So how would one smack down a jerk who says EXXON paid more taxes

than they pocketed in profit?
Are there charts or anything anywhere that show aything but the 30 billion in taxes compared to the 10 billion in profit?
No surprise that a DUmmy doesn`t realize profit is what is left after expenses which includes taxes. :whatever:
First few responses as always answer nothing.

10. Where is this coming from? I heard a similar thing at
work. The increase in gas is all taxes, the oil companies are not making any money on it and they aren't making enough to put into researching green technologies. Everyone in the room went quiet. No one responded. The person in question is a Christian home schooler. I didn't have the nerve to ask her where she heard that, I could lose my job.

16. Sure. Businesses are taxed 110% of revenue.
In the small Republican mind.
See above about what profit is.

per CNN
"In addition to making hefty profits, Exxon also had a hefty tax bill. Worldwide, the company paid $10.5 billion in income taxes in the second quarter, $9.5 billion in sales taxes, and over $12 billion in what it called 'other taxes.'"
MP: In other words, Exxon Mobil paid $32.361 billion in taxes in the second quarter, which works out to $4,114 in taxes per second. Another way to look at it - Exxon paid almost $3 in taxes ($32.361 billion) for every $1 in profits ($11.68 billion), see chart above.

In 2004, for example, a gallon of gasoline retailed for about $2.00 while a barrel of oil sold for about $33. Today, oil’s price is higher by 275 percent while gasoline’s price is higher by only 100 percent.

Hey DUmmies...real simple google thing if you don't know of actual sites that have financial charts(you also could request a copy of such statements from the company itself)
http://finance.yahoo.com/q/is?s=XOM&annual
INCOME TAX EXPENSE 2007 29,864,000
Net Income Applicable To Common Shares $40,610,000

23. Must be something wrong with that
If they're hemorrhaging 20 billion a quarter in taxes alone, not even considering other costs, they'd be out of business in short order.
Or wait, is the profit AFTER the taxes? So they're complaining about making $11 billion profit? It doesn't matter what kinda taxes you pay, $11 billion in pure profit... wow.
Ignorance and stupidity followed by envy.
Then just pure ignorance...

31. "$9.5 billion in sales taxes" and "over $12 billion in what it called 'other taxes.'"
Sales tax? Other taxes?
OTHER taxes? The biggest category is OTHER?
Dude, can you name an OTHER tax? One that makes up more than 1/3 of your total tax tab?

Welcome to DU yadda yadda yadda...
Called property taxes to name one as well as business taxes that I can`t even imagine.
At one time, maybe still,in NY a business paid an extra tax on petroleum products that a consumer didn`t to cite an example.
-
Capital Gains Taxes, is such exist in the US would be a big hit.

You can NEVER get these folks to understand that a company pays ZERO tax. They are simply tax collectors. That is why they have such a hard time explaining how you can pay more in taxes and you can make in profit. They are total idiots when it comes to financial matters.
