Serving In The Military Will Be A Waste Of Time Under Trump & GOP.
I cannot think of any reason for a person to enlist in the military going forward. What are we now protecting. The country that is so infected with racism, bigotry, xenophobia and misogyny cannot be great again. It is a myth. We have rejected everything this country stood for.
If we do not mend our ways in these areas we are hypocrites not worth saving. The country's soul is sick the way we are now. No one in their right mind would ever consider a person who is not only so flawed they are down right dangerous. I believe what we have done is just as bad as leaving your children with a known mean pedophile. I do not understand how we could have made a worse pick. Our decision defies all logic and decency no matter how you try to justify it.
So even giving your life for the country right now would seem to be a waste. The only redeeming thing about service is to save what is left of the country so we have the ability to change our course.

It can only be a good thing to have fewer people in the military who would regard DU as anything but a slideshow on 'What not to do with your life.'

I Ask Myself Will I Ever Feel Good About Anything Again After This Election.
At 73 based on everything I know and have experienced in this country I just do not know if I will ever feel good about anything again. Personally this election has been devastating because I understand what madness we are facing. Ever since Reagan ****ed the country all I have seen is a slow slide to where we are right now. In actuality we have a raging psychopath now in the White House. Sorry Trump will prove more than a sociopath. And the GOP will prove itself to be the reincarnation of the Nazis. And right wing Christians will prove they are as bad as the Islamic terrorists.
Of course we have to fight all this insanity because we have no other choice. At 73 and retired why do I have to fight this insanity at all. Thanks to racism and mass determined stupidity and apathy on the part of 46% of people who did not vote we are in a crisis as far as I am concerned.
Each day with each tweet Trump proves how incompetent and vicious he is. And it is not even the beginning of the administration from beyond hell actually. Even hell won't be as bad as what I fear.
I am no mood to say merry Christmas and I am even in a worse mood to even think happy New Year.

I am working on finding hope when I see little. And I am working on being optimistic. There is another aspect of this situation that I have not shared. I lost my foot to staph 3 years ago and have been doing pretty well resuming most activities including winning a flight in a golf tournament where I was the only golfer with a wooden leg LOL.
However, my spouse has developed a health condition that is scary. It is such that it leads to all sorts of possibilities that are worrisome. Until we can see a cardiologist after a echocardiogram we won't know what is going on and what can be done.

Joking and other chaffing aside, I am sad to hear that. For her sake I suggest setting aside your anger and bitterness - in and out of her presence - and devoting more time and energy to her. Make your presence a in her life a source of encouragement and comfort. We all know how out temporal lives will end, but why make the time until that event unpleasant.

Dingleberry here says that he's 73. 2016-73=1943. That means that he was alive, if not exactly sentient, when a bunch of racist, bigoted, zenophobic misogynists invaded Europe. And yes, they most definitely were all of those things and more: a segregated army, that referred to their enemy derisively as "krauts," specifically excluding people with German or Italian heritage, and who definitely would never hesitate to grab a woman's ass just for the fun of it. And what were these people called, even by the uber-lib Tom Brokaw?

AW, if you are saying that men of German heritage were kept out of the Army in the ETO that would be incorrect. My family name is German, and my Dad and his siblings spoke German at home and attended a Lutheran church that switched from services in German to English some time in the 1930s. May Dad and his younger brother were 4-F, but their older brother served in North Africa and Italy. Then there's their theater commander, Eisenhower.

My family name is German, and my Dad and his siblings spoke German at home and attended a Lutheran church that switched from services in German to English some time in the 1930s. May Dad and his younger brother were 4-F, but their older brother served in North Africa and Italy. Then there's their theater commander, Eisenhower.
I should not have made such a blanket statement.
The War Department definitely did seek out people who spoke fluent German and Italian (and French), but they were subject to some additional scrutiny. They typically tried to route those who didn't have a specific skills needed in the ETO to go to the Pacific instead. At least that's what Ambrose documented, and I have no cause to think that he was inaccurate in that.

I can't ask my Uncle Erwin whether he went through any particular scrutiny, since he died 20 years ago. It's not improbable, though his parents and older sister came to the US a decade before the US entered WW1, and apparently were checked out by the Feds back then. He did have 2 particularly valuable skills, speaking German and being a mechanic (raised on a farm and graduated from a tech school). The Army had him working on trucks and tanks. OTOH, his younger sister's husband (also of German heritage) was a gunner in the USAAF in the PTO.

My family too has a German name. My grandpa was a doctor over in England treating soldiers. Oddly enough, there was some German letters found inside some old books, even with hitler stamps on them from the same time period. Nothing addressed to him or the rest of the family so I'd assume they were kept for the novelty of it.
