Any tips on unloading a lot of old tools?

Cleaning out Dad's work bench where he has zillions of hand tools (some left to him by his dad, father in law, etc). I mean, there must be 50 box wrenches and 50 screwdrivers just for starters.

Then there's buckets of screws and bolts.

Also a few basic power tools.

Where do I start looking for a home for them? Proceeds go to my mom.

(My preference would be for someone to back a truck up to my garage and haul them away.)

1. Habitat for Humanity? Technical High School or college?

2. It's either that or advertising them

and hoping a backyard garage mechanic or small shop wants them.

When my dad died, I just opened the garage and told the neighbors to take what they wanted. They did clean it out quite a bit.

3. Some old tools are worth a lot.

It might be worth your while to do some research first.

4. Yes...this.

Wood hand planes, chisels. Look on eBay to get an idea.

5. I found several of those.

A market for vintage planes-- never would have figured.

6. I'm not sure about other tools other than woodworking tools from the past.

Bow saws is another example. Stanley planes...at one time before machines, there are so many that are used for one use, and even after. They are sought by collectors, and carpenters in the building restoration and preservation trade.

Coping saws...yankee screwdrivers....even plumb bobs for collectors...never mind the old time transit...

Go visit antique stores, and see if you recognize some of your dad's tools. You might be surprised.

Edit: you would probably be doing someone a great favor, by saying haul it all away. I say, at least get good pictures of the tools and go to the antique store. You will get a better price for mom by selling to the antique dealer than giving it away.

7. Good advice. And I think I did see a yankee screwdriver someplace.

I'm just up against this instinct I have to not have piles of unnecessary clutter around. I know there may be collectibles and things of value among all this but the more space it takes up the more I want to go nuclear. I've even thought about paying to have it hauled away then handing my mom a couple hundred bucks out of pocket and telling her I sold the whole lot.

<<<am in a better mood, at least for now, because can copy-and-paste from Skins's island instead of having to go over to Manny's jackass message board to find material to bring here.

One of the DUmps common themes...the value of a families estate.

Ah,I should have read a bit more carefully.
The primitive plans to steal them and cheat its mother out of the value.

Real men (which cannot be found at the DUmp) can NEVER have enough tools.

The ONLY correct answer to "what do I do with my departed Dad's tools?" is "add them to my considerable tool collection."

When TSHTF these pussies will be the first to die from just plain uselessness.

Man.  That, is no shit.  We had a conference call with all the siblings, a while back, to iron out who wanted what at time of death.  I already got the weapons ( among others, an low use 50's manufacture 1897 Winchester pump I converted to a trench gun) so, that's cool.  The only thing I put my name on was tools.

Neither brother is too adept at DIY, as they would rather pony up the coin for work done and couldn't care less.  USN Machinist Mate Dad, has a bunch.  :yahoo:

Yep.  A real man can never have enough tools.  Even if one uses a tool only once in 50 years, if it is needed at the time, then the justifies having it around.  H5!!!!

DAMN RIGHT!!!!!!   :cheersmate:

Might explain why DUmmies fear guns as well.  Guns are merely tools that are useful to those who can and will use them, just like a hammer or ratchet...

Tools = Work.  Work is a four-letter word to DUmmies.  (Unless you're Joe Biden, in which case "jobs" is a three-letter word.)
