Ok, who's feelin' it?

Who's feeling the pressure of these tough economic times? I went into shock yesterday when I went to the grocery store and saw the prices - especially potatoes. The same 10 lb bag I bought just three weeks ago is now nearly DOUBLE, from $2.79 to $4.77. And the variety next to it was $7.99!

I always saw this recession and inflation coming but I never imagined it would be this bad this fast. And word is it's only just beginning.

How are some of you getting along in these inflationary winds?

They're using "OK" instead of "so" now it seems....Small bongfire but plenty of "poor-me" hand-wringing.

Some more interesting contributons...

5. There's a Sav-a-Lot supermarket near me.

Discount off brands mostly. Bring your own bags.

I was looking at Spam. Next to it was generic Spam. Just before the checkout there was a battered cardboard box full of dented generic Spam for 25 cents a can.

The store has been more crowded than usual for the last three months. I know a woman who lives four blocks from there and can't afford either the cost of a car or the gas. She bikes down there every day and plans her meals solely on what's available that day. She has four small sons and gets as much each day as she can bike with.

The economy is being peeled back like a rotting onion.

"donating Member" hmmm..

18. It's horrible.

We needed help to pay the rent. My partner's hours were cut, and her checks have been pathetically thin. Our food stamps only go a quarter as far as they used to--now they're barely enough to make it through 2 weeks, much less a month. We're hitting food banks as often as we're allowed to, but that isn't very often these days, because donations are way down. Our electricity bill is ridiculously high, they're raising our damned rent AGAIN next month (fourth time in less than two years) and I'm only washing my hair once a week, and shaving my legs twice a month, in order to save money on shampoo and razor blades. We're using cheap dollar-store laundry and dish soap that's watered-down and doesn't go very far, because it's all that we can afford. We haven't eaten fresh fruit or vegetables in a month--everything canned, and the cheapest possible brands. We're eating a LOT of tuna fish, Kraft dinner, and cold cereal with tiny amounts of milk. We feed the kidlet a little better, but he's not getting the nutritional quality that he *should* be getting, either.

Being poor is a ****ing nightmare right now. Seriously. If not for occasional help from compassionate friends, I don't know what would happen to us. :(

Get a J.O.B you slack asshole. Tell your partner to get a better J.O.B. Leeching looters like you .... :censored:

Just out of curiosity, how large of a proportion of a monthly budget are razor blades?

Like maybe .0000017% of the budget?

I think the octopus primitive is stretching.

And being male, I of course use razor blades all the time, every day.  I can use a razor blade for three months, until it's as blunt as a hammer.  (Not as a "cost-cutting" measure; I've always been this way, using something until it's all used up.)

If they really cared about the enviroment, and wanted to cut down on costs they'd get a old style straight razor and a strop....

Ok, anyone get that last story? Two lesbians, one committing welfare fraud since it's doubtful she's reporting her 'partner's' income in order to qualify for those food stamps. Leech is right! I bet both are capable of improving their situations far beyond what they are bitching about living on now on the dime of other people who are actually...oh, WORKING and struggling in the same economy.  :banghead:

Well, I'm doubting they shave all the places I do, but a razor really only has a dual life for me so I can go through one in a week usually. Still, if one is using disposables it's maybe 2-5 bucks for a pack that will last a month, depending on how fancy you get them. Heck, they could kick in a depilatory for about 5 bucks in between shaves and that will probably last for 2 months if not more.

The really scary part is that they quite possibly recycle their own toilet paper.

They live on food stamps--a gift from taxpayers--and yet have enough change in the couch to afford the internet.

I don't begrudge people who need help. But jeez, show some appreciation for people who are working hard to provide for you, at least.

i just finished reading all the comments on an article in the SF Gate called "SF pushes legislation to promote good health" and basically, the taxes the Dummies pay in that state/city are sucking up all their funds. being 'healthy' sure seems to require a LOT of govt intervention  and taxes to make it work.

1. I was once part of a three-way polyamorous relationship. (Which is the reason we have our son.)

2. I quit school in 11th grade, after my Mom had a heart attack. I got a full-time job and took over the role of breadwinner for several years until she was finally healed enough to work again. I got my GED last year, and am about to start my second year of college, at age 29.

3. If I ever get famous, I intend to "spend" my celebrity in advocacy for the poor. I do the best I can now, but the biggest reason I'd like to be well-known someday is because that would help me accomplish even more.

28. Oh god. More than I could remember on the spot, but
 some examples:

She's willing to put up with me being on the computer for 12+ hours at a time sometimes, when the pain is bad and I'm using it as a distraction.

She never leaves a room without asking me if there's anything I need, or anything she can get for me.

She kisses me at 6:26 every day, since 6/26 is my birthday. (I return with 8:26 for her.)

She stops in the middle of doing things to tell me how beautiful I look right then--the light catching my hair at a certain angle, my eyes being particularly bright that day, just anything.

We say "I love you" (and mean it) thirty-odd times a day or more. After nine years of living together.

She knows me well enough to navigate my temperament like a champ, with no resentment or obsession about who's "right" or what's "fair."

When my tender heart compels me to give away our last twenty bucks to some needy person on a street corner, she never tries to talk me out of it. She shares my values and priorities, and never complains when I don't put *our* family first and foremost every time. My ex-husband once berated me for two HOURS about giving away ten bucks to a hungry beggar, even though he and I together were making about a thousand dollars a week then. ThinkBlue1966 and I barely make $150 a week now, but she's behind me 100%. God I love her.

She communicates with me about EVERYTHING. I don't have to guess what she's thinking, or what she's upset about. She tells me, without hyperbole, and then we talk it over. When she's being moody (or I am) due to hormones, she recognizes it without sounding accusatory or defensive, and we get through it. We can talk about anything in the world. We are not jealous of each other.

She thinks I am the most beautiful, talented, intelligent, and fascinating person that she's ever met, and she tells me so every day. She genuinely feels lucky to be with me. That attitude healed enormous, gaping wounds in my self-esteem that had been around since my school days.

She's just amazing. Everyone should be so lucky to have someone like her.

Came home today to find a UPS ticket on the front door.
 Sender's name: Hayden-McNeill Publishing

My guess is that this is my gratis copy for being a contributing author of WVU's English 101 textbook. I had two of my big papers published in it as student examples of an "ideal paper."

We found it at the local textbook store, too. Woot! I am officially published. My English professors informed me that this counts as publication for the sake of my eventual Master's Degree.

An "ideal paper" to illustrate common grammar errors, maybe.  And if that's considered "published", then I'm counting every post I've made here.  And she's already fulfilling her Master's requirements, even though she just got her GED?

Hey everyone! Looking for advice, new friends, etc.
It is extremely likely that I will be spending a month or two in London next summer, studying Political Science and working as an assistant to a Member of Parliament. It's a special study abroad program that my university sponsors, and I'll be earning college credit for my time there. I've already done the Orientation session, and my next meeting with my International Studies advisor (this Wednesday) is when I start planning the trip, creating a budget, and applying for scholarships, grants, etc.

So if I wind up spending next summer in England, does anyone want to hang out?  I'll probably be spending some weekends in Staffordshire, if London is too far away. I'll be there all alone without a single familiar face, so I'm trying to find some friends ahead of time who don't mind giving me hugs and hanging out and helping to keep me from becoming depressed and lonely. I'm really excited about the trip, and I'm looking forward to getting to know some UK DU'ers.

I guess the eeeeevil BFEE ruined the economy just in time to spoil her trip.  Just how many unemployed welfare recipients get grants to study abroad, anyway?

This is the same unpleasant DUmmy who posted pics of herself and her "SO" holding sheets up in front of anti-abortion protesters on her campus.  I believe we all picked that thread over pretty well.

Yes, my research confirms that she's living and going to school on the dime of the residents of West Virginia.

OMG! I just looked at the pics of these two...I'm assuming when she {i use that term loosely}is speaking of hormones she's talking about testosterone! They both look like long haired men! :-)
