Donald Trump’s phone call with Tsai Ying-wen, the president of Taiwan, was not like other phone calls with foreign leaders, even by the appalling standard Trump has been setting so far:
Read: Trump contacted the leader of a nation that is a democracy. I can understand why the DUmp monkeys would be deeply upset.
The telephone call, confirmed by three people, is believed to be the first between a US president or president-elect and a leader of Taiwan since diplomatic relations between the two were cut in 1979.
Long, long, overdue.
Although it is not clear if the Trump transition team intended the conversation to signal a broader change in US policy towards Taiwan, the call is likely to infuriate Beijing which regards the island as a renegade province.
We can only hope. Communist China has not been a strategic ally in quite some while, and they seem to want to get in bed with Russia while playing games in the Indian Ocean. Maybe they are now realizing their games will have consequences since the epitome of weakness will be gone from the White House.
The Taiwanese president ran on a platform of independence from China, so Trump’s action here is likely to be especially provoking to Beijing. And then there's this, from November:
Just imagine, the population of Taiwan wouldn't want to join a communist utopia. Why would that be?
The mayor of Taoyuan confirmed rumors on Wednesday that US president-elect Donald Trumpwas considering constructing a series of luxury hotels and resorts in the northwest Taiwanese city.
He is a job creator.
But hey, he might become the first U.S. president to open a resort in Taiwan, and if that doesn’t contribute to American greatness, I don’t know what will.
Well, it would be more than his predecessor accomplished.

I have no problem with Trump calling the President of Taiwan. He acknowledged a reality Carter denied in 1979. Taiwan has functioned as an independent nation for nearly 70 years.
The mayor of Taoyuan ...
Since not many DU-folk are likely to know much about Taiwanese geography and this post might be seen by a DU-onlurker, Taoyuan is a large city that borders with the capital city, Taipei. The international airport that serves Taipei is located in Taoyuan. Taoyuan and Taipei both have a lot of companies with operations in those cities. All in all, it would make a great deal of sense for Trump's hotel business to have a hotel in Taoyuan, near the airport.
DU-folk are trying to advance the narrative that Trump is profiting from being President. Two problems: 1.) Trump isn't President yet; 2.) they have no evidence Trump spoke about building a hotel in Taoyuan with the President of Taiwan.

Huh..... I had forgotten all about that. I just assumed Ronaldus Maximus reestablished those ties.

I read this (and many more terrible diplomatic booboos) in a swipe from the nyt and they were apoplectic!!!. The next 8 years are going to be great as Trump and his team yank the really smart people in the media and the democrat party (birm).
