. Turkey has had string of terrorist attacks in the past year.

A lot of Santa suits have four characteristics the killer must've found useful:

* Visually distracting - distracted people are less vigilant;

* The beard covers most facial features;

* Voluminous - good for hiding weapons and disguising one's form;

* Easy to remove; the guy just had to get alone for a minute or two.

I saw a video shot of the nightclub in question, as the attack was going on.  I'd hazard a guess and say that an AK-style weapon was being used, if the audio in the video is correct.

If it was an AK-47 being fired automatic, the killer may have had some training. I've heard that it's easy in full automatic to lose aim due to kick with the 7.62 round.

Strangely, it didn't sound--to me, anyway--as if the shooter was on full auto.  If he was firing semiauto, he definitely had training, as the shots were fairly rapid.

Drudge has a link to a piece where the main suspect is identified as being from an Islamic terrorist group affiliated with ISIS.

Erdogan seems to be bent on taking Turkey full Islamic. Welcome to the 11th Century! But is finding that the various full-Islamic factions "out there" are very Islamier-Than-Thou, and hungry to take power to themselves. I'm stuck between having sympathy for victims like those in the nightclub, who were just trying to live and enjoy life, and ironic satisfaction that the snakes in the basket of snakes Erdogan has embraced are biting him.

I've show one before, it's actually not too bad.
Although I imagine under stress that would change significantly. Not saying you can stay on target very well, but pretty close at those sort of ranges.
Of course you are talking to someone who shot a grand total of 30 rounds from one and it's the only full-auto I've ever fired. But I did stay at a holiday inn express last night so that bolsters my opinion  somewhat.

I sit corrected--I have no idea WTF I was thinking I heard.  :banghead:  Supposedly, the cocksucker (how I refer to ISIS terrorists) fired 180 rounds and threw grenades in between shooting.  That's what, six magazines' worth?

I can't believe that haven't caged this animal yet.
Sounds like police took a bunch of his cohorts down at least.
Hopefully when he goes down in a blaze, no one else gets hurt.
