Aleksander Solzhenitsyn dies at 89.
Source: BBC News
Russian writer Alexander Solzhenitsyn, who exposed Stalin's prison system in his novels and spent 20 years in exile, has died at 89, Russian media say.
The author of One Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovich and the Gulag Archipelago, who returned to Russia in 1994, reportedly died of a stroke.
The Nobel laureate had suffered from high blood pressure in recent years.
After returning to Russia, Solzhenitsyn wrote several polemics on Russian history and identity.

Everyone's got that one book they make all their friends read, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich is mine.
Godspeed to a fine author.
Okay, my question being this: how can one possibly have read Solzhenitsyn, and been influenced by his most remarkable writings.....and still remain a primitive?
I don't get it.
Anyway, this bonfire on Skins's island is adulatory.
But I'll bet dollars to dimes there's going to be a bonfire full of Hate within 24 hours.
Anybody want to take me up on it?

Not I. The primitives' adulation doesn't reconcile with their usual admiration for the human garbage Solzhenitsyn despised.

I don't know about a whole thread full of hate, but there's at least one post right now:

11. Solzhenitsyn was an anti-semitic reactionary!
"Then came the news that Solzhenitsyn was writing a major history of the Jews in Russia. The first volume of Dvesti let vmeste (Two Hundred Years Together), covering the period from 1795 to 1916, appeared in 2001; the second volume followed in 2003. According to Solzhenitsyn, the work was intended to give an objective and balanced account of Russian-Jewish relations: "I appeal to both sides -- the Russians and the Jews -- for patient mutual understanding and admission of their own share of sin." This comment seems suspicious in itself, given that, for most of their history in Russia, Jews were victims of systematic oppression and violence. To talk about mutual guilt is a bit like asking blacks to accept their share of blame for Jim Crow.
What does Solzhenitsyn see as the Jews' share of sin? Mainly, their participation in revolutionary activities in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and then in the Soviet government. He rejects claims that communism in Russia was the result of a Jewish plot but asserts that Jews played a "disproportionate role" in the creation of a terrorist state "insensitive to the Russian people and disconnected from Russian history."

Ah, yes, that very complicated anti-Semitism of eastern Europe.
Sentiments which I encountered many times up close and first hand, and sentiments with which I vehemently disagree, but really, it's very complicated.
And as for Jews in socialist movements and governments, one has to remember that these people were only of Jewish derivation, no more than that. They weren't in such movements and governments because they were Jews; they were in such movements and governments, because as with any other group of humanity, they were narrow-minded assholes and bigots.
Their Judaism had nothing to do with it; in fact, practically all of them had rejected the Faith of their Fathers.

I got into quite a discussion once on CC with someone (I forget who) about Jews being a race and not just a religion. You reminded me of that episode.

Dems would erase Israel from the map in a heartbeat thinking it would buy them good will from islamists who wish them dead.
It is the epitome of stupidity to throw away the best defense the world has against those that seek to conquer it.

They get into this "The USSR wasn't so bad, it's just the wrong people were in control and messed up what is otherwise a preferred society of equals" nonsense. Best I can tell is they do it as a cover. Somehow they're able to detatch themselves from the roles played by the very type of people they would have supported had they been Soviets by mistakenly believing they would have been like Solzhenitsyn. It's just like Limbaugh and others who daily point out the flaws of liberalism, and how the primitives want them jailed or removed. The primitives would have done the same to Solzhenitsyn given the time, place, and opportunity because that's what he did, point out the flaws of Marxism.

Me either. His writings were a cutting indictment of the monolithic State's power to regulate the lives of the citizenry.

Yeah, but they think a genius like Hussien Obama can run a socialist country that will work.
Hey, Hussien Obama is black. Did you know that?
Some are saying that he is only half black but I don't see it....... :-)
