After eight, dark years of a miserable presidency, and seeing the "Sun coming up" after that long period, I'm willing to hope that "... Trump pointed to Mattis and called him 'a great man'" will result in the suggested positive outcome...

Current word is that if Mattis can get a waiver from the House and the Senate,  removing the 7 - year wait after active duty, he will be the SecDef nominee.

LTG(R) Michael Flynn is in the same position, and IIRC, he got a waiver.
