This goes back to 1856 to 2012. Of the 40 Presidential Elections that took place from 1856 to 2012, 35 out of 40 candidates that won in Ohio won nationally. Five of them who won in Ohio lost nationally.
The Five Ohio Voted, But Lost Nationally
1856-John C. Fremont (James Buchanan)
1884-James G. Blaine (Grover Cleveland)
1892-Benjamin Harrison (Grover Cleveland)
1944- Thomas Dewey (Franklin D. Roosevelt)
1960 Richard Nixon (John F. Kennedy)
All of them were Republicans.
