Title: Obama's plan for saving energy

At a recent campaign event in Springfield, Missouri, Senator Obama (D-Illinois) once again made it clear that offshore oil drilling is not included in his energy plan. "There are things that you can do individually though to save energy – making sure your tires are properly inflated," said Obama. "Simple thing, but we could save all the oil that they're talking about getting off drilling if everybody was just inflating their tires and getting regular tune-ups. You could actually save just as much," he contends.

Wow.  Why didn't anyone think of that before?  It's pure genius!  Just like Jimmyboy Carter's sweater solution.

I'll remember that when I drive across the country in a couple weeks.   :whatever:

the RNC is apparently sending out tire gauges this week that are stamped, "Barack Obama's National Energy Plan"

Oh yeah, over inflate those radial tires. It'll make'em easier to push up hill so you can coast off the other side. ...and those lumps, bumps and bulges on the tires caused by broken belts from over inflating them could improve your sex life or at least put some measure of thrill back into it.

so, what's he going to do to solve this alleged "under-inflation crisis"?  use the highway patrol in all 50 states to pull
people over and ticket them if they are under-inflated?  create a whole new law enforcement agency?

maybe he could just donate some of the pressure from his galactically over-inflated ego;  THAT would solve the damn
problem.

I suppose Obama is ASE-certified now.  Good to know... if I break down on the highway, I'm calling BO instead of AAA.

Nedra Pickler fact-checked the contention by Democratic Sen. Barack Obama that “Making sure your tires are properly inflated, simple thing, but we could save all the oil that they’re talking about getting off drilling, if everybody was just inflating their tires and getting regular tuneups. You could actually save just as much.”

Except she did not check any of the facts. The story is here.

Let me try. America’s economy requires 20 million barrels of oil a day. 9 million barrels go to gasoline.

Pickler said tire inflation could improve gas mileage by 3.3%.

That would be 297,000 barrels a day.

Except most people already have their tires inflated properly. So the net savings would be smaller.

Figure 30% of the people will inflate their tires. That brings the savings to 90,000 barrels a day.

Or less than ½% of the 20 million barrels consumed each day.

That 90,000 barrels is a far cry from the 1 million to 2 million barrels a day expected from offshore oil.

Obama’s statement — “Making sure your tires are properly inflated, simple thing, but we could save all the oil that they’re talking about getting off drilling, if everybody was just inflating their tires and getting regular tuneups. You could actually save just as much” — is ridiculous. AP should be smart enough to simply state that.

The problem is worse than we imagined.  You forgot the other seven states, sir.

RNC Delivers Tire Gauges to Obama Press Corps (http://embeds.blogs.foxnews.com/2008/08/05/rnc-delivers-tire-gauges-to-obama-press-corps/)

When the Obama press corps arrived at the Elkhart, Indiana, Jameson Inn where the campaign is staying tonight, Obama staffers were on hand to distribute room keys - and a small white envelope from the RNC.

That’s right, the Republican National Committee.

Inside the envelope addressed to individual members of Obama’s regular traveling press, was a small tire gauge labeled “Obama’s Energy Plan” along the side, and a note that joyously read, “Happy Birthday, Barack Obama!”

The RNC along with the McCain campaign seized upon Obama’s advice to a voter last week to properly inflate her tires to increase fuel efficiency, and have managed to create a sideshow to mock Obama’s “judgment” and “experience” when it comes to energy policy.

Today Obama helped continue the story line when he accused the Republicans of being “ignorant” on the issue.  At his Ohio town hall this afternoon, Obama said, “They think it is funny that they are making fun of something that is actually true. They need to do their homework because this is serious business.”

The RNC doubled down on their humorous assault tonight with its “gift” to the press corps. “We hope you’ll enjoy this complimentary tool related to Barack Obama’s energy plan - your very own tire gauge. Because, instead of actually increasing America’s domestic oil supply, this is how Obama thinks you should try to alleviate your pain at the pump,” the note read.

i love that :-)

yesterday a guy called in to Rush and said, "Um, tune ups are a thing of the past - computers tune up cars at the factory and we just dont do tune ups on cars any longer. well, maybe on cars that were made before 86..."

the fact that Obama keeps saying it everywhere just makes it hilarious.. who tells him this stuff? Hillary?  :lmao:

I kid you not, there are actually people defending this nonsense, and sadly they're not all liberal Obamessiah worshipers.

Just a thought here. Older cars would probably not run right if not kept tuned up. They would chug-chug along and annoy the driver so badly that they would eventually buy a set of spark plugs. As for newer cars, I think they only get tune-ups at the 100,000 mile mark. I might be wrong.

Anyway, I went back and re-ran my numbers in the process of looking over that missive, and found something fascinating. Under my exceptionally generous assessment that full national tire inflation compliance would save each currently underinflated commuter an extra three miles per gallon, and thus 6.6 million gallons of gasoline per day, Americans would have to have 100 percent tire efficiency for every day for 664 years in order to save the equivalent of the 1.6 trillion gallons of gasoline in the Outer Continental Shelf. (This isn't even including ANWR.

My experience has been mostly with motorcycle engines, but I had a bike with modern hydraulic tappets (a 1984 Honda) that did not require adjusting.  My current bike, an older model (1981), requires a valve adjustment/check every 3,000 miles on top of the standard fluid/filter change.  I know, specifically, that a 1959 Chevrolet V8 requires a valve adjustment every 3,000 miles.  I'm going to go out on a limb here, but unless your car is more than 25 years old, you probably don't need a "tune up".
