Title: I Work in an Interesting neighborhood.
Post by: SVPete on October 13, 2016, 11:05:27 AM
I don't know if this will pique anyone's interest, but this is the Lounge ...

I work in an interesting neighborhood. I recently changed jobs, and my building has a shower. Partly for the exercise and partly to avoid traffic, I come in early, walk 2 or 3 miles around the neighborhood and then shower. A couple of weeks ago I noticed a woman tossing something on the sidewalk in front of a building. When I came up I saw it was par-boiled rice (it looked like Uncle Ben's rather than Minute Rice). I'd noticed quite a few pigeons roosting in the area, and figured it was an attempt to kill a few pigeons (supposedly rice can swell in their digestive tract and kill them). I've seen the rice re-scattered every week. I've seen pigeons eating the rice occasionally, but I've not seen any carcasses. Yesterday I notice that a corner of the nearby building had wire spikes along the roof edge, and 7 papier mache owls at intervals as well. yesterday the pigeons were roosting on a street light arm across the street; today some were on the edge of that building, but not among the spikes or owls.

Much as I sympathize, I don't think the anti-pigeon measures are working.

Time for stronger measures!

Yes, rice kills birds.  This is why there are no birds in China.

If you can't tell, I regard the whole bird-popping thing as an urban legend.  When I first started hearing about it, I would challenge people to provide news reports of burst birds.  No one has ever been able to do that.

The pigeons are likely thriving because of the readily available food source.
