Neat pictures. I've lived here for over 20 years and I've manged to avoid Gatlinburg. I have no idea why.
That Dolly sculpture is a little creepy, tho.
-
My parents love to spend weekends in Gatlinburg when they can get away from the store they own.
I'd say the ski lift photo is my favorite. That's a fantastic view! :)

Opryland had a ski lift/air trolley that carried you from one end of the park to the other. It was neat.

Good stuff! I was in the mood for some interesting pics. Got more?
I've driven across Tennessee a few times. I've stayed in Memphis, Nashville, and Knoxville. I've never been fortunate enough to have the time to get too far from the interstate. It's really a beautiful state. I say it's like a Nestle's Crunch bar. Flat on one side and bumpy on the other.

Those mountains suck up rain like a sponge. It seems like I always get stuck in the rain driving over them. Got stuck in a horrendous downpour on I-40 on my way to North Carolina the other year. Couldn't. See. Shit.

I was just over in Dandridge yesterday, on the other side of Gatlinburg on Douglas Lake, looking at a friend's property. It was sunny there, but storming really bad in Knoxville ( I live in the southwest part of town).
When we went past the Sevierville/Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg exit....it looked like they were getting hammered by rain. Been a frequent occurance this summer. Maybe it will cut down on the forest fires this fall.
-
I went to Gatlinburg when I was a sophomore in high school for our orchestra trip. It was a lot of fun. I did that ski lift thing too. :)

Beautiful pics. Now I have "Tennessee Homesick Blues" by Dolly playing in my head. :-)
That Dolly sand scuplture is weird!

I go to Gatlinburg every chance I get. Here's a pic I took nearby, along the Roaring Fork River:

Gatlinburg TN....bad....bad.....bad....memories of that place.......LOL :-)
Honeymooned there in 1967.
Current wife once said she'd like for me to take her to Gatlinburg for a few days. I offered to send her and as many friends as she wanted to take but told her, "I ain't going". Of course she wanted to know why and after beating around the bush awhile I told her. She's never mentioned wanting to go again.

I love that area! And I recognize the Mini golf course, too. That one of the things I miss about when I lived in TN.

My divorce should be final this month and I'm moving to Greeneville. I'm from Jonesborough. Been planning this for 2 years. I should be all settled before it snows here in Michigan. :hyper:

You have a chance to go make a good memory to replace the bad. Your ex should not be granted the power to control where you go and what you enjoy. Take your bride and have a ball.

The Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area is second in the country for destination weddings...Las Vegas is first.
Who knew?
It is pretty here though. Depending on traffic, I can be at the interstate exit in about 45 minutes....then it can take 15 minutes to over an hour to get to Pigeon Forge and longer to get over to Gatlinburg. I don't go on weekends, and try not to go at all in the fall....way too many people. From around the first of November, the whole area has "Winterfest" and there are Christmas lights everywhere. It's fun to see them.
Wish I'd bought property along the highway when I moved here 25 years ago, and you could buy it for $500 an acre! :banghead:

My wife took the kids to Pigeon Forge this last spring while I sat at home and watched work crews remodel the place for a week.
They loved it!

I have more! These are from my family reunion I went to while I was in Kentucky....

The really really old root cellar on the farm we go to. It still has canned veggies (I think) in it from the 1940s and 50s.

That Dolly sand scuplture is weird!
We could break into a chorus of "Rocky Top" if it would help...
:)

And clog too!
Good ole Rocky Top....Rocky Top Ten-nes-seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.... :-)
-
I love that area! And I recognize the Mini golf course, too. That one of the things I miss about when I lived in TN.
It's called "Hillbilly Golf". We go there nearly every time we visit.

Let's not. I attended a UT basketball game last fall. Took 2 weeks to get all 500 repeats of it outta my head. :banghead:

That's it.
Two hour drive from were I live to Gatlinburg. Last time I took the family I think we went over during Christmas time to see all the lights. Both Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are geting too crowded, though I wish I had bought a bunch of property there back in the 80's (or sooner).

My Mancub came home from that trip from down there with a fierce addiction to Mini Golf!!
I heard about little other than Hillbilly Golf from him after he got home. :-)

BWAHAHA!!!!!!! I totally forgot about this one. I was looking for Dolly's "Tennessee Homesick Blues" and found this. Put your drink down before clicking.

found the lyrics -
New York City ain't no kind of place
For a country girl with a friendly face
If you smile people look at you funny
They take it wrong
The greenest state in the land of the free
And the home of the Grand Ole Opry
Is calling me back to my Smoky Mountain home
I wish I had my old fishin' pole
And was sitting on the banks of the fishing hole
Eating green apples and waiting for the fish to bite
Life ain't as simple as it used to be
Since the big apple took a bite out of me
And Lord, I'm so Tennessee homesick that i could die
Chorus:
But I ain't been home in I don't know when
If I had it all to do over again
Tonight I'd sleep in my old feather bed
What I wouldn't give for a little bitty taste
Of Mama's homemade chocolate cake
Tennessee homesick blues running through my head
Mama you can fluff my feather bed
Just as soon as I can I'm gonna head
Back to the Tennessee hills and it better be soon
Daddy you can load the rifles up
We're gonna load them dogs on the pickup truck
And take off to Calhoun Country and catch us a coon
Repeat Chorus
Eatin' grits and gravy and country ham
Go to church on Sunday with dinner on the grounds
Tennessee homesick blues are runnin' through my head
Repeat Chorus
Good Lord have mercy on a country girl
Tryin' to make a living in a rhinestone world
It's hard to be a diamond in a rhinestone world
With Tennessee homesick blues runnin' through my head
I've got those Tennessee homesick blues runnin' through my head
Tennessee homesick blues

'Rhinestone' was an under-appreciated movie. :-)

I think we saw it in the theater more than once.

I concur with Schade. Great pics. How did your brother behave?
-
Tennesee and Kentucky. I got to see alot of them both when I was stationed at Ft. Campbell, Ky. Our unit once spent two weeks near the Great Smokey mountains and it was not to bad there for the most part.

He did pretty good. I only got into one fight with him because in the middle of that huge ginormous storm he kept asking (like 20 times) what road we were on. You couldn't even see 2 feet out from the car. How the hell can you read road signs!??!?! He also pretty much told my kids Santa is fake at dinner one night. Since they are 9 & 10 I let that one go. I mean how long can a kid believe in Santa anyway? :-)

The sand sculpture is really cool.
Dollywood was closed when I was there a few years ago, but I did ride the ski lift and buy some fresh taffy. There was a girl involved, I took a LOA from work and flew down to see her. Six months later, her younger sister ended up moving in with me. I was such a slut back then. :-)
