Trump picks billionaire Betsy DeVos, school voucher advocate, as Education Secretary
Source: Washington Post
President-elect Donald Trump intends to name Betsy DeVos, a conservative activist and billionaire philanthropist who has pushed forcefully for private school voucher programs nationwide, as his nominee for Education Secretary, according to a person close to DeVos.
Trump’s pick underlines his promises on the campaign trail to put “school choice†— the expansion of taxpayer-funded charter schools and vouchers for private and religious schools — at the center of his efforts on education.
DeVos and her husband are major GOP donors who during the 2016 cycle gave a total of $2.7 million to the GOP and to Republican candidates and political action committees; they made no donations to Democrats, according to an analysis by the Center for Responsive Politics.
DeVos’s brother is Erik Prince, the founder of Blackwater, one of the most profitable private security firms during the Iraq War. Blackwater came under intense scrutiny after the company’s guards shot and killed 17 Iraqi civilians in Baghdad in 2007; four guards were convicted on charges related to the massacre. Prince has since left the company, which is now called Academi.

Trump was playing Kabuki theatre by meeting with Jerry Falwell, to make his real choice seem less threatening.
DeVos is for privatization and will now be in a position to oversee the dismantling of our public school system. Though less well known, she is just as dangerous, maybe more so.

15. Making Christ Great Again.
Can't do that with public education! But you can do it with public education funds!! Just start a charter school and get rich while doing it too, by depriving public education of the money taxpayers provide while taking a big cut for profits.
This is sickening.

4. Good news.
Your kids will not have to attend public school with all those heathens and moozelims and secular humanists. You can use other people's money to play out your religious and economic bigotry. Making America great again!
^ Notice these mutts' complaint isn't that their kids will be adversely effected. A voucher system, after all, allows them to send their kids anywhere they want. Their complaint is it will not be able to educate YOUR kids the way it wants.

Yes, because the hallmark of fascism is to allow you to educate your children as you deem best.

8. They just want to tweak Bush's "Leave No Child Behind" policy
to make it "Leave Only Poor Non-white Kids Behind." That's what charter schools, voucher programs, and schools of choice programs are really about. They want to let the "good" schools choose to accept only the "good" students. Kids from poor families whose parents didn't go to college or even graduate high school have to go to some garbage school where nobody will really try.
NCLB was Kennedy, you ****ing publicly educated idiot.

28. What happened to Trump's pledge to help inner cities
you know, the "ghettos" as he called them
This ain't working now and it won't work then
We need to improve the laggard schools, not ditch everything
Inner city families are begging for this, you wannabe slaver.
If this program passes Trump will pick up major percentages in Dem urban strongholds in 2020.
And just to cap it off...

Those morons really have no clue about charter schools. Yes, charter schools are funded by taxpayer money, because ............ they are public schools. I won't pretend to speak for other states - though I'm sure many have similar provisions in their state constitutions - but CA has a very clear provision that taxpayer money may not be used in a "sectarian" (= religious) purpose. At. All. (As an aside to any DU-onlurker who may chance to read this post, I'm fine with that provision, and have no desire to weaken or eliminate it) IOW, if XYZ Assembly of God or LMNOP Baptist Church wants to have a charter school, it cannot teach religion as a required class or during normal school hours. And it could not use religious curricular materials such as A Beka or Bob Jones University Press.
Parochial schools are private schools, plain and simple. And somehow, when it comes to tests for college entry - the SAT and ACT - those ignorant knuckle-dragging Catholics' and Fundie-gelicals' private school and homeschool students kick PS students' @$$es. A rational person would think that PS educrats might have a look at those parochial schools and homeschoolers, figure out what they are doing right, and emulate it.
Educrats being but a subspecies of bureaucrat, their response is to try to ban homeschooling outright (they've been smacked down in court, and homeschooling is legal in all 50 states, DC, and US territories) or regulate it out of existence (the courts have smacked down these efforts as well). Were the educrats ever to succeed in banning or driving homeschooling out of existence, private parochial schools would become their next target. Banning private schools or regulating them out of existence would require the overturning of a couple of USSC cases - if they weren't overturned while killing off homeschooling - but the educrats and Christian haters would certainly try, and keep on trying until they succeeded or got decisively smacked down.

I crap bigger than the collective IQ of the DUmp.

Betsy DeVos is the daughter-in-law of one of the co-founders of Amway. Her father Edgar built a chain of auto parts stores in Michigan. Apparently, teachers' unions are not fans of her. With those facts alone, she raises the collective hackles and blood pressure of the DUmp, which is a very good thing.

Absolutely everything Trump does is causing the DUmp monkeys to go further insane. I welcome such outrage.
