Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl–held captive for five years after being captured by the Taliban in Afghanistan–has requested a pardon from President Obama, Fox News has learned from two senior US officials.

According to a well-placed source, Bergdahl thanked the president for rescuing him in May 2014 in a controversial exchange for five Taliban prisoners from Gitmo, in addition to asking for a pardon in the letter.

The Secretary of the Army was copied on the letter to the president, but the pardon was not formally requested through the military chain of command.

A Justice Department official confirms that it received a pardon petition from Bergdahl. Pentagon and White House officials would not immediately respond for comment.

Bergdahl’s pardon letter was sent to the president via the Department of Justice, officials said. There was no immediate comment from DOJ.

I can see Obama giving him a pardon as a big "@#$% YOU!" to  the military.  If this little weasel gets pardoned, it will effect good order and discipline in the military.

How does the POTUS pardoning a mutineer, defector, and traitor who cost the lives of at least five of his fellow soldiers effect good order and discipline?

1.) He knows such a petition would be worse than useless when Trump is President.

2.) I've not served in the military, but the knowledge that every time they have an idiot like Obama as titular CinC traitors could be coddled could not be good - or even neutral - for morale. Further, I'm sure those in units who lost good men trying (as they thought) to rescue this POS have derived no little satisfaction knowing that the POS is in prison.

This establishes the precedent that you can desert in the face of the enemy in wartime and get away with it.  Tell me how that is NOT detrimental to an organization tasked with fighting and winning the nation's wars.

In spite of the fact that Obama always makes the wrong decision...there IS a possibility that there will NOT be a pardon.

Obama caught hell for the trade of the 5 worst terrorists in Gitmo for this deserter. Lord O expected praise, not flack.

Further Bergdahl is white, not black. Obama is a racist.

Those two factors could well mean no pardon.

OTOH, the little puke is a Muslim and his parents are Muslim Brotherhood sympathizers, so that sort of balances out the Black/white side of the scale a bit.

There is one rather hopeful bit of information on this, though.  I have observed that Obama tends to run these pardons, sentence-reductions, etc. through a herd of DOJ bureaucrat lawyers since the amount of actual legal knowledge or expertise that Obama has couldn't fill a thimble.  This usually takes quite a bit of time.  Given that there's about 47 and one half days left before he leaves the White House, there is some likelihood that the clock will run out on the traitor before the bureaucrats can get around to telling Obama what to do.

Ironically, in this case, it's possible that it's actually to the country's benefit that Obama is the affirmative action President, not knowledgeable or learned enough to actually make decisions on his own.

Dosent he have to be convicted before a pardon can be given?

No, actually.  Ford pardoned Nixon before any real prosecution began.  A President can pardon someone for any past federal crimes even before any prosecution begins.
