United States citizens can now be arrested on American soil by immigrants, after the Denver Sheriff Department was ordered to begin hiring non-citizens.
The Denver Sheriff Department had previously made U.S. citizenship a job requirement for its deputies.
Now they have been ordered to pay a ($10,000) fine, identify non-citizens who have been “discriminated against†in the past, and begin hiring immigrants.
The settlement with the justice department also requires the sheriff’s department to train its human resources staff on anti-discrimination provisions of federal immigration laws and reviews its procedures to make sure they are in line with federal law, the justice department said.
The department began hiring 200 deputies as part of its ongoing reform effort.

DoJ Fines Denver Sheriff’s Dept for Passing Over Applications of Non-U.S. Citizens
Ordered to retrain staff on non-discrimination practices.
The U.S. Department of Justice ordered the Denver Sheriff’s Department to fork over $10,000 for passing over employee applications from people who weren’t U.S. citizens. Also, the sheriff’s office must reconsider those applicants for future jobs and must retrain its staff on non-discrimination practices.
The U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Act states that employers must consider any applicant who is a work-authorized immigrant, states the Denver Post. The DoJ determined the federal law was violated because the sheriff’s office made citizenship a job requirement. Now, they must retrain staff on anti-discrimination provisions and alter hiring practices, so it aligns with federal requirements.
“The Denver Sheriff Department maintains its commitment to treat all people with dignity and respect, and is proud to have one of the most diverse workplaces in Colorado,†spokesman Simon Crittle said. “While we didn’t commit this violation intentionally, we accept responsibility and are taking steps to clarify policy and amend language in hiring documents.â€
According to the Post, the Denver department went on a hiring spree in 2015 and early 2016 searching for 200 new deputies as part of an “ongoing reform effort†and “to ease deputy fatigue and reduce millions it was spending in overtime.†But leave it to the federal government to make them increase their spending over a silly thing like employing real Americans.
